This is going to be interesting:

The BMW-Sauber team will run their radical vertical wings this weekend at the French Grand Prix F1Racing.net can reveal. The wings were introduced last week on Wednesday when Robert Kubica and Jacques Villeneuve were testing the new wings.

A BMW-Sauber spokesperson confirmed to F1Racing.net: "Yes, we will run the vertical wings at Magny-Cours this weekend."
When Robert Kubica was testing the new wings at Jerez he wasn't sure what to expect from the new wings. He told F1Racing.net: "Sometimes you just have to try something. I'm not sure what it is for exactly. I just sat in the car and took it for a lap.
Kubica wasn't really impressed by the wings, but then again, he only drove it for one lap on Wednesday. He commented: "If I experienced any different behaviour in the car? No, and I don't expect we'll be using it at races either."

So they won't be using them at the race? Just for practice?

Grasping at straws?
| wvallwheeldrive | 07-11-2006 11:01 AM |
that is horrid
| f1vlad | 07-11-2006 11:09 AM |
No seems like they will run it during the race, too.

Don't forget the McLaren-esque horns.

those look like they would help a LITTLE in high speed cornering, but more importantly, it seems like they just impede drivers vision!
Interesting to see how they run...

Can anyone explain the purpose of these things? Does it try and streamline flow above the car to make the wing more efficient at low speeds?
| k00ky | 07-11-2006 11:30 AM |
Might be to "clean up" airflow forward of the drivers helmet??

This is the quote that threw me off.

Yeah that is a little confusing because today official BMW said they will run them in the race.

What can you expect if even Robert doesn't know what they are for:

Those whacky Europeans... What will they think of next?
So, it's hard to tell by the pic exactly how the wings are shaped and orineted. Are they mere air deflectors, or do they actually have a wing-shape cross section to them, offering a pulling or squeazing effect? I do think they'd impede the driver's view all that much.

Sorry... After thought.
So... The aero package is why the cars aren't competitive?

Aero package has a lot to do it it, yes.

I know... Sorry.. I make joke, as in it isn't a problem with the engines or drivers. Anyhoo, I hope it helps them. BMW/Sauber should also consider adding a lightning bolt patch on the left shoulder of the suits/uniforms.

These horns are probably an interpretation of cupped winglets Renault, for one, are using above the upper front wishbones...I recall Matchett commenting about the apparent "usefulness" of these elements (according to Renault engineers) in stabilizing side sheer winds and for draft turbulence, especially in high speed corners...
Me, I think they are a hideous, goofy and probably dangerous...

Wow, someone else finally adopted these, that took long enough.

I'll bet a Franc that the FIA bands the wings, much like they did to Orange or Minardi a couple years back at Monaco.

Looks like inverted keels, so maybe they add straight line stability? Ugly as sin!

I think if I were driving that car, my first thought would be -
"Get that *$%@#@ piece of crap out of my line of sight"

I seriously doubt top paid F1 engineers would place aero parts directly in the viewing area of the driver. I'm sure it looks worse than it is. And I hope it works! BMW need some top 5 finishes... Heck, even some top 10 will be a start. :(

So basicly it looks they really are trying to use these devices to essentially control Yaw like in a plane

agreed....I was also thinking these might be to combat the vortices created by the helmet

Straight line stability, And turn in quicker. Thats why its over the front steering area.
