Broken compass on rear view mirror

Anyone out there with the auto dimming mirror have a problem with the digital compass? Mine only says S and SW no matter what direction I'm travelling in. My car is 3 1/2 years old with 33K miles. I have the extended warrenty with $100 deductable, but a new mirror is like $150. I realized how much I actually use that thing now that its busted.

Dizzy,
Have you tried calibrating it? Try that first. .......your manual has step by step instructions.

Yep run the calibration procedure in the manual, that should fix it. They do occasionally get "stuck" and require recalibration.

We moved from New Orleans to Houston & had to re-calibrate our compass. We didn't realize it was wrong until after getting thouroughly lost in Austin,TX and argueing over whether or not the co-driver (me!) could read a map. <grin> I hope you didn't get lost, Dizzy. We RTFM-ed, re-calibrated it, and it was fine until recently. Though sometimes it's hard to find an open area in the city with no interference.
Our 2002 WRX SW has about 75K miles. Now the whole mirror unit is broken. It doesn't auto dim & the whole thing looks fuzzy like it is fogged up inside. And the compass just kind of goes its own way. We didn't realize how much we depend on the compass either. Anybody got a recommendation on the best place (cheaper than the dealer!) to buy a replacement before we get lost again?

pav - get quotes from some of the online *discount* Subaru parts dealers that sponsor this site (such as subarugenuineparts.com).

If the unit is actually shot, look around online for the Gentex or Donnelly autodim mirrors. Donnelly is actually the supplier of the OEM Subaru mirrors, but either type will fit as long as you get the cam-lock mount. However if you get a Donnelly the connector should be the same as your existing one so it would be easier to install (unless it has additional features which require added wiring).
The aftermarket mirrors can be had with outside temp display and/or map lights in addition to the compass.

Just curious...
Do y'all know how the auto-dim feature works? Is it LCD based? Ours looks like it has an internal crack at the very bottom where the mirror below the crack is clear. I've seen something similar in an old LCD watch display.

my compass is defintiely busted.
it'll show only N, NE and NW. it doesn't care if i am facing due south, it just doesn't seem to get it.

Mine started doing this after about three years. The clear part will just keep growing till there is no more tint which is where mine finally is now. It was pretty irritating when it got to about half but I just left it and now don't really notice it's gone.

i simply cannot stand having something NOT work.
poked around a little and thought about buying the Magna Donnelly #36401, but they're too pricey for me at $250. :(

My mirror on my 04 sti broke the day i put in my stereo. Only 3 JL 10inch subs. Pissed me off cuz there is no digital rear view mirrors that can handle subs. It was a daily driver not a race car, so subwoofers were necessary. :)

Same thing just happened to me. How do we fix this?
I was thinking of cracking it open and seeing what might have happened. The whole process started after a few REALLY hot days. I figured the heat was pulling some adhesive backing away something something...I have no idea.

You can't fix it, the barrier between the layers inside the mirror has probably separated. Open it up and you will have goo all over and a still-broken mirror. No choice but to replace it.

For the guys whose compasses only show southerly directions...it's obvious what the problem is. You're at the magnetic north pole. Drive away from the pole and voila!

Mine has the half and half dimming.....AND....my compass is stuck on SW.
I also dont have a manual to do the compass reset. Can anyone just post up the step by steps or point us in the direction of online info?

[QUOTE] Restoring compass accuracy is a simple two-step process.
1. Set ZONE:
a) The ZONE number is factory preset to ZONE 8. Refer to Compass ZONE Map to verify what compass ZONE setting is correct for your geographical location.
b) To change the compass ZONE setting, press and hold the button to the right of the display for approximately 3 seconds until the word ZONE is visible in the display, then release the button. When the button is released, the display will show ZONE and the current ZONE number. Press the right-hand button repeatedly to cycle the display through all possible ZONE numbers (1-15). Stop cycling when the display shows the correct ZONE number for your geographical location.
c) After approximately 3 seconds of inactivity, the compass display will return to normal operation and the new ZONE number will be set.
2. Calibrate the Compass:
a) Drive to an open, level area away from large metallic objects or structures.
b) For optimum results, switch off all nonessential electrical accessories (A/C, blower, wipers, defrost, etc.) and close all doors.
c) Press and hold the left button for approximately 3 seconds until the word CAL is visible in the display, then release the button. This puts the compass into Calibration mode. CAL and a direction will be displayed.
d) Drive slowly in a circle (about two or three times) until CAL disappears from the display and then verify compass accuracy.

well, screw me!!!!
i thought i was calibrating it while all i was doing was setting the zone. i'll ahve to look in th emanual to see if there's mention of calibrating. not to displace balme or anything, but it was my wife who read the manual, and gave me instrcutions while we were driving.
took a few rounds in the parking lot at lunch, and my world is a little more complete now. thanks, guys!

Bringing the thread back from the dead...
When I press and hold either button, nothing happens. Am I missing something or is it borked?

bringing the thread back from the dead again....
the compass on my auto-dimming mirror is no longer as bright green as it used to be. It's really dim, and feel like its gonna go out any moment. it reminds of old calculators, how the display would fade when the battery was about to die, until eventually it no longer displays characters.
anyone have same issue? is it as easy as taking it apart and replacing a bulb?
