Anyone been to Acropolis? part 1

Jon Bogert 12-12-2003 11:06 AM

Anyone been to Acropolis?
Looks like I'm going to be able to attend this year. I'd love to hear any spectating, hotel, restaurant, etc tips specific to the Acropolis rally from those of you who have been there.

Thanks, -Jon
ANZAC_1915 12-12-2003 04:30 PM

Just an FYI, their date just changed by a week I think.
Jon Bogert 12-12-2003 05:01 PM

Yeah, we were waiting to hear. Certainly makes getting hotel rooms annoying: "We need a reservation for Wed-Sat, then again for the Wed-Sat the week after." :D
johnfelstead 12-12-2003 05:07 PM

I went this year. Brilliant rally.

If you need any specific info drop me an email. I stayed in Delphi, stunning scenery up there.
JohnP555 12-13-2003 08:58 AM

I also am looking to go to the Acropolis Rally next year with a buddy of mine. Was wondering if anyone had any info on this Rally, its sights, sounds, and the overall experience of being in Greece.

BTW: Jon Bogert very interesting that we are both from PA:D

small world. I was in the hotel acropole, i drove past the amalia every morning on my way out of Delphi. You couldnt miss our hire car in delphi, it stood out a bit. :D

View from my hotel room was stunning too.

Hopefully you saw the American archaology students that were staying in Delphi? They were a great laugh.

My pictures from the rally are all up on my website http://www.johnfelstead.co.uk/rally/wrc/acropolis_2003.htm
MK19 12-14-2003 04:34 AM

Yeah, I saw your car runnin around a bit. And yes, I saw the students too- one was even from right here in my town! Crazy :p
 :alien:
johnfelstead 12-14-2003 04:45 AM

was it on 2 or 4 wheels at the time? The road up to delphi is now refered to as the Delphi hillclimb. :D

The students were staying in the hotel next to mine, sort of above us, so we got quized every night by them hanging off their balcony when we got back covered in dust. They hadnt heard of rallying before and i think they thought we were a bit nuts. :D They were a nice bunch.
MK19 12-14-2003 04:47 AM

I frequented the bar at the split. Know the one? the outdoor tables and such... I saw your car drive by, on 4 wheels no less, several times. I wish I could afford to go again this next season.
johnfelstead 12-14-2003 04:53 AM

not sure, there were a few roads that forked, seemed to be at both ends of the villiage. If you headed from the lowest road towards the oracle there was a great restaraunt at the first major junction that we ate in, also one right at the top of the main stone stairway in the centre of delphi.

This year Delphi was quiet as they moved the rally HQ to the coast, but i prefered that as you got to see Greece as it really is rather than as any town becomes when a rally is in for the week.

Out of all the events i attended this year, Acropolis was by far the best.
JohnP555 12-14-2003 07:45 PM

Great to hear!!!

Sounds like the Rally Acropolis is a wonderful time. I just saw on WRC.com that they finally posted the final schedule for 2004. I see that the rally has been moved to the first weekend in June. Similarly I saw that they are also running JWRC the same weekend. Should prove to be a good time.

How is the nightlife during the Acropolis Rally event. My buddy and I are die hard rally fans, but can always appreciate hanging and partying with the folks in the area:disco:
MK19 12-14-2003 10:12 PM

There is no nightlife in Delphi to speak of... unless of course there is a band of you all going.
JohnP555 12-14-2003 11:09 PM

No nightlife huh?

Well thats a bit of a bummer, but still no worries cause Rally is cool enough for me:D

Speaking of Delphi, is that where the rally is going to be hosted this year?

Additionally, to anyone who has been to this rally: Is it better to view this rally with a tour group or on an individual basis?
MK19 12-14-2003 11:10 PM

Individual was how my dad and I did it- we went ripping all over. It was a great time.
Jon Bogert 12-14-2003 11:57 PM

Rally is HQed in Kamena Vourla this year with service in Lamia, but we couldn't get a room there. Apparently the organizers/teams book the whole town. We have a room in Delphi, at the Xenia, but confirmations are a bit... vague. I hope some guy with a wad of Euros doesn't steal our room...

Anyway, Daphne (and with a name like Daphne you know where she's from) and I are looking to do the rally and do the sightseeing too. Delphi should be a good base for that.

John, was a "normal" rental car adequate for the roads, or is something more rugged a good idea?

If any of you are in a 50 mile radius, I'd love to buy you a drink (and not a retsina, either)! John especially. Daphne lurks here and she says, "That johnfelstead guy seems quite bright, especially about differentials." Well, duh! :D
boothwrx 12-15-2003 12:08 AM

If anyone needs any info on the rally or on Greece let me know. I went to the rally last year and plan on going again this year. It is only a 1.5 hour drive from my house so I can find info pretty easily. As far as rental cars go just about anything should be adequate. I have a nissan minivan that does fine.

Hello Daphne. :D

Delphi was very quiet this year, it's perfect if you want to get some quiet nights in a restaraunt with the other half, food is pretty good and cheap. The drive back every night makes the trip worthwhile, its a hell of a run up there. We had an unoficail hillclimb championship going.

there are some clubs in delphi, but they are tiny, the only night we went in one was when the American students were let loose, that was a laugh. :D

Roads are actually in fantastic condition, you wont have any problems with a normal hire car. If you fancy doing some real off road, get in the back way driving then a 4x4 may help, but we managed fine with a Pug307. We drove all the stages in that thing prior to the event, to recee the good spots and find the back way into the stages. Only thing that went wrong was the handbrake cable kept falling off, but we wernt exactly hanging about on stage. If you get there early enough, drive the stages, they are all open until just before the rally starts, just avoid them when the teams are receeing.

If you want any help with maps or general info on the rally, help with accomodation etc then drop my pal Alister a mail, he runs a rally tour company. http://www.ultimaterallyworld.com/index2.html
Jon Bogert 05-25-2004 09:57 AM

Bump. Leaving Friday. Found a room in Kammena Vourla instead of Delphi.

I got a moderate hookup with Ford through work contacts, so at least we'll know where to have lunch. :)
eastbaysubaru 05-25-2004 12:31 PM

I attended the Acropolis rally in 2000. It was a blast, but since then the rally has changed dramatically. They no longer have the ceremonial start at the Acropolis which is good and bad. The good is that you no longer have to drive two hours to get to the stages after watching the start (which was a cool thing in and of itself). The bad is that you don't get to see the cars go over the start ramp at the foot of the Acropolis.

Some of the better pics I took are at my website, just click the www button at the bottom of this post. It's under Rally Pics.

As for rental cars, just get the base model with a 5 speed. It'll be plenty fun pounding on that for a few days :D I don't think you'll need anything more rugged, as we did some dirt/gravel driving in our Opel Corsa and it handled fine. (Note: handbrakes on cheap cars are only connected to one rear wheel)

I can't help too much with hotels, because we stayed in Athens the entire time.

I will add one more piece of advice, bring plenty of water out to the stages. You may find yourself hiking a good deal to get to the stages and it gets hot as hell in Greece in the summer.

Thanks, Brian. Ya know--I just got one of those hats...
boothwrx 05-25-2004 10:44 PM

The weather is kind of cool for this time of year. I hope it stays like this for the next couple of weeks. I think it got to a high of around 80 here yesterday. I live in a valley that tends to be one of the hotter parts of Greece. This time last year it was 90+. As far as rental cars go, if my Nissan Quest minivan can handle the stages, anything can.
daphne 05-26-2004 10:18 PM

So I take it Mr Felstead will not be attending Acropolis?

boothwrx, are you planning on making the trip down from Larissa?

That is the plan as long as nothing changes. The wife wanted to go San Torini the same weekend as the rally, but I think I stopped that nonsense. Now I have to go on some island hopping cruise in July. The rally should be a go unless something else comes up. I don't know how many/which days I will go. It is a rather easy 1.5-2 hour drive staight down the highway from Larissa to Lamia. I will have to go by myself this year as all of my friends will be out of the country, just hope I don't get lost. The Greek phrase book will be my friend.
johnfelstead 05-30-2004 05:44 PM

Not this year. :)
whoobaru 06-02-2004 11:46 AM

Goin' this Friday! Only for the day though, since I've got plans for Mykonos on the weekend. When I get back I'll see if I can put pictures up. 1st time in Greece and it's awesome! The roads are incredible and people really do know how to drive here.

Where are you at that they know how to drive? Come to Larissa, you can make your own traffic laws! Traffic lights, stop signs, speed limits, and lane markings are optional.

Sooo TRUE!

Got to see stage 6 Eleftherohori up close today! It was awesome! I've got a taste for it now and I don't mean the dust! I was gonna try to see Stromi 1 & 2 but I met some cool Greek guys and they said it wasn't so good for viewing. I've got a few pics, but the dust was getting everywhere and I was missing the action trying to take them. I'll post them when I get back home. Even with the decrease in factory cars, it's still worth it to go! Greece is just awesome overall!
eastbaysubaru 06-06-2004 03:36 AM

Seriously! It's so funny to see a four lane road become five lanes during rush hour traffic. It was a little crazy at first, but you get used to it quickly:devil:

Best driving moment of the trip...passing a cop doing about 110 mph while another car was passing the cop between the two of us at about 130+. The cop didn't even bat an eye:lol:

i can guarantee you, even if he pulled you over, nothing would happen. he'd look at your crap for about a minute and see you're an american and send you on your way to drive off the next blind corner. i've been taking advantage of this for the past 3 years. (as long as i've been able to drive, only 18 years old) my dad, who's a greek national plays the same card too. we have a rav4 w/ louisiana plates over there and nobody gives a **** what we do.

Guys, I've never been to a rally before but I'm going to have extra time in Greece all day this year on the 25th, can anyone help me in planning on how to get the most out of this day? Do rally packages do just one day of touring?
johnfelstead 02-06-2005 08:22 PM

if you send my pal alister a mail i am sure he could help you out, even on info for just one day. http://www.ultimaterallyworld.com/

I did send him an email, Thanks John. I forgot to tell him that you told me though, sorry :o
