Carbon Fiber Hood Imperfections part 1

Carbon Fiber Hood Imperfections
Hi,

I recently bought an '04 STi that came with a Seibon CW Carbon Fiber hood and was wondering if it was normal for there to be imperfections in CF type hoods. There are 5 or 6 quarter size indents and they're really bugging me. I was just wondering if anyone else had the same with their hood?

Thanks,
Scott

I had some on my girlfriends hood so i just blocked them down and recleared the hood it took 2 or 3 times but i got them out.

I suppose the answer lies in which manufactor that hood is from. Also, I am assuming it is really a fiberglass base hood w/ simple carbon fiber overlays and clear coat----that is the norm...
Even w/ these simple overlays, there are always imperfections... in part, because a human is doing the work.
I have seen high-$ dry-carbon fiber and it will have some imperfections.... When you get down to it.. it's about the theory of the whole idea.... Light-weight, better-than-steel, looks good is a given...

Just wait and see someone that tried to install hood-pins and see 3-foot spider-web cracks in the clear-coat.... NOW that is hot.

lightweight... lol. i bet the CF hoods weigh MORE than the STI hood, which is freakin light (as you'd know). but anyway, yea there are always imperfections in hoods... my VIS had a few.. but my kaminari has about.. 1. I'm very happy with it.

For some reason, that actually makes me feel better that imperfections are the norm. Now when someone says "how did you get those dents in your hood," I can say it's because all (or most at least) carbon fiber hoods have them. So which do you guys think is cooler, a CF hood with imperfections or a stock hood?

Thanks guys,
Scott

if i started over... i'd go with my stocker... or if i had the money, i'd paint my kaminari.
MikalsWRX 12-16-2005 10:06 AM

You should ask, what do you guys like better, a CF hood with imperfections or a stocker with rock chips and dings :D I chose the CF
STi-JDM 12-16-2005 12:40 PM

+1 Cf :D
2fas4u 12-16-2005 01:06 PM

yup that is why I wont go CF. I have yet to see one that is perfect. IF they get hit by rocks and chip or crack you are stuck unless you get them recleared....
EcksJay 12-17-2005 03:07 AM

how much does a CF hood weigh?

one day I'll have one...
Mechkiller31st 12-17-2005 03:16 AM

hmm intersting I honestly have to say that after hearing this I had to go outside and look at my Vis Racing CF Hood on my 98 L Wagon. Honestly it looks perfect no dents, no dings, not even a crack... I wonder if im just lucky

my kaminari reverse cowl is absolutely perfect.. and 2nd owner too. withstands the highway driving nicely... then again it's heavier than my old VIS oem style.
20Sti05 12-17-2005 05:55 PM

so what weighs more f or oem sti hood?
CGM_WRX 12-17-2005 06:36 PM

It's a crapshoot. I have seen many CF hoods many from the same manufacture. Some are damn near flawless, some aren't even when from the same manufacture.
Whiplash 12-17-2005 07:20 PM

I love my Seibon hood. :D

Read only if you have some extra time
The biggest problem with any carbon fiber hood is the fact they would be to expensive to make correctly. The correct way to build the hood would require the use of prepreg graphite and epoxy resin and a real tool also produced from epoxy graphite prepgreg. I have built thousands of tools and parts for every racing series from the Nissan and Spice GTP cars to Indycars and now fighter jets. Heat is a real issue and you need a resin that can deal with the high tempatures that our turbo motors create. Because it is so expensive to get expoxy prepregs they use polyester resin that has a real problem with heat and shrinkage. I love how everyone calls Prepreg dry material when in fact is is just the correct ratio of graphite to resin and in fact is not dry at all. By using a prepreg you can get the fiber orientation perfect and have a hood that is much lighter tan stock and if you have a quality tool to produce it from you will have a flawless finish. I am so sorry for rambling on but I have one more comment about the imperfections on the hood. They do add a ton of clear to these hoods to make then smooth but is any of the release that was used to keep the part from sticking was not removed you end of with giant fish eyes in the clear that look like craters.

Yeah, that describes what the dents are in my hood then. No one's ever noticed them but me, but at least that I know it came that way and a lot of other people's hoods are the same. At first, I thought it may have been a defective hood, but it sounds like the majority of carbon fiber hoods are that way.

ok so which weighs less?? OEM Sti or CF??
InfamousDX 12-17-2005 11:43 PM

Jeez... you want that answer... and the answer is... IT DEPENDS ON WHICH CF HOOD you're talking about.

So there are CF hoods that are seriously using polyester resin? That's just nuts. Even a half-assed job of researching CF construction would tell you that the epoxy resins available are superior. Heck, I didnt want to use the polyester resign when I was experimenting with CF for small items, much less a hood.
MartinD 12-18-2005 01:55 AM

Get rid of it, buy a stock hood :)
V8killah91 12-21-2005 11:47 AM

Do you guys think that I could get rid of the indentations if I got it sanded and had another clearcoat sprayed on it? How much do you think that would cost?

Thanks
vtecTHIS 12-21-2005 04:43 PM

i bought my brother a cf SPOON hood for his EG. i figured it'd be flawless for the damn price (1200) but it still had a few imperfections. nothign major though. he also has the spoon spoiler , it was damn near perfect, but our freind got it and his isn't as nice as my brother's. it's all hand layed, so it's a crapshoot for real
MF-DIF 12-21-2005 04:54 PM

My VIS hood is the same way. Just the way CF is.

Weight is not the reason to get a CF hood, although stock weighs less

The real reason for the CF is to look like this

lol how you get a pic of my car???? i love the look of CF but cost wise and comparing hoods i think ill stick with my stock one. i just dont see dropping the cash id spend on a hood which wont make much of a differance. id rather spend it on go fast parts then body parts. kind of like the body kits they make for oh i dont know 2k...nuthing like an extra few pounds to slow you down
