Airbag Resistor Fix part 1

SoLo OnE 08-26-2002 10:29 AM

Airbag Resistor Fix

Two 3 ohm resistors.

Bend each one into a U shape and jam it into the end of the airbag plug under the seat.

The light will come on when you start the car then go off after a few seconds once it sees the correct resistance.

Cost - $0.25.

Factory Subaru Fix for seat airbags

If you need to remove the factory seats in the front to replace them like I did in my car here is the simple fix.

I found a fix for the WRX computer fault when you remove the seats. There is a shunt that you can buy from Kentmore tools. They are in Minnesota.

The part number is 98299PA040

It retails for $9.95

It is basically a 3 ohm 1 watt resistor but in the plug so it plugs right in.

All you do is un plug the box at the end of the cable. Disconnect the battery cable and cut the wires on the yellow plug under the seat. Then solder on 2 connectors that will plug in to the the box you got from Kentmore. Make sure to heat shrink them up so they don't short out.

The cool thing is this actuall is a subaru part # and you can also order from your local subaru dealer.

The resistor works also but this is just a little cleaner.

it's between 3-5 ohm would work
but since i couldn't find a 3ohm reisstor
i stuck 3 - 10 in paralle and it worked

since i needed 6 for both side, it's 1 buck something.
whiterabbit 01-16-2003 01:43 AM

can someone give me a hand here.

I bought some
3.3k-Ohm Resistors from Radio shack
1/4 watt 5% tolerance

will these work? or does that mean its like 3000 ohms?
ResQDawg3 01-16-2003 10:58 PM

anyone?

You're 3 orders of magnitude off the required resistance, I highly doubt that would work. Give it a shot and let us know what happens:devil:

If the ECU is expecting a narrow range of values like 3-5 ohms, I'm betting 3k ohms looks like an open to the computer.
whiterabbit 01-16-2003 11:31 PM

yea i think i probably have to special order from radio shack

So i want to be clear on the exact sequence of things, mainly so i don't accidentally trip the seat side airbags and have them blow up in my face.

1. Turn off the car
2. unbolt the seats
3. unplug the airbag power plug from the cable
4. bend the resistors into U shape and stick into the plugs
5. turn on car, warning light comes on....then turns off?

Do i have to disconnect the battery at all during this procedure?

Yes you certainly disconnect the battery when messing with airbag thing. Pretty sure you should wait about 15 minutes after dissconnecting the battery to unplug those. That would really suck if they went off.

Im going to be doing the same thing next week so in addition here's my questions.
1. 3 ohm resistors,,correct? How many per side? 2?
2. Negative side of the batttery?? disconnect?
Leonardo 04-19-2003 11:09 PM

Or just get the airbag computer with two inputs instead of 4.

That is, if you want to do it cleanlly!

Leo's getting new seats too???

You wouldn't happen to have pictures you could send me of this arrangement, would you? I changed my front seats and am having a dickens of a time tracking down 3.3 ohm resistors. this sonds much cleaner...

But you cannot go back to the OEM seats with this kit, right< b/c you cut off the factory wiring harness connector?
dwx 04-20-2003 10:24 AM

I would just use the resistors. I guess I don't understand how cutting off and resoldering new connectors onto your factory wires is a "cleaner" solution. I believe when he says get 2 3ohm resistors he means one for each side.

Airbag fix issue

Last year I got my seats stolen from my 07 STI.
...holes cut the airbag cords. :furious:
I got Recaros intead and did not mind the airbag light until I needed inspection.
Now I need to get rid of the light to pass the inspection.
I tried to plug in the airbag resistors that I bought from rallysportdirect.com into yellow wires ( this made sense according to the wiring diagram) but it did not work.
Anybody here found a solution to a similar problem?
Thanks
kpluiten 12-16-2009 11:46 AM

You need more than the resistors because you also need to compensate for the passenger detection system in the passenger seat.

And holy old thread bump batman.
mrjenkins 12-16-2009 12:32 PM

:(
Thanks... This is going to be trouble
Badler 12-16-2009 12:40 PM

I think you need to get the bladder out of an 06/07 passenger seat, put it under the cushin and plug it in. It is weight sensitive. That is what had to be done when I had Sparcos. Not sure/doubt if the resistor will fix that?
mrjenkins 12-16-2009 03:23 PM

i dont know if taking out the instrument panel to disable the light is easier :(
yo14jman 12-25-2009 10:14 PM

I put gauges in where my clock pod was and the dash airbag light is on now...would this work for that? See below link.....
i dont know if taking out the instrument panel to disable the light is easier :(
That wouldn't change the fact that without the resistors, NONE of the airbags work...
Mul 12-26-2009 12:59 AM

is your airbag light even part of inspection? I know it's not over here in NY. And for the guy who put a gauge pod in and now has the light on......that little light in your factory clock pod is part of the whole srs sysytem wiring. I'm pretty sure you have to remove it from the pod housing and plug it into the harness. And sort of hide it under your now awesome gauges.

hope that helps.

is the plug under the seat just a 2 prong plug? I haven't pulled my seat out yet and cant see underneath
badwheel 04-03-2010 12:01 PM

I am putting some RS seats in m 07 STI and am aldo curious about the weight sensitive bladder thing. Can it be wired so the passenger air bag is just always on?

I could be wrong, but I'm pretty sure that's what the airbag resistor fix does. When the airbag is plugged in like normal, the ECU sees ~3 ohms from one point to the other on the plug. When you unplug it, the ECU sees an open (infinite ohms). By plugging in the resistor, you're tricking the ECU into thinking the airbag is there as normal.

You will need to swap the bladder into the new passenger seat.
In addition to this, you will need to swap or bypass the seat position sensor on the driver's side. This thread will help you out in swapping the bladder.
