Air Conditioning Removal

I know these threads never get taken seriously, but before you question removing the A/C, consider the fact that I've already decided to do it.
Having said that, how hard is it to remove my air conditioning? Do I need a professional shop to do anything, such as vent the freon? Anyone have instructions on how to do this?

dwx vented his freon with the "my turboxs tmic rubs through the AC line and vents it all" method. That worked pretty well.

Yes, just get a shop to reclaim the refrigerant for you and you're good to go. When you take the compressor out make sure you don't tip it around a lot since there is oil inside you don't want coming out.
Make sure you get all the lines, compressor, condenser, evaporator in the A/C unit under the instrument panel.

have a shop reclaim the rerigerant for you as stated above, disconnect lines and pull out your radiator the yo ucan remove the condensor and the compressor.

Thanks for the replies. So I can just pretty much unhook anything related to the A/C and I don't have to block any lines off or anything? Does anyone have scoobymods-style directions for this?

My Subaru Service Manuals have detailed instructions for removing all the various A/C components. Not that this necessarily helps you right now, but it demonstrates the value of having a set of Service Manuals. ;)
The one thing the Service Manual can't help you with is what to do with the belt shroud and cable mount that no longer have a place to fasten to, once the A/C compressor is removed.

p.s. I looked for a ScoobyMods-type write-up a while back, and couldn't find one.

The only other things I would mention are that you can make the belt cover look pretty nice with a cerfeul dremel tool job, and it will mount up just fine with the one bolt and alignment pin. (See my engine bay pic here:

Also, I made a block off plate where the hoses run through the fire wall into the evaporator. It was just a piece of aluminum with a rubber gasket behind it, and it bolts right in place. (Sorry no pic)
For the record I weighed everything I took off in at 22 lbs. (without the refrigerent).

hehe, I just put a piece of aluminum tape over the hole... works fine.

I just spoke with a few local shops who told me that the r134a refrigerant is ozone friendly and I could just vent it myself. I had a hard time believing them, but they assured me it was ok. Can I really just vent it myself?

I've heard 20-35 lbs

Nick, a couple questions:
*what did you do with the throttle cable that's attached to the belt cover? It's hard to tell from the picture...
*Did you remove the evaporator & lines under the dash, or just block off the lines at the firewall?
Thx!
-Steve

Well I've removed everything except the evaporator. I'm not really sure what to unbolt. I removed the glovebox but I don't know which piece is the evaporator. Anyone have a picture?

The STi is drive by wire, no throttle cables to worry about! :)
I didn't bother dealing with the evaporator and lines under the dash as the service manual indicated this was pretty involved to get to. I just made a block off plate with a piece of aluminum and gasket material. If I ever have the dash pulled apart for something else I might pull the evaporator then.

It's on the back(firewall) side of the HVAC unit in the center of your picture. I haven't bothered to take the evaporator out yet, as the Service Manual indicates you need to take the HVAC unit completely out to get at it.
-Steve
p.s. I simply used some aluminum tape to seal off the lines at the firewall.

Naturally, this would be completely illegal. Illegal but not harmful to you or the environment. But illegal.
Buy one of the "AC charging kit" connector cables. Take your car to a large parking lot. Prop your hood open. Take the cap off your AC line. Attach your charging kit *without the can of coolant*. Put the other end in an empty peanut butter jar. Turn the knob. Coolant will start flowing out and immediatly evaporating.
1) The adapter cable will get very cold. That's why you're not just sticking a screw driver in the schrader valve.
2) Atomized oil will be coming out with the coolant in a fine mist. That's why you want to stand back. Don't breathe it. That's also why you don't want to do this in your garage.
3) The jar should catch most of the oil that comes out with the refridgerant. stuff a rag in there to keep as much atomized oil as possible from blowing out and making your whole engine bay greasy.

that's the blower and Recirculate/Fresh door box under there. You need to pull that out then to the left of that as you're looking at it you should be able to slide the evaporator out. I should have taken pictures of mine.
I think I posted a how to in the weight reduction thread in the Dress-Up forum

How much does the evaporator itself weigh? Is it worth tearing my car apart to get to?

I decided not to take the evaporator out for now and I've been driving my car with the A/C out the past couple of days. I've noticed that occasionally when I first start the car, I hear a fairly loud squeaking noise. I thought it was the v-belt on the crank/alternator but it looks like its the proper tension and its seated correctly. Could this have to do with my no longer having an A/C belt?
| ellisnc | 03-07-2004 04:19 AM |
Check to make sure the belt doesn't have oil on it for one and make sure it's tight enough
| whtlegacy | 03-07-2004 11:56 AM |
how tight should the belt be? i was once told that if you can deflect it with one finger by one finger's width, that was the right tension.
| ellisnc | 03-07-2004 01:36 PM |
should be fine...
You sure it's not a Toyota? :D Those things always have accessory belt sqeaks!
