Questions from last night's WRC Monte rallye broadcast

Ok so i have a couple of newbie questions:

When Burn's car had engine failure, in the footage it showed him at night in what seemed to be a public highway type road with several lanes and cars around.. what gives?

Several times they spoke of Delecour as being Sainz's and McRaes team mate with ford, but why was Delecour's car not painted in the same Ford Martini scheme?

Thats all [img]http://www.i-club.com/ubb-files/smilies/smile.gif[/img]
NotAnRS 04-10-2001 03:55 AM

The drivers have to drive on public roads between the special stages, to get from one to the other. These are at regulated speeds, but are still considered part of the rally.

Not sure on Delecour's paint scheme, perhaps Ford is trying to promote the new RS version of the Focus?
Adrian128 04-10-2001 03:59 AM

That footage was probably when they were in the transport stage. They are supposed to drive the cars in public roads.. obeying the road rules etc, when they go from stage to stage. I remember an incident a few years ago when Tommi tried to drive his Lancer with 3 wheels but was stopped by the local police cause his car was deemed unroadworthy.

About Delecour.. maybe the car had different sponsors.. doesn't that happen in a lot in Nascar and stuff? Drivers belonging in the same team but having different sponsors. In this case Delecour is still a factory Ford driver, but the Focus he was driving had different sponsors.. [img]http://www.i-club.com/ubb-files/smilies/smile.gif[/img]

STiShawn 04-10-2001 06:28 AM

I Beleive Delacour's car is painted that way to promote the RS, as mentioned above. His car and McRae's are both factory cars, just painted differently.
Prog 04-10-2001 06:37 AM

wow!! how cool would that be!! to be going your merry way on the highway and see burns in his WRC impreza on the road...

a little stoplight challenge perhaps?! [img]http://www.i-club.com/ubb-files/smilies/lol.gif[/img]
crbf1 04-10-2001 06:43 AM

Yup, those are the transit stages. Can't be racin' all over the open road now, can we. There's all kinds of rules governing the way you have to drive. Can't use the driving lights, speed limits, turn signals, etc. Kind of sucked that the roads were blocked by the spectators though. Also, can't believe people stand on the OUTSIDE of corners. Haven't these people heard of physics?
NeedaScooby 04-10-2001 06:53 AM

I belive Ford is doing what the Mitsubishi team did in 97 which was paint the car a defferent schem for promotional purposes.
They badged richard burns lancer as a charisma--
Prog 04-10-2001 07:00 AM

Wait that was another question!! why is freddy loix's EVO called Carisma GT?!

and why do they NEVER interview freddy loix?! i mean they mention him alongside makkinen and how shots of him, but ive NEVER seen the man being interviewd.. and i have 2 tapes of ALL of season 2000 worth of converage and i dont recall EVER seeing loix!!!!
Adrian128 04-10-2001 07:16 AM

I think the Carisma is the name for the Lancer in some parts of Europe. [img]http://www.i-club.com/ubb-files/smilies/smile.gif[/img] I could be wrong though. [img]http://www.i-club.com/ubb-files/smilies/smile.gif[/img]

jlyttle 04-10-2001 07:27 AM

Maybe he can't speak English? Just a guess. Those people that stand on the outside of corners have not seen the video clips that we have! Heheh. Seriously though, it must take restraint from as competitive a driver as Mcrae not to run those stupid bastards over.

BTW, that was just about as pissed as I can remember seeing him when the Focus finally gave up. I would not want to have to do THAT interview. "So Mr. Mcrae, how do you feel about competing for 2 and a half days and leading, only to have the car die and all that hard work was for nothing?" [img]http://www.i-club.com/ubb-files/smilies/lol.gif[/img] DUCK!

OMG! Is that a person or a building behind Juha's car? [img]http://www.i-club.com/ubb-files/smilies/eek.gif[/img]

Yeah!!!! When they asked him how far into the rally had it happened he was like " well blah blah it was like 10 15kilometers but that doesnt really matter now does it?!" all pissed off!!!!!

That is very frustrating im sure...

Jamie: you seem to love making me hate you [img]http://www.i-club.com/ubb-files/smilies/tongue.gif[/img]
jlyttle 04-10-2001 07:45 AM

The scariest people are the ones that can show how pissed they are while never raising their voices. i don't think his expression even changed!
TSDScooby 04-10-2001 07:54 AM

yeah no kidding. Poor McRae. it was funny watching him kicking his car, though :-)
as far as the paint scheme, promotional purposes probably. Also, the 'normal' paint scheme was with the cars that Ford entered to score "manufacturer points". Not all cars are eligable for those points.

I can't wait for the faster rallies. I love watching flying cars! :-)

All I have to say is that is what the great Scotsman gets for drivin a Ford (I'm a Ford hater). I think he's feelin that too. Time to get a reliable car.

I had to laugh when McRae kicked the hood of the car.... he raged on that car! His Co-Driver was just tryin to be quite and not talk to Colin... like Colin would attack him if he said anything... that was great drama!
Prog 04-10-2001 08:22 AM

well if he needs a reliable car its not going to be the Subaru [img]http://www.i-club.com/ubb-files/smilies/wink.gif[/img] Theyre having a lot of (teething?) problems... most of burn's woes have been from reliability problems with the Subaru, from last year and even in the Monte carlo 2001, his engine died in a tranport stage (what i mentioned in the original question)
Ippon 04-10-2001 08:38 AM

You are Correct Sir! Subaru has definately been unreliable as of late! What is the deal with that anyway? Has Subaru fallen off the deep end in Rally racing? [img]http://www.i-club.com/ubb-files/smilies/confused.gif[/img]

Maybe Colin needs a Lancer.... or Skoda... or anything!! By the way.. where did all the Corolla's go? Do they still make them in Europe?

jlyttle 04-10-2001 08:46 AM

It was a great rally, though. Lot's of drama and lead changes. It was close until the failures. This just proves that among the best drivers, barring equipment failure, the one who make the fewest mistakes wins. Makkinen did not win because he was always the fastest, often he was not. He won because he was consistantly good and made no mistakes. Luckily his car held up, that helps. [img]http://www.i-club.com/ubb-files/smilies/wink.gif[/img]
Wintrode 04-10-2001 09:07 AM

Was anyone else extremely impressed with the drive that Arman Schwarz put in in the Skoda?

He was thrashing the hell out of that car, very good stuff [img]http://www.i-club.com/ubb-files/smilies/biggrin.gif[/img]
Big C 04-10-2001 09:08 AM

Prog:
Freddy has been interviewed many times and speaks great english. Motorsports Mundial even did a 10 minute interview/drive with him when he joined Mitsu. Problem is that he is lackluster and hasn't met the expectations set for him. He drove really well for Toyota though so I know that he has some potential. He is always fighting for 6th place and always crashes right when he needs to step up. I've seen some pretty scary incar of him rolling down the road....

Does anyone else think that Speedvision ruled last night??!! SCCA Pro Rally, 1 hour WRC, Import drags with Papadakis running 174 mph, and the viewer videos....Most TV I've watched in months. If it was like that all the time I would never get my car done!

Adrian128 04-10-2001 09:29 AM

as far as I know. Toyota Team Europe pulled out of the WRC because Toyota of Japan wanted to put all their money into developing their F1 car. That spelled the death of the Toyota Corolla WRC, as an official Toyota factory entry. There are a few remaining Corollas competing, run by privateers. There is at least one Corolla WRC, running in the Australian Rally Championship. [img]http://www.i-club.com/ubb-files/smilies/smile.gif[/img]
Ippon 04-10-2001 09:46 AM

Wow... that sucks! I liked the Corolla. You know, I think it would be interesting to see Honda put out a 4WD Accord or Civic and rally that, that would be cool. Of couse I'd like to see any car rally, I think that's what all cars desire to be... rally racers!! [img]http://www.i-club.com/ubb-files/smilies/biggrin.gif[/img]

By the way, does the Tiburon still rally? I know I saw the Accent last night... or is that a different Rally series that it's in?
kelley nelson 04-10-2001 09:51 AM

I like the format of this year's WRC coverage. The extra 30 minutes really leaves them more time to explain how the rally is playing out. A lot more eye candy too [img]http://www.i-club.com/ubb-files/smilies/smile.gif[/img]

I still don't know if it as entertaining as the '98 coverage though. [Great San Remo coverage, also Rally Australia and Rally Great Britain (Sainz retires just 300 meters from the end of the last stage)]

How about Petter Solberg's rollover?! Ouch! The cars bottoming out and sparking was great too. Felt terrible for Colin.
jaybird 04-10-2001 09:53 AM

It was funny to see McRae flp out like that, kicking the car andthrowing his gloves and everthying! That sucked for him. Allmost the same thing that happend last year leads most of the race and then the car craps out. Wasn't he ready to leave Ford?

SG rules!

Wintrode, It was funny cause his co-pilot actually seemed scared he was going so fast through that village. Crazy German!

Big C, Speedvision was great last night. The extra 30 minutes really makes a difference. Their photography is great, the music is great, the commentating is great, the new intro is great... My wife fell a sleep on the couch at 9:15. But she kept waking up because I kept turning the volume up.

Hello,

From the footage that they showed, you would have never guessed that hey was really working either. Smoooooth. His front wheels wern't twitching around back and forth a whole lot as he was drifting all around the whole road. There were probably others, but they kept showing him doing those loooong drifts around the hairpins. Yummy.

[img]http://www.i-club.com/ubb-files/smilies/tongue.gif[/img] After watching those darn programes I wish that it was snowing outside.

jaybird,

When Sainz and Moya retired in the last stage of the Rally of GB in '98 Moya actually threw his helmet through the back window of the Corolla ;p
trev555 04-10-2001 10:51 AM

I had Tommi Makinen pass me on a narrow twisty road between stages at last year's Rally Australia. Scared the life out of me when i saw the words "TOMMI" big in my mirrors. ...Now that's something you won't get at any Grand prix. [img]http://www.i-club.com/ubb-files/smilies/wink.gif[/img]
Buck-O 04-10-2001 04:51 PM

Wow, im a bit behind on this thread...

The coverage RULED!!

The nice thing about it this year is that Speedvision is an OFFICIAL Boradcaster of FIA WRC events. Rather then as a rebroadcaster last year, which limited them to only a half hour, and caused them to do their own video cut scenes etc. Much much better this year.

Delecours car, is a promotional car for the Focus RS, but thats already ben discussed.

Seconed somones elses statements, the Corolla WRC was killed when TTE (Toyota Team Europe) was switched over to the F1 program. Even though they dont officiall run a works car. They still slell the Corolla WRC to privatier teams, and supply parts for the car, and support where needed technically. The cars are still doing well in the hands of privatiers in the WRC, as well as taking some overall wins in other forms of rally around the world.

Hyundai used to have a VERY strong program with their F2 kit-car Tiburons. Almost beat out Renault and their Maxi Megane. The cars are still run alot in the BRC, and in other rally series that still allow for unrestricted kit-cars. But now they exclusivly run the Accent WR Car, in the WRC.

Trev... [img]http://www.i-club.com/ubb-files/smilies/eek.gif[/img] WOW!! you acutally got that close?? BASTARD!!![img]http://www.i-club.com/ubb-files/smilies/biggrin.gif[/img] j/k I envy you man. Guess i'll have to move then[img]http://www.i-club.com/ubb-files/smilies/biggrin.gif[/img].
As for Tommi's driving ability... can someone actually check to make sure that he's a real person and not some kind of android?[img]http://www.i-club.com/ubb-files/smilies/wink.gif[/img] Did you see his face when he came up on McRae?? NO emotion what so ever.... <burrrrr> chilling... as for McRae.. poor guy. I wasw laughing my butt off but I felt really bad for him... I believe he would have won had the Focus not given out. And talk about drama!!! You guys are right!!! I've never seen him so mad![img]http://www.i-club.com/ubb-files/smilies/eek.gif[/img] Nicky just sad and was totally silent when he realized that they were screwed.
Schwartz on the other hand[img]http://www.i-club.com/ubb-files/smilies/lol.gif[/img] UNF***INGBELIEVABLE!! I like when the narrator mentioned that his codriver was so scared from the speed that he didn't even look up!!(Met that guy BTW in TN-Jeremy Hart very nice fellow)
I like the new format and intros as well. looks to be a great season!!
I think we can all thank David Richards very hartily for this one.

IPPON, the Hyundai Tiburons are run in the SCCA Pro Rally Championship here in the US. Still running, pretty strong too. Only thing is , they're basically Mitsu's w/Hyundai bodies. Sure is fun to watch/hear/run-like-hell from, too!
