555 is back!

I copied this straight off www.swrt.com Basically 555 is back as a sponser of Subaru's WRC team

General News
16 January 2002

Summary
The 555 Subaru World Rally Team announced today that it has renewed its partnership with British American Tobacco, and its internationally popular cigarette brand 555, for at least the next 3 years.
This latest development is part of the close relationship between Subaru and British American Tobacco that stretches back almost nine years to when the first 555 Subaru Legacy appeared on the 1993 Sweden rally, driven by a young Colin McRae.

Thanks to the versatile performance of Subaru's rally cars, a driver line up that has included six world champions, and levels of presentation and styling that were previously unheard of in rallying, the team has not been out of the spotlight since.

Commenting on the deal, 555 Subaru World Rally Team Principal, David Lapworth, said: "As a team it is great news that British American Tobacco have seen such benefits from their involvement with Subaru and are going to continue to support us into the future. Many people forget that in the early years of the Subaru World Rally Team our cars were predominately white with a number of different coloured logos. However, when British American Tobacco became a team partner in 1993 it was time for an image change, and an opportunity for us to take a fresh approach to the whole concept of what a rally car should look like. The result was the first evolution of the now familiar blue and yellow design, and I think it is fair to say it has become one of the most recognisable images in motorsport worldwide. It also marked the beginning of one of the most successful teams in the modern era of rallying."

Marketing Director of British American Tobacco Jimmi Rembiszewski, said: "As a team I think we have always been unbeatable, and we are delighted to be able to build upon our long standing relationship with Subaru for the coming three years. With the recent launch of the 555 brand in the UK, 2002 will be an important year for us both on and off the rally stages. But with the popularity of the WRC series rocketing and the championship winning pedigree of the 555 Subaru World Rally Team, the prospects are good for continued success for us both."

The 555 Subaru World Rally Team has established itself as the fans' favourite but the alliance is above all a winning combination with a firm foundation of results. The team secured FIA World Championship titles in 1995 for both drivers and manufacturers, and held onto the manufacturers' trophy for 1996 and 1997. In the FIA Asia Pacific Championship it was victorious in 1993, 1994 and 1997. In total, the team has won every round of the World Rally Championship at least once and has an impressive tally of 33 world rally victories.

Subaru's success story in rallying continued in 2001 when Richard Burns took the Impreza to victory in the drivers championship and for 2002 great things are expected of the new and dynamic driver line-up.

Poised to make his team competitive debut in Monte Carlo is acclaimed four-time World Champion driver Tommi Makinen. The 37-year-old Finn brings a wealth of knowledge to the team and his standing as the most successful rally driver of the last decade, combined with his confidence in the performance and handling of the Subaru Impreza WRC during testing, will hold him in good stead.

Tommi's unrivalled experience will be complemented for 2002 by the raw talent of Norway's Petter Solberg. A fine example of the 555 Subaru World Rally Team's philosophy of developing the careers of talented young drivers, the popular 27-year-old showed extremely promising form on his debut season in the Impreza last year and he was able to achieve the best results of his career. Now, with the benefit of more event experience and hours behind the wheel of the 555 Subaru Impreza WRC, Petter is in a stronger position to demonstrate his considerable talents.

It's not news, but it's the first pix we've seen of the new livery.

I don't like it but BAT's paying for it and their money will help build a stronger team (please let's not get started on the tobacco money argument here, okay?). At least they kept the sharp Pleiades/"bear paw" logo on the decklid. The WR Blue looks lighter too but it could just be the pix.

bliu 01-16-2002 01:01 PM

lookin' good! anybody else having trouble viewing the full-sized images at swrt.com? it's taking forever for them to load!

was looking at '06.jpg' - is it just me or does the front bumper seem (behind the headlight) look horrible? and what is 'sammy'? new sponsor of some sort, i take it ... anybody know what product they produce?

on '05.jpg', the rear bumper seam looks bad, too! is this some sorta show car only? or do they not have as good build quality, figuring they'll get all dinged up anyway?:p

I don't want to get off on a rant here, but...

Ok, there was the earlier "tobacco money evil" thing going on, and I don't smoke, I think smoking is nasty, and wouldn't want smoke blown into my face. But, here is the thing, people hate the tobacco companies for marketing products to people which will kill them right?

What about Denny's?

I don't think anyone would freak about them sponsoring a car, but I happened to peruse their website to get a number and discovered they had nutritional information available. Boy, talk about an eye-opener. The meat-lover breakfast slam is 93 GRAMS OF FAT!!!

They are marketing stuff that would kill as certainly as tobacco, maybe more so.

Boy you chow 3 packs of meat lovin bfast a day and it'll take more than 5 years off of your life. I know there are differences and all, but there are so many companies out there producing products every bit as harmful as tobacco that no one really cares about.

Sorry for the rant, but the puddle looked too smooth.

cheers,
scotto

So is this the new World Rally Blue?
Shik 01-16-2002 06:46 PM

That looks so "meant to be" it's not funny! Absolutely perfect!!!

I'm almost more excited about BAT re-joining with Subaru then I was when RB won the title. Simply fantastic news( yes, a bit old, but nice to see it on SWRT's site as official news).

Go Subaru!

You can burn fat. You cant burn that tobacco tar out of your lungs though...

And ya, the meat lovers skillet is one of my favorite meals at dennys!
And no, im not going to be dying anytime soon, since I'm not even remotely overweight!
scooby5 01-17-2002 10:15 AM

It's obvious who's in charge

555 is British American Tobaco

which sponsors

Subaru World Rally Team

which cars are made by

Prodrive

Which is owned by

David Richards

Who owns WRC TV and now runs...

British American Racing F1 Team

which is heavily sponsored by and whose salary is paid by

British American Tobacco

I wonder how long before we can start smoking our Prodrive Light cigarettes!
Weasel 555 01-17-2002 10:19 AM

now just waiting to see the "stylised 555" swooshes ....
when they can't advertise the 555 in certain world rallies ;)
i'm sure it'll be similar to the '99 version .....

so anyone got the logo's already ???
Lifino 01-17-2002 10:45 AM

Man, just think what Prodrive will do with cigarettes. Improved burning efficiency. They'll be making huge differences in burn times, probably for the first year or two each new advance will result in as much as 10 seconds, but they will still play with it, even if the result is just a few tenths of a second...

Probably make them more durable, perhaps water proof. Though it'll be strange smoking a blue cigarette! They will have to come up with a special paper for the butt that makes it easier to grip between the first nuckles of your first and second digit...

I wonder if this means that Tommi will have to smoke on stage? Will they put an ashtray up next to the sequential shifter? I can just see Tommi giving his now familiar lazy stare into the camera, no emotion, as he takes a nice long hit, his lips part, a breeze of smoke escapes and is drawn through his nose. A moment later as he exhales rings move toward the camera...
scooby5 01-17-2002 10:56 AM

Lifino,

That's hilarious. I was imagining a slow motion replay of Makinen in the WRC turning a corner, winding the window down and flipping the cigarette butt out the window.

Weasel 555 01-17-2002 11:04 AM

ROFLMAO !!!!

Lifino,

thats funny LMAO !!!

although did'nt u see him doing that when he drove the "Malboro Mitsubishi"

hehehehehehehe
TimStevens 01-17-2002 11:40 AM

Tommi in a few years:

"Yeah I was coming around the hairpin when my hand started shaking. Not so good, yes? So co-driver lights me a Prodrive 100 and I puff puff puff and things settle down ok. After that, things were... not too bad."

:D

Lifino 01-17-2002 11:57 AM

Reports of a horrible accident on stage, the Subie rolls five times, down a cliff, into a stream, fans pull Tommi and co-driver out...

Driver report, "I went to do the Prodrive/BAT Flik(tm) and as I fliked the cigarette out the window it blew back into the car. We both were trying to find it, I don't know what happend. I should not take my eyes off the road like that, I know this, but I didn't want any burn stains. My appologies to Subaru."
Weasel 555 01-17-2002 01:30 PM

DNF ??

ran out of matches stage 2...proceeded to stage 3 on lighter ...
ran out of lighter fluid...stage 4 .....gave up as could'nt light more cigs while drivin at 110% for concentration purposes !!!!

I personally wanted to see them back with the more abstract "555" logo...but oh well, i'll take what i can get:).
Weasel 555 01-17-2002 04:53 PM

wigglesxjr,
that logo of the "stylised 555 swooshes" will more than likely show up ..when they are rallying in countries that don't allow cigarette advertising :D

thats the one i like ....a little more than the "555" itself ;)

I like the "swooshed" 5s myself. There was also an article on speedvision.com about it too:http://www.speedvision.com/pub/articles/racing/rally_off_road/020116a.html
