Carbon Fiber Dash Kit?? part 1

WolfDrive 02-28-2004 03:05 AM

Carbon Fiber Dash Kit??
Okay, I am pretty well convinced that the factory dash kit is no good... being faked as carbon fiber any way.... so my question is this....

I had Superior Dash's CF Kit in my '99 Cougar, and it was awesome, looked great, very well made... Does anyone have it in their Subaru?

Also I am looking at a place called AAA Exotic Wood, Inc. Which seems a bit more shady at about half the price of the Superior Dash kit.... anyone have a kit from these guys in Carbon Fiber? Is it real Carbon Fiber? is it well made?

Any word on these guys would be a big help, or maybe you can even point me in a better direction. Thanks!

I'm pretty sure they carry real CF for up to 2004 imprezas. They also have colored plastic and brushed aluminum.

somone needs to make a full, replacement c/f interior kit in gloss and / or flat c/f.

just like the subaru kit only in REAL c/f.

These aren't the overpriced cheapy Subaru stick on pieces.
They look like high quality pieces. Full replacement parts.
I should get my status bumped up to Scooby Specialist for finding this.:)

Do you currently have the OEM CF trim?

I switched over to the OEM CF trim last spring. I researched the current options for about 4 months before going that router.

Biggest problem with aftermarket kits is fitment. The Subaru trim may not be real, but it has a finished CF look with perfect fitment.

Um... Hate to break it to you... But that's just the OEM carbon trim. It's not real carbon fiber, just painted to simulate it.

what's oem carbon trim?
The oem option is the stick-ons. At least that was my impression.

The OEM carbon fiber option are the pieces that you provided the link to. They're just the stock pieces painted with a carbon fiber pattern instead of silver/grey. The aftermarket carbon fiber kits are the overlays.

I've been on the look out for eight months and still have not found a real carbon fiber kit. I've found lots of fake garbage but nothing real.

Just make your own dash kit. Since this pictures was taken the entire center stereo section has been wrapped in carbon.

No the installers at Polk Audio did that car. It takes some practice, but you can do it yourself with a little time. I just finshed wraping my door panels, and it's a bitch, but it looks awesome!

You can see some other pictures of that car, along with the door panels here: http://www.polkaudio.com/car/installs/viewpolk.php?id=19

You'll want to go to this site for all your carbon needs:

Good luck!

I'll snap some shots tomorrow for ya, if I remember.

Is there any walkthroughs online that you know about? I'm fairly handy and think I could figure it out, but gotta start somewhere :D Did you use molds? or were you able to get that nice a finish just overlaying?

Ive been thinking of getting fixed seats for some time now, how well does the stock seat belt work with that kind of seat? I was thinking of eventually getting a sparco corsa or evo II.

What's the process for what? If you're talking about just installing one of these kits, clean off your dash with the supplied alcohol or whatever they give you (which probably isnt enough quantity-wise) and get all the armor all / dust and whatever other crap is on your interior. Take off the double-sided 3M tape and apply. Hold it for at least 30 seconds to make sure it stays on good. Have patience, you don't want a crooked carbon fiber dash or having to put it back on after a month. Unless you were referring to making your own CF molds, which is an entirely different story.
cnk 03-03-2004 01:34 PM

I think he's referring to laying carbon fiber yourself. . .not the stick on stuff. From most of my research, it should be similar to fiberglassing. Lay the carbon down, put epoxy all over it to saturate the material, squeegie (sp?) out the air bubbles. When it's dry, you polish it up. I'm tempted to try it out, but am still doing some more research on the topic.
