Yellowstars vs Ion Crystals
Bulb on the passenger side is 55w Hella Yellowstar (which is what I ordered, but for some reason the box says MADE IN KOREA and there's a label on it that says MADE IN GERMANY and HELLA HIGH INTENSITY "PULS" <sp>, which is a different bulb altogether!).
Bulb on the driver's side is 55w PIAA Ion Crystal. This particular bulb has been used for 2 years, if that makes a difference.
Just from looking at the bulbs, the PIAAs have a richer yellow dichroic look to them. Once they're powered up, the PIAAs maintain the yellowness advantage (see the individual pics below and notice the yellow border around the foglight housing on the PIAAs). Unfortunately, this also hurts them in the light output (see the pics of the view from the Hella vs. the PIAA).
I'd like to test them in real foglights (not the OEM junk) because IMO, neither of the bulbs is even close enough to being bright enough to handle any kind of fog. The way the WRX has the fogs mounted so deep in the bumper really hurts the amount of light that comes out (my RS was much better in this respect).
So, my recommendation is that if you wanna floss yo rice, go with the PIAAs because of the yellowness and that neat rainbow pattern they throw on the ground. However, the Hellas are $11/pair while the PIAAs are about $40/pair. And they're brighter.
I can only wonder what PIAA Ion Yellows look like.
I will leave one PIAA and one Hella in there until the next Queens Meet if anybody wants to see the difference in person. I also have one Narva Range Power in one headlight and one stock bulb in the other, but that's a different story. ;)

Not as even an output (especially around the edges, where it does that neat/ricey rainbow thing :) ) or even as bright, but yellower!

Man, don't make me put the stock bulbs back in there and take pics of those too! :p
Seriously, there's no way a yellow coated bulb is going to look like Lexus/Benz foglights... this is about as yellow as they get. You definitely notice the difference between these and stock, but it won't knock your socks off. It's kind of like Blaze Yellow vs. regular yellow.

maybe it is the picture that doesn't show the yellowish too well:)
mmmm........I should get a digit camera to take a pic of my fog bulb too. I get very yellow light on the ground.;)

What you are seeing is the headlamp in with the fogs

On second reevaluation, the Hellas are noticeably brighter than the PIAAs and they light up a much larger area on the road.

hey we also want a review of the narva range finders!

I bought some yellowstars from Susquehanna and they were a slightly higher wattage (65/85 or something). I also replaced the stock foglights with Hella 500s, also yellow.
I drive weekly between Chicago and Peoria, where there can be some serious fog, and the yellowstars do work well. The one thing is, they appear less bright, but throw things into better relief so you can see them at night, probably because it's not as much strain on the eye to contrast dark and light from whiter headlights. This works well on an otherwise dark country road or highway, but when in town with other traffic or streetlights, that advantage is lost. Fortunately, when I 'm actually home in Chicgao, I take the train instead of my car.

Yotsuya, how yellow are the 500's? Are they Lexus/Benz yellow?
Xian, you're close enough to getting your Narvas... you can review them yourself! :p Seriously, they're the exact same color as the stock bulbs, but slightly brighter.

Yotsuya; exactly what did you get from Susquehanna?

I have two pairs of Hella Optilux Xenon White bulbs lying around. They are 9007s so they will fit WRXs and new age 2.5RSs. If anyone wants them, let me know.

narva range power blue bulbs?
ridinlow...
now you right about getting them BUT you really don't want to write about them in a review...since i work in the speciality lighting industry i pretty much think eveythihng out there sucks!:D the company i work for (which shall remain nameless becasue i don't want people call me up asking about headlight bulbs which we don't really sell) sells narva line and they are a very good german company with ties to Osram... as for the Range finders...i would hate to waste my time putting them in only to hate them  so that is why i asked. when i opened them up to see the "blue coating" i already wasn't too thrilled with them...
but i guess i'll have to put them in and see..i do have a feeling that they will be for sale really soon or find a nice home in my altima.
one last quest there ridin...how are they at nice in the rain without your fogs on? can you really see the road or do they get washed out on the nice shiny road?

PS
when i ordered H4 i wanted H4 not 9003s which i am also a little unhappy with...they are NOT i repeat NOT the same bulb.
They look the same and fit the same but they do not light up the same way. The H4 have a different beam pattern than the 9003.
however the H4s are not DOT legal. while the US 9003 ANSI is legal. ok i am done whinning

xian,
Buy a pair of my Optilux bulbs. The Weasel has these bulbs. So if you were at the Queens meet, you should have seen them. :)
Whoops... scratch that. I only have the 9007 bulbs. They won't fit your car. Sorry.

Xian, I don't really understand your post. Are you saying you like or dislike the Hellas or the Narvas?
I haven't tried driving at night in inclement weather yet with just the Narvas alone (not that I'd do that anyway, I'd light up the fogs as well).

there was a guy on here that somehow had yellow lenses (glass) on his fogs in his WRX... i think that is the only thing you could do to get the yellow like the Lexus'. i WANT that yellow for snow/rain/fog, and bought the Hella Yellow Stars.. they were so-so, not *that* yellow and one burned out after a couple months, so the stockers went back in :(

Yeah, I believe the people with yellow fogs painted them that way.

Y'all can get a set of the clear foglight protectors from McDade. Then you can paint those yellow w/ that special light paint. That way you can have yellow and white light whenever you want by taking the foglight protectors on and off.

yup,
i would be one of the people that has painted yellow lenses. I had it back in '99 with my 2.5RS and it does look as yellow as the Lexus fogs. The Krylon spray paint that I used was made for doing stained glass and can be found at some craft stores.
The yellow paint is not very durable and can chip from road debris. I would recommend you get the clear covers and paint the inside of them.
Foliatec also sells yellow tint that is made specifically for the headlights. Haven't tried these yet but maybe I will later.

Ridinlow, the fogs being recessed into the bumper doesnt have anything to do with output. Look at the reflector and how it projects light. The direction is inversed. The lights arent recessed far enough to hurt the light output. The problem is they are factory fogs and they suck :)
| RidinLow | 01-07-2002 09:49 PM |
True, but they stuck out far enough in my 2.5RS so that my PIAA bulbs would lay a bright pretty/ricey rainbow pattern directly in front of the car. I miss that. :p
I think I'm going to get a set of amber Hella 500's and Hella FF75 driving lights.
