Anyone removed underhood insulation?

I have heard that its purpose is to kill the fire and to reduce the engine sound level. Anyone has actually removed one and what's your impression?
Thanks in advance

I'm just curious: why would you remove it? Weight savings would be minimal, and yes, it is there for a reason.

It also helps the paint not get to heat damaged as well. If you took it off I bet you would get paint fade or bubbling in this spot.

I took mine off and drove like that for about a year with no problems at all. I've since upgraded to a carbon fiber hood and it doesn't come with the insulation.

i think its more of a sound deadening material than heat...i have
no plans to take that material off though.

unless the hood came with instructions not to install the insulation, you probably should put it back.. I know wheny my hood was replaced they installed new insulation.

It serves a few purposes. First is sound insulation. 2nd is fire supression. I case of an engine fire the plastic clips holding it into place will melt allowing the "fire blanket" to drop and hopefully smother the fire.....

So...if you wanted a louder sound you could remove the insulation? Even though it wouldn't be wise to do that...

I took mine off because I had installed an AVO catch can and two of the hoses were rubbing against the insulator. No negatives so far. I want to put it back though but after I reroute them hoses. Or I want to insulate under the hood with some heat deflective material, similar to the turbo insulator/blanket.

I removed it about 50,000 miles ago mainly because i enjoy the sound of the engine. I have had no issues at all. A while ago in a post just like this one, someone metioned the paint protection issue. Another member quickly pointed out that the entire engine bay is painted and it isn't flakeing or bubbleing off. Even the underside of my hood still looks mint.

I removed my insulation last year before shipping my WRX to the Caribbean. Haven't had any problems and I recommend it for heat dissipation, in a hot climate you want as much heat to dissipate through the hood as possible.
Using an upholstery removal tool to pull out the plastic tabs, it takes about 10 seconds to remove the whole thing.

I removed mine over a year ago, no problems at all. I do however carry a fire extinguisher in the car just in case.

In my brief time as a car salesman I learned how to do a walk around when showing a car to someone. One of the things I learned about cars was that the "fire blanket" is not a fire blanket. It is for sound insulation. If any of you have ever seen a car fire, you know that a bit of insulation will not do anything to stop a car fire. We were taught this so that we didn't get sued if someones car caught on fire.

I took mine off and you can hear Mr. Turbo spool up way louder from in the car my friends were like ohhhh niiicee

i took mine off when i first got the car (it was falling apart) and in fact the turbo area of the hood stayed cooler with it off than with it on, now that im boosting more out of the turbo it's hotter but otherwise there were no negative effect from doing this, and that was a year and a half ago now
idk why people think its there for fire insulation, i burned mine to test it and it burned like a piece of paper....it's all for sound and it doesn't make a huge difference either way

Yeah they told you not to say that because they wanted to cover their asses if they sold a car that had a fire and didnt get put out by the "fire blanket". The "fire blanket" doesn't cover the whole engine bay, so if it caught fire where it's not covered, than the customer can't complain to the place they bought it from (if you dont tell them the purpose of the "fire blanket"). Just a possibility.

i wouldn't take mine off, why? no reason, also it is designed to fall down during an engine fire and put that out, instead of your whole car turning into a fireplace

Mine get's soaked with salty road water from living in lovely new england. I'm thinking about ditching it as well.

The sound deadening insulation is almost Always the first thing to go on any of my rides when first going thru them. There is NO worrie of paint bubbling (that's hilarious). Engine sound/tone (noise to others) is increased which I like and more heat is disapated. Also makes it easier to spray the bay and hood down ( no more leaking dusty/grimy water dripping out from the insulation after you just cleaned it)

Aside from the nearly 9 year old thread bump, you guys REALLY think it will suppress a fire? Go light one on fire, burns pretty quick. These do nothing for fires, and in the case of a fire it doesn't turn to a magical "goo" to put it out. It's only for SOUND DEADENING.

I removed mine as the clips were interfering with my intake box (taller), although I will probably put it back on eventually. It absolutely does do something as far as noise dampening, I've noticed a little more/raspier motor noise since removing it.
(And for posterity, the sound is nothing special so don't get your hopes up kids, might as well leave it in place)

I just took mine of as a test after reading this. Nothing official but it seems that when Im sitting in traffic the intake air temp rises slower than before.
