Aftermarket Taillights part 1

Aftermarket Taillights
Anyone have any pictures of aftermarket taillights?
mbeach 09-27-2004 04:34 PM

High Road:
Not too many folks in Subarus have them. The few styles out there are pretty unnattractive. The Morettes look alright, but they are scarce. With the rarity and potential legal problems, most of us just stick to stock.

Low Road:
I've never seen the tail lights of ANY car whose owner thought that it'd be a good idea to put on a set of altezzas. Spend that money elsewhere, and your tail lights will get plenty of viewers -even stock ones.
subiekid 09-27-2004 04:36 PM

most people on this site hate altezas, not gona see many on here. try ebay for pictures. and do a search in the members car gal.

Why would you ever want any taillights other than the stockies?

I don't see anything wrong with differing opinions & mod preference.

Subjectivities aside, the taillights on the my2002-2003 could use some improvement when it comes to the reverse lighting. Clear lens as in the my2004+ helps, even with the same wattage bulb.

Having said that, there is the real issue of leakage in at least 2 types of aftermarket taillights. I believe (based on my own tests) that it can be remedied.

Here is a modified altezza to accept an aux reverse light:
I don't see anything wrong with differing opinions & mod preference.
Wow, I never knew any nice aftermarket taillights existed for the impreza. That altezza has got to be the BEST I've ever seen, it looks like stock but a bit nicer.

Then again, I'm so damn used to all the civics with their fake altezzas. It's starting to get a bit old.

These where on my 02 but leaked considerbly..

Actually, those started life as the clear altezza type (see picture below). I bought them used with evidence of leak in one of them. The clear lens is ideal for adding brighter reverse units.

Going back to topic, in addition to these altezzas, which comes in clear (as pictured above), "jaguar style" (as brunetmj posted), and smoked; and the morettes (as mbeach mentioned); there are the TYC taillights that come in 2 or 3 different flavors. I recall seeing several photos in the member's gallery with the TYC's. So the keyword "TYC" could probably point you to some pictures.

I'm curious whether my diagnosis & remedy for the leak on my altezzas (post#14 & 15 on http://forums.nasioc.com/forums/showthread.php?t=601912 ) work for that type too.

SubWRX2002, in general, expect to encounter leakage issue on the ones that look like the altezza type. The TYC type may not have that problem.

satyra is the exception to this rule.

he's the only person i've seen who has made aftermarkets look good.

then again, he is a master of MANY trades and does some purely amazing things with a basic machine shop and some pretty easy-to-come by materials... SO....

stick to stock lights! with some different bulbs, they can look beautiful. (i put LED bulbs in my turn signals... at night they're great, daytime they could be a bit more omni-directional... but all the time they're clear when off and look great.)
Magnum626 09-28-2004 03:05 AM

ahh just get the cf trim for the stock lights....

very nice effect...

^yea, i htink those look good...more like the 04s
WRXSleeper 09-28-2004 08:15 AM

i'd rather waste money on things to go fast and turn better and not leak and cause problems down the road for me.

Thanks.

Regarding sticking to stock lights though, I would have to disagree. Imho, the diffuse lens (of the oem my2002-2003 GD/GG) makes the benefit of bulb upgrades a bit reduced. While some if not most aftermarket taillights may not last as a plug-and-play, it is my hope with threads I posted like above that you can get a much better setup than stock, still keep it legal, and not have to pay the amount of money you would have had to if the particular aftermarket taillight were to be better/perfectly designed.

Perhaps the extent of modifications does not need to be as severe. With the "jaguar style" posted by brunetmj & WRBlueMeanie for example, even sticking to oem bulbs will already show some lighting improvement, thanks to a proper reflector design & a clear lens that doesn't reduce light output as much as the oems. The only thing I would do if I had a Jaguar style is to add some insulation (per post #14 & 15 in the thread I linked above), and there shouldn't be any leaks.

my 2 cents
Rebellion 09-28-2004 11:11 AM

if I ever get around to fixing my rear bumper, I think I'm going to upgrade to the 04+ tail lights.
satrya 09-28-2004 11:12 AM

oh wow.....
Perhaps this is wtlw, but I just realized that Crutchfield sells the infamous APC taillights (see link & picture below). Last time I looked, Crutchfield only sold A/V parts (& computers long time ago). I wonder how well these things sell.

In the spirit of listing aftermarket taillights, here's another one (perhaps the first aftermarket for the GD):

odd... I thought the APC's never got DOT approval and never ended up going on sale. (pf course they're hideously ricey but that's just my opinion)

Dude get some morettes

Morette tail lights are so damn disgusting... so are those APC's...
odd... I thought the APC's never got DOT approval
Fwiw, many aftermarket taillights have a "DOT" sign or say that they are DOT approved in the box or description. I'm not sure if they all really are.
Handsdown 09-28-2004 01:15 PM

DOT does not "approve" any kind of product. whether they are legal or not is up to your state's DMV. when they say they're approved, they're just BSing.

if it says 'passed' or 'approved' or 'street-legal' they are just feeding you bs.

all of those packages also say "check state and local laws" and some sort of disclaimer. this is what you really need to do.
rites 09-28-2004 01:18 PM

for the sake of saveing money, might you smoke the stock ones insteed?
satrya 09-28-2004 02:03 PM
for the sake of saveing money, might you smoke the stock ones insteed?
I suppose it really depends on 2 things: what your preference is, and what you want to do in terms of having a non-oem-look taillights.

Personally, I believe that the taillights off my2002-2003 could use some improvements in therms of reverse lighting. In that case, adding tint would be counterproductive. Using aftermarket units with clear lens on the other hand, would make lighting upgrades easier. But again, it depends on what you want & prefer.
pdippel 09-28-2004 03:20 PM

Interesting link regarding DOT approval

I always thought the morette tail lights were pretty ugly also until i saw them on a WRX . They din't look nearly as bad as I thought. In addition they have rear fog lights, which are handy where I live.

Vincent another problem with aftermarket tail lights is the quaility of the metal. It corroded on mine along the top where the truck meets the lights.
