Painted brake calipers, question part 1

Painted brake calipers, question

How long did you guys realy what untill you drove your car? On the instrutions is says to what 24 hours. By the way the paint was alreay harding by the time we got to the fourth wheel. The total time taken to do all 4 was like under 2 hours, and the paint was supposed to last 6 hours untill it would start to harden. But on the other hand we got the job done and it looks marvelous.

Later,

I just waited until it wasn't sticky any more. I think it was about 5 hours since I painted the first caliper... but it was humid that day, so it took longer than usual. I just think of the "instructions" as recomendations. What color did you do them? Classic Porsche red? That's what I did mine in... Jake

Thanks THEDOO, I will be painting mine red, but we painted my roomates blue. In the case that we realy don't have to what 24 hours untill you drive your car I will have to do mine today. So if I remember I will take some pic's and post them up in the Member's Car Gallery. Thanks again for the info see you later.

Hey all, which kind did you use? Spray or brush on? Thanx.
White Knight 07-01-2001 01:11 PM

it was brush on.
Ethan 07-01-2001 01:39 PM

I waited about 15 hours, but that was just because I had nowhere to go that day :)

When we painted Kastle's we painted them and then left it up on jackstands overnight. He has a garage though. 24hours may be longer than needed, but if you drive on it too soon I imagine that you can get road crud stuck to the paint and ruin your semi-hard work ;)

Do they make a Black or Gold in this caliper paint?
thedoo 07-02-2001 01:57 AM

I know they make black, but I don't know about gold. I used a brush-on two-part paint on mine. Jake

Engine paint also works well. It's meant for engines so it can take very high temps. It's cheaper than "brake caliper paint" and comes in more (strange) colors. I used black and engine clear coat also. Waited about 6 hrs before driving.

any body ever paint their rotor hubs? Mine are rusting and looking mightie grundgy. I was thinking of painting my calipers, and might as well paint the hubs @ the same time...

silverSurfer - I was just thinking the exact thing. I think I'll try a coat of Rustoleum Aluminum since i have some sitting around. I used the satin black Rustoleum on the calipers (an admitted quick once over with a brush but, hell, it's holding up). Heheh. I'll let you know how it turns out.

Regarding above, I did mine last week with a flat artist brush and Rustoleum Aluminum paint. I didn't take the wheels off...just carefully painted through the spokes and onto the hub getting as close to the disk as I could. Sure beats the rust that was showing and looks pretty good!!

I waited overnight for em to dry just ot be sure

I want some good brush on paint, so I don't get overspray on everything. What brands should I look for?
J Colman 08-03-2001 02:52 PM

Foliatec all the way, two coats, and a 24 hour non driving period after
bratmantlz 08-03-2001 09:08 PM

hell yeah foliatec. looks great works great good stuff

Folia Tec

Folia Tec is OK for the street, but sucks for real racing. On my previous Eagle Talon Tsi AWD, I painted teh calipers blue, and I waited for them to dry. They looked great until one day I took it out to a road track, and under some severe lap duty aotl the paint on the front calipers bubbled and peeled off, so it looked really crappy.

So good for street, bad for track.

Painted calipers = RICE

Use flat black BBQ paint from Wal-Mart. Will definitely withstand any temp from your brakes. Will look cool too...stealthy. It will improve the looks of the greenish calipers without being flashy, so it doesn't qualify as rice.
ImprezedRS 08-06-2001 02:19 PM

Well I guess you call some of the new porsches ricey and even the 22b since they both have paitned calipers.
bratmantlz 08-06-2001 02:23 PM

painted calipers are great. they are not rice! well said imprezed rs
