ATTENTION Subaru owners...Replace your Hepa Filter!! part 1

ATTENTION Subaru owners...Replace your Hepa Filter!!
Remember to replace your hepa filter in your subaru every 10,000 miles or so. I just had mine replaced at the factory but their installation price was ridiculous ($100 just for install, $45 for filter). Wondering if anyone knows where else to purchase the hepa filters. It makes a huge difference driving with purified and filtered, clean air. I'm not sure what Subaru's include the hepa filtration system but I know my 05 STi does. Talk it up guys!!
turbo tecnica 05-13-2006 07:57 PM

Are you talking about the cabin air filter?
WRXDriftR 05-14-2006 08:31 AM

ummm..it only takes 15 minutes and a screw driver to replace it. why would you pay them a hundred bucks?!
Subie Gal 05-14-2006 08:45 AM

labor.

probably pays 1 hour in the books to change the filter

most shop rates are $90-100 now... so there ya go.

you can find them on line for less.
install yourself for free in a few minutes.

First Rule of Car Ownership, you don't go to the dealer unless it's warranty work.
Second Rule of Car Ownership, YOU DON'T GO TO THE DEALER UNLESS IT'S FOR WARRANTY WORK!

(sorry SubieGal) :)

Once again, it pays to check here on NASIOC first. I feel bad for you being ripped off.

Also, it's a standard overpriced crappy-fitting paper cabin air filter, not a hepa filter. I know some people have been purchasing regular house air filters at Home Despotic, and cutting them to fit for like half the price. Do a search.

Also, I know Bosch makes Cabin Air Filters but I've never been able to find one for the Impreza. Does anyone know if they make one or one that might be close to fitting?

ScoobyNubieToo! 05-14-2006 10:56 AM

Does every WRX come with them or is it only an option?
Does every WRX come with them or is it only an option?
hmmmm
i think 2002 - - newer come with them from the factory
but i'm not 100% on that.

i work for a dealership, but dont get me wrong
and I am all for learning to maintain your car yourself! :)

vehicle knowledge is a good thing!

Hondaslayer 05-14-2006 11:23 AM

Jamie, the cabin filter is optional across the impreza line (not sure about the OBS SE) as well as Foresters. I think some Legacy models are coming with them standard but I am not sure.
Kenji815 05-14-2006 12:12 PM

what's the part number for the 05 carbin air filter? or waht alternative filter is there?
Mulder 05-14-2006 12:19 PM

It is NOT a HEPA filter, and you do not have to buy the OEM one or pay the dealer to change it. It's a simple DIY to both make and install yourself. There is an old thread on how to do this, I will go find it.
edit- here it is-

AFAIK Bosch does not yet make an aftermarket replacement.
hybrid gti 2 05-14-2006 12:33 PM

does 02 have one?
Synx 05-14-2006 12:34 PM

Yo, dis, yup theres a spot to put on in, but iirc it was an option when purchaseing the car. So unless you put one in yourself i doubt you've got one in there.

Btw, pm me how lifes going for ya, haven't talked in a while.
GLwagon 05-14-2006 12:52 PM

Something something furnace filter cut up & put in something...
pingpong 05-14-2006 01:02 PM

My 04 rex didn't come with one, but I got one for employee discount, pulled out my glovebox and installed myself. Very easy.
littlewhitewagon 05-14-2006 01:47 PM

The 06 wrx models come with them standard. If you have one fit from the factory, you will have a sticker in the drivers door jamb telling you to replace it ofen.
Dr freedom 05-14-2006 08:02 PM

Here, they didnt fit them in via the factory in all models until the 01.
The models prior to 01, have a space for it though. I paid (Aussie $70) for one & they charge $40 to fit it.. I said "no thanks" to the fitting offer.

Do it yourself.
whpotter 05-16-2006 12:32 AM

I went the DIY route with my '03 WRX last year. No problems.

FYI, I also have a 2000 Legacy GT that I changed the filter in tonight. Apparently the previous owner and the shops he used never changed it. It was almost black and clogged with bugs, leaves and dust. This filter is two-piece design with the pieces stacked vertically. They are about 2" thick and come in elaborate plastic cages, the bottom one with a standoff for a resistor. No DIY here.
ejh25 07-22-2006 12:28 PM

Just did this mod. Real real real easy....less than ten minutes.
IIdiceII 07-22-2006 12:33 PM

Im afriad to look and see if I have one.

if I do, i bet its never been replaced...70k miles
WRXbluJ 07-22-2006 05:22 PM

I figured I would check mine and it was pretty nasty. Soap and water to clean it (after banging the bugs/leaves/etc out) and it is sitting in the sun drying right now. It will be OK until I can get a replacement.
Doobie Scoo 07-22-2006 05:29 PM
does 02 have one?
It is a dealer option so you may not have the filter, However you DO have the filter box behind your glove box. So you can put one in.
gopsu 07-22-2006 06:15 PM

I just replaced one on my wife's car w/ 30k miles. It was full of dust and particles. :(
SinisterSkube 07-22-2006 07:07 PM

STi-JDM 07-22-2006 10:01 PM

txl146 07-23-2006 11:04 AM

arod87, item you listed above is intake air filter not cabin filter. Cabin filter is located right behind glove box. You can get one from any of automotive store for around $20-30. It takes about 15-20 min to replace one.
dankster 07-23-2006 11:26 AM

If the filter gets clogged and the windows are up will I run out of air and die?
