Hitch for STi

I'm looking for a hitch for my 04 STi. Tried the draw-tite hitch but I got some rattles in the back due to the exhaust hitting the hitch over road bumps... Clearance is too little (~1/4in).
Is there a good hitch out there that works with the STi? Also, in the process of installing the draw-tite hitch, I stripped one of the welded-on nut on the frame... Is there any way to fix this (besides welding)?
Thanks in advance!

why not get some kartboy long exhaust hangers for the muffler, so you can drop it down a bit and clear the hitch?

I thought that the hitch for one of the other Subaru vehicles was supposed to fit. Can't remember which car, though I think it was a wagon...

These work great, I have the draw-tite on my STI w/ the longer Kartboy hangers and it clears my Prodrive muffler w/no issues and no rattles.

Thanks, everyone! I will try the Kartboy hangers.

For those of you with larger muffler tips (Greddy, Blitz, etc.), the Subaru hitch works perfectly. I'm using one with longer Kartboy hangers on my Blitz Nur Spec Touring. I tried the Draw-Tite, but there is not enough clearance.

Read your STi manual . It states that the STi is not advised to use the vehicle for towing.

Please quote a page number and paragraph and I'll be glad to read it, and reread it. I have read thru the trailer section and cannot find where it says you should not tow with an STI(let alone a sedan) so please point it out to me and I'll gladly admit you are correct and take off my hitch. It mentions the warranty but never says you should not tow.
2004 Impreza WRX / WRX STI Owner's Manual, Page 8-35, 1st paragraph under SEDAN on the top right says Subaru doesn't offer a hitch but you should consult a professional hitch supplier for the vehicle...sounds like they think it can tow just fine but they don't supply the hitch.
It has the same frame as the normal Impreza(rated to 1000lbs or 2000 w/trailer brakes) with better running gear(brakes and tires) and more torque and a better drive train.

do you think that would work on my WRX as well? i have the hks ti exhaust and it has a huge tip, but there is a good amount of clearance. how much clearance do you need ???
| Abe Froman | 06-05-2004 05:13 PM |
If the Subaru hitch isn't enough the Kartboy long hangers are a full inch longer than stock, I'm sure that would be enough to clear it. These hangers are pretty solid pastic and will not move so 1/2" of clearance to the hitch bar should be plenty.
My hitch came off my old 2.0L WRX.

I like the drawtite(cuz I already have it) but I'm sure the Subaru one is a better fit and has more clearance.

question

Does anyone know, or at least have a guess, if the factory hitch for current Impreza would fit on gen. 1? I know the mounting dimensions are the same because aftermarket models are the same for gen. 1 and gen. 2, but one thing I'm not sure about is whether the arch above the tailpipe would clear the bumper skin. Maybe it's easy for someone to pull a WRX with an OE hitch (can't find one myself) next to an "old school" car, and do an eyeball check? I just want to buy a hitch with Subaru bucks.

Subaru factory hitch + Prodrive axle back = perfect fit...
STi muffler has to be smaller...
Subaru hitch will require some trimming of the rear bumper.
my $0.02

Actually, why would a hitch designed to fit a specific car require any bumper cutting at all (even though some didn't find it necessary)? Maybe originally it was for GC-GF, but not sold here.

I had fitment issues installing the Draw-Tite hitch onto my 2004 WRX Wagon. I yanked and yanked and slightly bent the hitch to line up the bolt holes with my car frame. It did fit, and I'm very happy with the install. Used regular length Kartboy hangers to my stock muffler. No clearance issues.

If you're referring to the Draw-Tite, my guess is no. It didn't fit with my Blitz Nur Spec Touring when I tried. However, the Subaru hitch has enough clearance with longer Kartboy exhaust hangers to clear my exhaust tip (with room to spare).

The Draw-Tite is packaged neater than the Subaru one. So, visually, it looks better. Much of the bar on the Draw-Tite is tucked up under the bumper cover, with only the hitch portion showing below. On the Subaru hitch, the bar and the hitch are at the same level - sitting below the bumper. But, it's black and not too noticeable. Take it from someone who's tried both... The Subaru has more clearance for larger exhaust tips.
