Why Subaru makes fender's shape different between sedan and wagon?

Why wagon's fenders are flat? Is there any specific reason for that?
I think sedan's muscle fender is much much better than my wagon's flat fender! Wagon's flat fender makes wagon narrower-looking than sedan. I hate that...
Honestly I didn't recognized it even after I got my wagon. I might bought sedan if I knew it earlier.
Actually that is the only one I hate about my wagon.
I prefer my wagon style though, except fenders........
Anyway, why?

And if you can figure out why they did THAT, I'll e-mail you a big chocolate chip cookie :)
Seriously, I thought volume manufacturing was about utilizing economies of scale, but NOOOO Subaru has to have wagons just a smidge narrower than sedans...bah

i think the idea was that the wagon could be marketed to a more modest crowd, less aggressive looking. i love the flares, but a lot of soccer moms might think it's a little too punk for them

Same.
They probably made a narrower track on the wagon so there is less chance of rollover with the additional top heavy weight.

I'm no mechanical engineer or anything, but if they wanted it more stable, they would have made it wider, yes?

yea, seriously. also, it's only the front with the narrower track. the rears are the same.
| samowrx | 03-17-2005 02:31 PM |
are you sure the rear track is the same? I thought the wagon's rear track was smaller also.
| djplayboy | 03-17-2005 03:17 PM |
i just said screw it and ordered the sedan fenders last week

if it were different, a sedan rear swaybar would not be interchangable. since i'm running a sedan bar on my wagon, i'm gonna go with them being equal.

The width on the sedan is 68.5 in wide and the wagon is 66.7. The rear is the same. The wagon also weighs 3165 mt compared to the sedan 3085 the AT sedan is 3140 and the wagon is 3220lbs just for some info :D

haha! i don't really want to talk about my flair...
the wagon is heavier in the rear. narrowing the track in the front may have been an attempt to balance out the instabilities caused by increased polar momentum in the rear. narrowing the front track decreases oversteer/increases understeer. take a look at eighties and nineties porsche 911's, the rear track is significantly wider than the front. this was done to tame the gross oversteer problem caused by a heavy rear end.

The wagon uses up all the left over GC8 front end parts lying around
| rukkie | 03-18-2005 01:34 AM |
I think they wanted the wagon to be also appealing to the people who aren't after the WRX's performance but rather see it as an higher end model Impreza. i.e. a more mature audience.
| JalopySiR | 03-18-2005 04:11 PM |
In other countries the lower end sedans have the unflared fenders also. So they would use the narrow track equipment that the U.S. wagon uses. So Subaru isn't making specific U.S. "wagon-only" sus. crap.
Also, I used to think I wanted flares on my wagon, but the more I see sedans the more I just don't like em. Too boy-racerish. Then again the unflared sedans look like complete crap, so...

Not necessarily heavier rear end. It was also due the fact that the engine was in the rear of the car and lifting the throttle in a 911 has very distinct and sometimes bad repercussions to the handling of the car.

subaru's only way to really sell cars in the US, their way to differentiate
as for people who put front sedan fenders on the wagon, i think its pretty stupid. its wide up front but nothing to show for in the back. too strange for me.
