Carbon Fiber Hood or Aluminum?

I have to decide on either. Tell me why. Thanks for your help! I have a 2000 Impreza RS.

It really depends. On some post on some board (not sure if it was on this one or another one), they said that for the current WRX, the aluminum hood and carbon-fiber hood have very similar weights, so when it comes to performance and weight savings, they should be nearly identical.
On the other hand, appearance is another factor. If your car is stock or near-stock looking, you might want to stick with a painted aluminum hood. Unpainted carbon-fiber hoods are typically identified with rice rockets. So if your car has a body kit, whether OEM or some wild-looking JUN kit, take your pick between the two.
But personally, I would get an aluminum hood. I put a carbon-fiber hood on my first car, and it wasn't all that great. Any benefits weren't really noticed, and it started looking funky after a while. Plus when your car gets serviced, mechanics don't know how to close them. (They typically do the thing where they hold the hood about eight inches from being closed then slam it shut--a carbon-fiber hood will just bounce off the latch and not close.)

personal take??
cf is fugly...
cf is cheesy....
cf is not "crash safe"... and my life aint worth a cf hood :)
the RS aluminum hood weighs so little.. it's a great option!
(on my list of things to get down the road)
good luck in your personal decision :)

Why would you get a c/f hood typically?
1 - save weight
2 - aditional air intake or heat vents
3 - looks
1 - since the wrx has a nice and light aluminum hood, you might save a couple pounds tops. Nothing like most cars where hoods can weight excess of 50lbs. If you save 3 lbs, that might equate to 0.000001 sec faster in the 1/4 mile. Then again, if the hood isn't a perfect fit, additional drag might add more time.
2 - If you have a FMIC, well your hood scoop isn't a ton of use anymore. If you're still using a top mount, you have a scoop already. If anything, add an STi scoop. If you want to get rid of some heat, the (GC8???) vents work great and can be added to your current hood.
3 - Well, if you're going to get some crazy design with lots of vents and whatnot, then that's up to you. If you just like the look of a plain c/f hood on a blue/white/silver/red/yellow car... paint your current hood black. People will laugh at you either way.
Sorry, I didn't see your car. Well you get my point. Go with the new Imprezza hood.

Most of my points still apply. Aside from the intercooler ones. Like I said with my last statement, go with aluminum. If you really want a c/f look, paint it. :D

well i like the apperance but the whole safety issue is ... sketchy at best
an aluminum hood will not deform to absorb impact
a cf hood will probably shatter in an collision

OK, I am a n00b on the site, but........
Carbon fibre is prone to fading.
Usually you have to put hood pins through it.
Fitment, quality, weave, etc. are all worries.
Safety is a big concern, as the ever-vivacious SubieGal pointed out.
I *do* think that they look nice on RSs, tho ;) They *do* save a lot of weight from your stock hood.......
Maybe I am just old fashioned and like the strength of metal :p
You could also look at the other thread that it seems like I instigated.

I know on my WRX hood, the paint is prone to chipping. Don't know about the RS. Anyone with a carbon hood have chipping of any sort? I'm sure it's not as noticeable.
| BOFslime | 08-13-2003 08:42 PM |
couldn't you clear coat the CF hood? that would resolve maintenance issues.
also the aluminum hood is 40 some lbs, a cf hood is around 18 lbs (guessing off my memory the last time i saw numbers), not huge, but when you're doing an 'every little bit counts' job, its good.
I don't know how much more safe a flimsy piece of aluminum is over a shattering cf sheet. if you're slamming head on into something thats going to push you're knee's up in an impreza chassis, you are going mighty fast!

But Aluminum dents easily while CF will not dent but my crack.
BTW...the stock steel hood is 30 something pounds while the aluminum hood is like 12-16lbs, I can't remember which.

As mentioned before, being an owner of a carbon-fiber hood on my old Honda, it sucks and isn't worth it unless you have a show car (dark like black) with a crazy body kit.
And about the strength of CF hoods, I always thought they would shatter, but my friend driving his NSX (accelerating really fast I might add) backed into the front left side of my old Honda, breaking the left headlight, smashing the left corner light and left bumper light, breaking a lot of the plastic parts that the headlight connects to, the front left bumper, and the front left fender. Curiously, the hood didn't break or anything. It just had a small crack on the inside, which can only be seen when it's open.

It's not as bad as I made it out to be (now that I read what I typed), but surprisingly the hood looks untouched... except for all the fading and nasty stains and sh!+. (Yes, my car is black and my hood is blue because I was gonna get a body kit and paint my car blue or at least silver with a blue pearl, but I never got around to it. Plus I never really had much time to wash or wax my car when I bought my hood along time ago. I know it looks nasty, so don't tell me.)
A carbon-fiber hood is high maintenance, and from personal experience, they suck, and the benefits are minimal. Only car enthusiasts can appreciate them, while the average onlooker will think, "Why is his hood different from the rest of his car?" (granted your car is a car other than your hood).

Issue #1. Weight. Either hood will weigh less. CF will weigh less than the aluminum but your wallet will as well.
Issue #2. Looks. My question to everyone who doesn't like how it looks, why not paint it? This car looks just fine with painted CF (not too ricey is it everyone?)

Issue #3. Safety... yeah. Ive had a steel hood swing up in an accident and shatter my windshield. I REALLY doubt the cf hood would do that, but the aluminum Im not so sure of. Id rather loose the "structural rigidity" of the hood.
Issue #4. Maintenance. As the owner of a black car, taking care of body panels is always a pain ( I just washed it 2 days ago and a bird "shelled" my car overnight), so the maintenance thing is gonna come into play no matter what.
In the end, its up to you. To me, with a painted CF hood, the only thing that you're loosing is the extra $$$. Not sure that its worth it though.
