Shift Boot DIY

This is a very simple short, little thing i did to my car because i hated the look of the shift boot and i just thought i would share this with you guys Smile
First thing remove the shift knob, then remove the center console that covers the e-brake and then the one that covers the shifter, the shift boot is attached to this piece.
Once the console is removed flip the shift boot like so

The shift boot is glued to the plastic piece that holds up the shift boot to the knob. Simply pull the shift boot from the plastic piece, it comes off very easily.
Now pull about an 1 1/2" or 2" of the shift boot out of the plastic piece like this.

Once you have done this flip the shift boot back over so it looks like it usually does and start putting everything back together. I recommend putting the shift boot through the shifter first and then puting the console back on. Then put the E-brake Console back on.
Once you have done this start threading the shift knob back on, once its threaded pretty good put the shift boot back on to the shift knob, and then tighten up the shift knob to whatever you like, then wala! your done.
This is what the shift boot will look like after your done.

This is what it looked like before

caution: When i pulled my shift boot out of the "modified" position there were some like dents in the leather from being on the shifter. So if you think your gonna go back and you dont want dents in your shift boot, DO NOT DO THIS.

this was also only after a couple days.

i think a better way would be to undo the clips in the metal surround on the other end of the boot, pull it out that way, and have the collar portion where it goes to the knob be stock. it looks bunchy like pantyhose your way.
| Keif | 03-23-2006 11:11 PM |
yea i was thinking about that but i couldnt figure out how to get it loose, is it just held on by clips?
| Handsdown | 03-23-2006 11:15 PM |
yeah little circular metal bracket clips. they look like they'd be hard to get off/on more than a few times.
| Keif | 03-23-2006 11:22 PM |
alright cool, ill take a look at them tomorrow, thanks :) btw are you on awj?

You wouldn't be able to pull much into the console. Think about how the fabric is already stretched, you would have to strectch it more. I was going to do that when I installed my STI shift trim, but realized it wouldn't be worth the trouble.
Maybe if you glue the top of the boot back down to the plastic ring it would not look as bunchy. I was going to try this mod myself before I saw this thread, but now I am not so sure that I want to mess with it. I just don't like all the excess fabric as it is right now.
Oh well, sometimes you open a can of worms....
And I am on AWJ....johnnyb there too.

I would take it back apart, coat the plastic ring in a soft (silicone) glue and then press the fabric onto the ring. You might as well cut away the extra you have stuffed through the ring since you already put holes in the boot. That will help get rid of some of the bunchy-ness. If you think about it the diameter of the fabric you are trying to wrap around the ring is a lot larger. So I would play with the setup for a bit before you apply the glue.
Let me know how it goes. I want to do something like this. You can always order another boot if you mess it up bad. Not that you want to, but hey, these things don't always go as planned. I have dremeled both the shift console and my front fenders to make mods like the STI shift ring and side repeaters.
Good luck. :D

i have been thinking about trimming down the shift boot and then cutting like 4 slits in it, and then sew those up so its the same size, cause like you said the reason its bunching up is because its alot larger now than before
| johnnyb | 03-27-2006 11:38 AM |
I was thinking that same thing. Let me see some pics if you decide to do it.

That sounds like a good idea. Somebody do it so I can see :)

heres my update: i dont have the balls to cut some slits in the shift boot, and those clips on the other side of the boot, they are able to take off but i wont be able to get them back on, i would have to buy a new one, due to the way subaru designed them, its like 3 clips, stabbing into a plastic piece that sticks out. Ill try and get a picture of it, im just to lazy right now :(

ew... sorry to be so blunt but that's ugly as ****. it looks like just what you did.. crumpled it up in there. hopefully you find a better alternative.

You can always order a new shift boot.
| Keif | 03-27-2006 12:56 PM |

you should talk to redlinegoods - they have a post in the vendors section - they sell actual leather boots (not like the OEM vinyl one) in the right shape/size, and are perfectly happy modifying them for you (so they could make it longer, etc.)

I personally don't like the bunched up look on shift boots. The best is just a polished shift lever, no boot, shift gate. Someone needs to make that. :)

gated shifters i hear are a p.i.t.a
| Keif | 03-28-2006 06:12 PM |
yea i heard they are at first but you get use to them

+1 on this, I couldnt be happier with their work. I purchased the shift boot, ebrake boot and armrest cover, and they look great. Not too expensive either.
