6'9" in GC8

So I just picked up a GC8... absolutely love the car but I need to fit a little better. Looking for advice/recommendations/experience in either remounting the existing seats back & down or dropping in new seats off of the standard mounts. I'd like to gain about 3-4 inches of leg room and or 3-4 inches of head room.
And no I'm not going to remove the seat and sit in the back :)
Thanks,
John

For clarification, your car is not a GC8.
GC8 was the model code for the GC-bodied WRX (EJ20T).
Your car is either a GCE or GME. GC is the sedan, while GM is the coupe. In each of these codes, the E means it's got the EJ25 under the hood.
Sorry for sounding like a nazi or something, but I just thought I'd fight the incorrect use of model codes.
Congrats on getting the absolute BEST looking Impreza ever made.
Definitely getting aftermarket seats (and probably brackets so it will slide further back) is the best option.

well let me correct the corrector.
GC8 is a vin chassis code.
his car is a coupe, therefor it is a GM6
the seden is a GC6
And we have all come to know them as the GC8 because of they are so much alike.
so there.

its nice to inform him of the codes...buts its generic to call them GC8...but i call mine a GM6

and before you say 'but the conversions thread says E' ;)
thats body code.
look at the vin number on any usdm RS
you will see either JF1GM6 or JF1GC6
as for modding the seats, I have ver 5 seats and they dont sit any lower than the stock seats, though the passenger seat (driver in japan) is height adjust able. There are really no hieght adjustable seats you could install other than the forester seats..
corboue? seats sit very low in the GC8 though. it all depends on the brackets you use.

I've got a similar problem with headroom and have been looking for a while.
No stock seat will work. Not WRX seats, not STI, they are actually slighting higher off the floor than the seats in my '01 2.5rs
I am looking into aftermarket seats, still recliners though. I have not yet found the seat that works, but I'll post when I do.
The stock seats have 5 to 6 inches of stuff between the slider and the sitting position. The sparco sliders for instance mount to a bracket that results in the slider sitting al ittle lower than the stock one, but this alone won't gain you much height.
Anyway, I don't have the answer except, don't waste your time looking at Subaru seats. None of them will work for you.

Not trying to jack the thread, but I am also still wanting to gain more room in my STi. I would gladly pay money for some quality modded rails that would lower the seats and possibly gain a couple inches more toward the back. I have considered doing this myself, but I am thinking that not knowing what I am doing could lead to some serious safety concerns. I don't want to get in any type of wreck and have my rails break apart causing possible injury. Anyone know who has the knowledge and skills to do this correctly?

Unfortunately, I don't have an RS to check the VIN on... :(
If that's the case, then why do you use 8 instead of 2? As it is, you are taking the GC8 from one table (Applied model codes) and GC6 from the other (VIN chassis codes).
I'm not trying to be a pain in the ass about this, but trying to clear it up for myself and others.

Why not just call it a GC?
That's technically correct (unless you have a coupe....) and is a bit easier to say.

I too am dragging my head in my car. I sealed the sunroof shut, and removed the guts. I then installed the non-sunroof headliner.
This gained me a little headroom, but I also hate sunroofs.
I pulled the drivers seat and mocked up supports, and then set in a Kirkey type racing seat. These are available in multiple widths, and have very little floor-to-butt padding.
This increased headroom dramatically.(sp?) I did not install the seat, but it appears even with some padding, you will gain about 4" of headroom.

Cool, thanks for the info :) FYI the VIN is GM6 for those of you interested. GC8 seems to be the popular name among my friends so that's where that came from on my end. Anyhow I'll let you all know what happens when I do the work.
Thanks!

If I had a nickel for every "it's not a GC8".....:p
| IronMonkeyL255 | 06-02-2004 04:04 PM |
I would have just made you a nickel richer.
I give up. People just don't seem to want to use the correct terms. I still think it works better as just 'GC', though.
I am still curious as to why it is a GC8 (model code) when they call the RS a GC6 (VIN code). It should either be GC2 and GC6 (VIN codes) or GC8 and GCE (model codes, which I think it should be).

Sparco seems to give a little room if you want some nice aftermarket seats... My b/f (6'6") put a pair in his WRX but now I can't see to drive. :furious: I'm 5'1" lol
I'd say it dropped about 3" lower.
Good Luck

Thanks for the info. I suppose you're right, but I can reach that high and I'm ONLY 6'1"
I see you're up in Redmond, I lived in that area from 1999 to 2002. Loved it.

bah.....whiners.....
I had a friend in college that we called 612 because he would not admit that he was 7 feet tall. He always said...6'11 and a half man.
He drove an Acura Integra. haaaaaa.
If you want leg room buy an Audi a8L. I just sat in one last night...holy crap. The back seat...dude you can recline in that mother. So big.
Otherwise I'd suggest getting some new sliders and some sparcos.

You should give up you don't even have an RS. GC would be refering to sedans only so you'd still be wrong if you had a coupe or wagon. There is no universal code so people say GC8, get over yourself.
I was gonna recommend sparcos too, they drop the seat height quite a bit. Only the new age WRX or STi seats will increase seat height, ones from the proper MY are probably ever so lower but it's pretty much the same.

Because there is no point in being so technical. Why don't we also say GC8 A, GC8 B, GC8 C, etc to the different applications of the GC8? Because it's a pain to do so. When you order parts from japan, you are ordering GC8 parts. Easier to understand from both sides.

I just purchased an aftermarket seat for my ahh, err GC. I got a adjustable corbeau seat with matching brackets and sliders. This is a good deal as for the brackets. Sparco sells them for $120.00. I got it for 79 since I bought these a set. love it. It sits low but still with a good view up ahead and you can still cruise around with that reclined seat.
