Another painted 2004 STi steering wheel... part 1

Another painted 2004 STi steering wheel...
I like the way this mod turned out - the whole feel of the interior changes. The original silver on the airbag cover really detracts from other interior features. I took the airbag off for painting. If you do this, just make sure you disconnect the battery and ground yourself before you touch the connectors. Also make sure you have a #30 Torx bit that can go on an extension. Now to find some black carpet (flame suit on).

That looks awesome ... Good job ... :D

real men leave the battery connected :p

j/k while its true I havent ever disconnected the battery when doing airbags (dodges have a lot of dead horns, and the fix is replacing the bag, as the button is in the bag) and that most dealership techs dont unhook the battery, that is not something I would recomend. The chances of it going off are EXTREMELY SLIM, but anything is possible especially when talking about people that dont/didnt do this for a living every day.

<<<has done probably 20 Dodge airbags without unhooking the battery

I probably would too but it's so dry here and there is so much static, I am almost trailing a plasma cloud  Can you say boom ? Small talcum mushroom cloud?

Looks good. Did you use the VHT Vinyl dye stuff?

No I used a European brand - just said black vinyl dye on the can - the rest was gibberish
neuspeed 08-15-2005 10:08 AM

Nice job though doesn't it seem a bit too glossy?
Xymox 08-15-2005 10:29 AM

Wow. That only looks about 10 times better. :)
CatfaceType-R 08-15-2005 10:34 AM

Very sweet man....that is why i didn't want to get an 04, but now that i've seen this I really don't mind getting an 04. Can you give some more info on how you did this?

-thanks

I have concerns but I hope it will fade a little with exposure to sun. The paint I used was not labelled as gloss or matte

Thanks, the process is;

Obtain paint - do a search in the forums for correct type

Mask off or remove the airbag

Paint the airbag

Remove masking or reinstall airbag

It's a great DIY job - high on satisfaction, low on spilled blood and shaved skin
Siper2 08-15-2005 12:09 PM

Wow, I like that a *lot*. :)
DieselClown 08-15-2005 01:17 PM

very very very NICE!

I need to go looking for a nice high quality vinyl sticker to cover up the center eblem or something as well. Then I just need to paint the trim rings around the gauges and do something with the shifter trim (I already have the CF trim and S203 red hazard button).

Very cool, looks great. Have instructions on removing the bag?
main 08-15-2005 07:40 PM

that actually does look good.
spooledwrx 08-15-2005 07:59 PM

Awesome! Its like the interior is turning into S203-quality. And you are right about how that one little piece changes the look and feel of the interior. I LOVE do-it-yourself-mods!
Blue5spdWRXWgn 08-15-2005 09:28 PM

9-2X carpet is black.
LA 08-15-2005 09:54 PM

that looks really good, nice job
volkl23 08-16-2005 02:28 AM

Looks very clean. I like it.
Handsdown 08-16-2005 02:40 AM

damn, i love that interior.

And one day later, I like it even more. :D

In fact, the silver STi logo makes the wheel look just as good, if not better--depending on my mood--than the '05 wheel.

Wouldn't be so bummed out about getting an '04 STi wheel, now, if I do a dash swap with my new engine next year, and end up with an '04. Heh!

=S2=
WRXDriftR 08-16-2005 01:03 PM

now just paint the shifter trim to match the darkness

yah can you give that info as well :D or link us up to something that can help us do that.

thanks

There's a write-up for removing the airbag for the '02 and '04 STi steering wheel here:

quentinberg007 08-16-2005 02:42 PM

That looks WAY better than stock. I always hated the stock 04 STi steering wheel.

i also did this mod last week. i ordered the vinyl dye from summit racing, here's the link:

http://store.summitracing.com/default.asp?Ntt=dye&Ntk=KeywordSearch&DDS=1&searchinresults=false&N=0&target=egnsearch.asp

mine pretty much looks the same. except i didn't bother taking off anything. i just put painters tape all over the steering wheel and on the middle piece, plus i just put a big garbage bag behind the wheel to cover up everything else. it came out awesome!
