Rally Armor

After some hesitation on the "mud flap look," I finally pulled the trigger on a set of Rally Armor flaps. While doing the install, I got a good look at the underside of the rocker panels and realized I should have done this sooner. I'm still not 100% on look, but I think the protection they offer outweighs any aesthetic considerations.

Yes. There is a link to an installation video on the RA website that is worth viewing.

I've been happy with mine. I got the first batch without the Rallyarmor insignia. the only issue I have is, now that I installed the h-tech's, the flaps rub going over large speed bumps.

hmm...the mudflap look is starting to grow on me...

at first i didnt like the mudflap look either, but now im realling diggin it.. not only looks but its really functional...

The RA flaps aren't that great due to the fact that they are so rigid. You want it to be just a little compliant so they won't grind on every thing they touch and will give instead of simply becoming abraded. RA uses some kind of ABS-thermoplastic blend to make flaps; polyurethane or SBR is a much better choice.
I was unimpressed by their cheap mounting hardware as well. You can cobble together your own set of flaps with superior fasteners for less than half the price of what they charge.
They look cool, but there are more functional choices than the RA flaps.

those skid plates dont look half bad either...what kind of aerodynamic value do u think those have along with protection?

uh they aren't that rigid I can flex them easily in my hands. There stiff to insure that they don't bend or flex during normal driving, but they do give when you bottom them out on something
some rallybling

I love the mud flaps to. They were cake to install and I dont think their that cheap. From what I've been told the poly ones are the cheapies.

Yea, I love mine :D
| alan ling | 06-15-2006 11:37 PM |
I think they are too stiff as well. Mine rub all the time on stupid speed bumps around here. Speed bumps are breeding as they have them everywhere. Keeps rock chips away from the sides of my car though and that is a good thing.
| cperkins | 06-16-2006 12:20 AM |
I need these, things scraping on my car gives me the willies though. ::shudders::

Mine is STOCK height and the Rally Armor rubs--not only on speed bumps but during any kind of enthusiastic driving with a dip in the road. I agree that I'd like them even more if they weren't so stiff. I'm worried that they might jam against the road so hard that they'll mess up the mounting points. If I were to lower the car, I'd have to raise them.
That being said, under normal driving they only rub on speed bumps (so not that often) and they definitely keep the car much cleaner. Here's mine. I was hoping to buy ones with blue lettering, but I couldn't wait so I just bought black ones:

if only they were 1/3 shorter, i would be all over them..

The problem with the rally armor's is that they don't look very aggressive. They look kinda like old skool OBS style.
I try to make my own, oversized, no rounded corners, etc.

No rubbing issues with mine yet over most of the local speed bumps I encounter. Then again, I'm running on SPT Pink springs - if I was still rolling on Prodrives, I would make new holes in the flaps and raise them the same amount the springs dropped my car.
In just a few days of use, I'm amazed at the amount of beating the "business side" of the flaps have taken. Better there than on my car...

I have a project going to see if I can customize a set. In the meantime I just put some clearshield (clear bra) behind the wheels to keep it from chipping up.
| GraphicWRX | 06-16-2006 08:03 AM |
I thought about selling custom cut sets of the clear bra for all four corners. I am not sure how many people would be interested.

As soon as I finish the guards I will post some pics.

dude i love the look. I wanted a set of the metallic (silver) lettering but i got the red since they were available. The mudflaps make my car look a lot wider, ive also noticed a lot less dirt on the side of my car b/c of them. +2
| keoni004 | 06-16-2006 11:55 AM |
I love mine too...definitely make the car more functional while keeping it clean. My only gripe would be the install; I've talked to a few others with wagons, and while the install is still straightforward, the adjustability of the flaps (laterally) is minimal at best. I'll try to snap a pic later.

I want a set of mud flaps, but all the ones I have seen look a bit low, and since you guys have some rubbing issues on bumps and spirited driving, something a little shorter might be better for me. If any of you have been to Barbados, and seen a lot of our roads, you'll know I'll be scrapping those bad boys regularly. ;) Sure it wouldn't offer as much protection, but it would offer protection in the area worst affected. I also think the shorter mud flaps would make them more subtle. I hope Cannonshooter doesn't mind but I chopped his pic to show what I am talking about. It was just a quick 5 minute photoshop session, so no judges holding up score cards please... :D

pioneer_sti - thanks for the chop.. great job.
i placed my order for rally armor flaps yesterday.
I am not at all a fan of how low they hang (asthetically as well as rubbing) and i fully intend to re-Drill the holes to make them higher and possibly in slightly more.
Your chop made me feel 100% better about my purchase, they look great at a shorter length.
Pat
Perhaps note larger, and directly above or on the picture that this is a chop to shorten the mud flaps so that people dont get the wrong idea and think that RA's come that short.. :D

The rubbing issue (that plagues people with RA flaps) is completely alleviated without losing area that can block debris by simply using a more compliant material. It is possible to make your own or buy them premade (Prodrive $).
| pioneer_sti | 06-29-2006 03:12 PM |
Pat,
Good idea about the note, thanks man. :)
Specialev,
A softer material will help to reduce the chances of damage when the flaps make contact with a section of the road surface, BUT a softer flap, of the same length, can't stop the flap from rubbing, which I think is what most people find annoying. The Prodrives, from the pics I have seen, offer two height levels by having two sets of holes. This is what Pat is talking about doing to his Rally Armors when he gets them. He has a very good idea. For summer months he (or anyone else who makes a second set of holes) can use the new holes to mount the flap higher (and more inward if possible), so the flap will be short. For winter months, or any planned off road trips ;) the flaps can be lowered for extra protection.
