Best way to fix dented WRX hood?

I know it's made of alumnium and could be costly to repair. Shop quoted me $470 for a repair. It's about 3" in length and minor dent, which probably can be pulled out by using vacuum or etc. Dent is more visible when light reflects it.
Are there any repair kit available that can be used safely to pull it out? there is no paint damage.

Why don't you just get a new hood? I would assume it's not that too much more than what they quoted you?

Don't try to fix it yourself, you will only make it worse. Find a local paintless dent repair professional and have them look at it, they may be able to fix it for less than what you were quoted.

470 for a repair is insane. List for the hood is just over $400. Of course that is unpainted.
Definately check out a paintless dent repair place. They can do amazing work in seconds sometimes.

The hood is $583.32 unpainted.
That still sounds like a high estimatefor repair.

I shouldn't have said list. I meant you can buy the hood for just over $400.
The bodyshop where my car is getting repaired at ordered the hood (no hardware) for $405.56, and that's from the local dealership.

If it was me, I would be looking into Carbon Fiber hoods. Cheaper, looks better, and you dont have to paint it!

You don't gain anything by putting it on a WRX, therefore, it's just a "looks fast" item.

What's the weight difference in stock vs. carbon fiber?
| mafiamotorsports | 09-13-2004 01:23 PM |
there would be a definite gain due the the weight difference.CF weighs much less than stock.although IMO it doesnt look as nice as stock but you will have your gains due to weight reduction. But as far as rice.Everyone loves to throw that word around,And considering the car comes from japan and a lot of the stuff they put on over there for performance and visual mods most people here would call rice.now if someone was slapping a cf hood on a benz i could see yelling rice. But come on its a subaru the car has rally and street racing roots. The whole car is rice lol.so deal with it.
| ydant | 09-13-2004 01:25 PM |
The difference in weight between the stock aluminium hood and the CF hood would be minor. The stock hood is pretty light already (on WRX/STi). If the hood's crappily made it's even possible for it to be heavier than the stock hood...
| mafiamotorsports | 09-13-2004 01:27 PM |
lol well you always get what you pay for.but most people wont drop the cash on a REAL cf hood.
| jaypine | 09-13-2004 01:30 PM |
If it offers any performance gain, then it's really not rice, particularily if it is nearly as cheap as replacing the dented one.
| mafiamotorsports | 09-13-2004 01:40 PM |
thats what im saying, usually the ones yelling rice are some old tree huggin hippies that should have gotten the the vw or the benz to begin with.they really werent looking to modify it or race it. :D

I am replacing my hood (and trunk) with a CF after much deliberation. After extensive hail damage, replacement of my hood is nearly a grand (parts, paint, labor). I think I can buy a decent CF hood for that. A little weight savings (a lot on the trunk), cool look, etc. are all fine by me. Plus less chance of hail and minor dents.
I don't think I would pay for one if I had a pefectly good aluminum hood already, but if its at no cost, why not?

yeah man go for it.Post some pics to.we need to see the other side of the spectrum. All i ever see pics of anymore are the stock cars that are all shined and polished.I wanna see some "RICE" LOL

What are $1,000 CF hoods made of? It seems like a sheet of CF that big would cost way more than that.
| mafiamotorsports | 09-13-2004 03:55 PM |
It does usually but there are some cheapo's out there.

I have a 2.5RS and my stock hood weighs WAAAYYYY more than you WRX/STi guys' stock hoods. I got a nice VIS carbon fiber hood for $600 brand new. There was a HUGE weight difference. But on a WRX, the only reason I see for a carbon fiber hood is looks because the stock WRX/STi hood is light as hell compared to a 2.5RS.
I have my stock hood scoop on my carbon fiber hood so that weighs it down some but I compared my carbon fiber hood to my friends WRX stock hood and he was still lighter than me by a little........

Aaa i hate that guy...And its just a joke that thing prolly sucks...Good choice with the CF..It looks nice(depending on teh color of your car)..And if your spendin the money u might as well get it..
And enough with the friggon rice...If teh cars fast who cares...It can have lambo doors, graphics, crappy headlights, huge wings, all that crap, but when it kicks your a55 in a race then its not rice...Who cares, someone wants to make there car LOOK nicer...God forbid it isnt performance enhancing..I am FOR go before show...But if someone just wants to throw some minor things on THEIR car for THEIR own satisfaction then just leave em alone...

| mafiamotorsports | 09-14-2004 01:17 AM |
thats what sticks to the dent to pull it out.I have seen one of those used it pretty funny.and it doesnt work at all.that hot glue doesnt stick to metal well enough to pull anything.

My RS is very "RICE" and I love it. I got an autometer tack on the dash, carbon fiber hood, in dash dvd player, body kit, etc...... All the perfect RICE mods!

I'll get one for the durability. What's the point in getting a new aluiminum hood when you'll get rock dings in a few months anyway?
