Can't decide on tint percentage, help!
How dark is too dark?
How light is too light?
I'm leaning more towards the dark side right now, and have a good shop that will do less-than-legal tint if I decide to go that route.
Anyone have any pics of their cars with a tint percentage? I was thinking maybe 20%, as I'm not sure if I can live with 5%.
Thanks.

From what I have heard from many people, 20% is as dark as one should go. Any darker and it becomes harder to see...
As is 20% can be hard to see out of at night (on really dismal, rainy nights), but 20% also looks sweet...
I personally am going to do 35% all around to stay legal and still look pretty good...

Don't believe the hype. I've got 5% (limo black) on the rear windows of my (soon to be someone else's) Civic and it's just fine. Had it that way for 7 years no problems. Daytime visibility is great, obviously. Don't worry about not seeing out of them at night.
Remember, it'll be more dark INSIDE the car, so therefore, easier to see than if it were bright inside. If you don't believe this, try looking out your UNtinted house windows at night. Looking from light to dark is almost impossible. Then go outside, leaving the house lights on, and look inside. You'll never walk around in your skivvies again!:D The only time I've even had questionable visibility is backing up in unfamiliar, tight quarters in COMPLETE darkness. Even then, just pay attention before you get into the car to assess your route and you're fine.
If you are tinting them for heat rejection, go as dark as humanly (legally) possible. The lighter tints don't to jack for summer heat. My previous car had something around 50% (the darkest I could get at the store at the time) and it did NOTHING. If you are getting them just for aesthetics, just poke around in the Member's Gallery and go with what you think looks good.

Thanks for the input. I'm going with a "dark" theme to my visual mods with the rest of the car (CF side markers, bronze wheels, etc) so I think a darker tint will kind of complete the look.
Has anyone ever gotten any police attention from having 5%?

i just got 36% on the back three. I was going to get all 5 done, but i was scared i was going to get pulled over (local sacto police not very..."nice")
Anyway, i think 35% is pretty dark enough for me. Im still getting used to it.
FWIW-get it all around, as in dont just do the backs like i did, i think it looks sleaker with all the windows done the same color.
There are hundreds of pics of window tint, just search for it.
FYI-i think there is someone with 5% ALL AROUND!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
and good luck!

Ok, I've had 20% on my last two cars (including the WRX) and that is honestly the darkest I'd go. It's 1 level darker than legal here (25%), looks dark from the outside, and you can see out of it at night. Even with the 20% you have to get used to the loss of some night visibility. There is a difference, especially if you're driving in a location without street lights, you can't see anything behind or beside you (that's not lit) very well.
With 5%, it'll be rediculously obvious that it's Illegal.
Couple pics:

btw, I got the ONYX black which is a metal film, so it'll never fade like ink tint, and it looks dark from outside, and almost stock from inside.

I agree with what most people said. 20% is the lowest I'd go.
Two weeks after I got my windows tinted, I got pulled over for speeding (AWE YEAH!) and I was freaking out because I thought the cop would say something. I rolled down my driver side window so he wouldn't see but he came around to my passenger side windows with his flashlight blaring into my car. (DOH!)
Anyway...he didn't say a word about my tint. If I had 5%...I'm sure he would.
Also, I do a lot of backing up because I live in a tight spot and I have to manuver to get my car out of my garage. I have to say that 20% is pretty hard to see out of at night. I sometimes have to roll my windows down just to see what's behind me.
Don't get 5%. Might as well paint your windows black and never use them again. ;o)
Have you considered getting reflective tint (mirror tint)? I got that on my car and it looks great.

20% is perfect for day and night driving.
But keep in mind what is legal.
I got hit with a $100 ticket and the second offense is $200 and so forth.
thats why I now have 50% I had 20%

Limo all the way around
I've got limo tint all they way around on my silver WRX and I think it looks great.
To me it makes the windows look like a seamless piece of glass. which gives a "clean" affect.
I personally don't like when tint is different shades from front to back. If your not going dark at least get it all the same shade.
As for the darkness at first I will admit you get a mean case of tunnel vison if your not used to it, but you get used to it and being in So Cal it really protects from the summer heat. Backing up is a little tricky to start out with but it's easy to get used to. As for the police I haven't had a problem at all. I've been stopped at a light with a bike cop in the next lane and he even looked over and checked out my car but he didn't do a thing about the tint. in the end I say go with what you thinks looks best

I have limo 5% on the rear windows and 20% on the front window and havn't been pulled over. The legal limit for front is supposed to be 35% but I have had good luck running 20% with this car and my previous trucks. I think its because cops can tell you have 2 shades of tint and they know the front isnt limo if its a little lighter.

I got 35% Llumar tint all around. Looks really nice. Dark, but still not too dark. Great outward visibility. I've gotten pulled over twice for speeding since I got my car :(, but not once for the tint. :D

wow, nice tints... im personally going with onyx 20% in back and 35% up front, the darkness of the rear should make the tint up front less noticable to a cop... i was thinking of doing 35/50 but its just not ass clean looking as the darker tints
| sdseagles | 08-30-2002 07:49 AM |
15% is perfect. 5% is too dark. You can check out mine if you'd like.

I think it really comes down to personal preference. I had 5% on my truck and I will never go that dark again. I loved it during the day and it did look really nice, but it was really hard to see out of at night. I would usually have to open my door and stick my head out to see where I was backing up unless I was right under a street light. Even turning at intersections was difficult sometimes b/c the door windows were so dark I couldn't tell where I was going.
I used to do the same thing as Pakman916, got pulled over twice and rolled down my windows ASAP so it didn't look as bad. Never did get a ticket though.
Maybe I just don't have good night vision, I don't know. I will say that the tinting minimized the mess I had to clean up when someone broke into my truck. The window shattered, but the tint held it all together except for the hole they reached through to unlock the door.
:monkey: <[email protected] holes who broke into my truck
I got 20/25% (can't remember which) on my WRX and I think it is perfect. Looks good and I have not had any probs at night either.

I have the wagon and the tint laws are a bit different vs sedan in WA State. You can go as dark at 5% (limo tint) on the rear sides, cargo area, and back. You are only suppose to go 35% on the front sides but I went 20% because I didn't want too much of a contrast to the 5%. Here are a couple of pics. BTW, the visibility at night w/the 5% is not too bad.... a lot less of a problem than I thought it would be. Oh yeah, I have 20% front sides, 5% on rear sides, cargo area, and back window. No troubles w/the "officiales" ;)

15% is great. 20% is not dark enough. 5% and you will look like a pimp and it will draw cops to your car. If you want to stay legal do 15% in the back and legal tint in the front. That looks good also.
| SleepinRex | 08-30-2002 01:07 PM |
Well, being that i live in California were it seems that we are limited in everything we do, tinting the front two windows is "illegal". I'm not really a fan of having two different tints on the same car. Maybe its just me but i dont really like the look of having the back windows darder than the front. I basically just said screw the law and i wet with 30% all around. Oh and i think you probably wouldnt want to go any darker than 20%, I know a guy who has 15% all around and thats a pain to see out of at night.
| BlkRexWagon | 08-30-2002 01:12 PM |
Again, it's all opinion but... I have 35% (legal) on my black wagon and am very happy with it.
If getting pulled over was no issue, I would go with a 15% - 20%. I think the 20 would look a bit better, but darker than that and it gets tough to back up at night.
Here's a couple of pics (not great, but hope they'll help):

BTW, aren't the tint laws in Florida pretty lenient? I noticed you live in Florida. I feel sorry for people who live in VA. They pretty much can't do JACK and the fuzz are jerks. Thank goodness I moved to Seattle.
I think it also depends on the color car you have and what kind of look you are going for. 5% is pimp! Anything lower than 35% is not worth the money. (lower meaing 35% - 100%).
I got a black wagon, (which I regret because the paint swirls and the dirt is so easy to see), but if I could do it all over again, I'd get a silver wagon and get the mirror tint that comes on the Lexus RX300/or the nissan pathfinders.
Instead, as I mentioned, I got the reflective 20% tint. The car looks killer when it's washed and waxed. And the only way you can see into my car is when you put your face up to my window and hold your hands up to block out the light. From far away, all you see are the buildings and clouds reflecting off my tint. Some days the tint is not as reflective (caused by lighting conditions) and still, you can only see silhouettes.
But to each his own. I personally wouldn't want to drive around with 5% at night. I can't use the autodimming fuction on my rearview mirror because my rear tint is already dark enough at 20%. When I turn the autodim on, I can only see headlights but I can't make out what type of car is behind me. (Gotta keep an eye out for 5-0.) I can't see crap. Need to eat more carrots.

Hi,
I'm new here, but I just got my car back from the tinters a couple of days ago with a 35% Mirror tint on my silver WRX...It looks sweet...I really recommend it for others with silver cars...
But now the car is in the garage hiding from all the NY police who will probably pull me over in a second. :D
