Bad idea for center arm rest
hey, iv been thining about getting some black suade, spray adhesive and covering my arm rest. is this gonna work or will it look like crap after a month?
silver-RS 09-27-2006 12:47 PM

its pretty hard to make it look decent around the curve
unless u have the skills otherwise i will say it will probably look cheap
skate enjoi 09-27-2006 12:54 PM

if you use a thin material and spray the adhesive and let it dry it should work... if you do it right the first time without any wrinkles and stuff it should stay, especially if its a thinner material
rubrduk 09-27-2006 08:03 PM

why not have it cut/stitched and then glue it
06STIGO13 09-27-2006 08:33 PM

Why not get yourself a pimp 80's Cadillac and try it on that... I don't think suede and Subaru go together!
elsanto 09-28-2006 09:58 AM

I'd think it wouldnt wear too hot in that area.. i know my plastic cover is wearing.. id think suede would wear right through in little time.

are u kidding, sti seats r sueade type matterial, and u broke then bank for leather, tell my to buy a cadillac :furious:
skate enjoi 09-28-2006 11:09 AM

i think it would look good if you did it right, make a pattern and have it stitched, that would look the best....
Pianolady 09-28-2006 01:32 PM

Cut and stitched looks good, might be just as easy to buy a cover though if you aren't experienced with sewing. I DIY'd my armest extension cover, and it was difficult getting the sides the right shape without a pattern. You must make a pattern for any chance of making it look good. I'd try the suede, worse that would happen is you'd have to do it again if it wears badly. Spray adhesive would probably work better than my superglue did. I put mine right over the old cover instead of removing.

Alcantara is the blue fabric found in the STI's. It is a suade-like material and great for keeping the driver planted. It is used in a variety of sports cars. It was also heavily used in the SVX as an accent material, along with leather seats. If anything, leather is a material that doesn't belong in a WRX or STI. In a Legacy... sure!
Golfa 11-17-2006 02:44 PM

^^the fabric in STi's is actually escaine not alcantara, but same difference :P
STi-JDM 11-17-2006 03:10 PM

do you mean the whole armrest or just the top cover? if it just the top cover/lid, why don't you just buy one from redlinegoods.com ... :D
DrD 11-17-2006 07:28 PM

www.redlinegoods.com - they can make them out of an alcantara like material (which looks/feels like suede) - you can find them in the vendors for sale forum, too (they usually have a discount code going)

Covering the arm rest was the easy part of the interior coving same with the glove box any part that you can take apart and clamp the material down when reassembled.

Subaru.com and Subaru.ca both state:

-STI-design front seats with fixed integrated head restraints and embroidered STI logos
-Alcantara upholstery

That looks great. I bought some genuine Alcantara from ebay, and have managed to replace the gear and e-brake gaiter with it, and now want to do the armrest cover.

I had thought I would have to stitch 3 pieces together - the way spy has above - but yours looks like it is one piece? Could you give us a quick how-to, does the Alcantara stretch enough to do this without a folds in the corner curves??

Pictures of that dash would be cool too, it looks excellent!
imma_stocker 11-21-2006 01:28 PM

It looks to me like the armrest extension needs to be a 3-piece while the regular armrest can be done in 1-piece. If someone doesn't know later on, the armrest extension is the added piece on top of the regular armrest making it taller and giving it an additional compartment.
