02 Rex sunroof options?

I have an 02 WRX, and it really needs a sunroof. Every sedan I have owned until now has had a hole in the roof of some sort. I saw a Tiburion we sold the other day that had a Webasto power sunroof installed by a shop in raliegh. Had a 3/36 warranty on labor and a lifetime warranty on parts. The install was really clean, and the roof worked really nicely. Told me 999.00 to put it in. Anybody else put a sunroof in a Rex?

Hey Obnoixio, I live in Raleigh and I really want a sunroof in my wrx. Where is the place in raleigh you speak of? Maybe if we go there together and get our cars done at the same time we could get a group rate :)

I have the same moonroof installed in my car. $1200.
Search for "02 moonroof" with my name in the Dress up and Style forum and search for posts in the past year. There are pics as well as detailed info there.....

what reason was that?

if you're referring to the mysterious "metal beam" that maintain's teh car's strucural integrity...it's been debunked several times
it's more like a metal sheet and it's only purpose to to keep the roof shape
the sunroof apparatus is far more rigid
adding the sunroof does not, in any way, compromise the car's safety or structure

That's all fine and good until you crash the car and end up with a bent frame. Debunked? Show me where.
Cutting a hole in the roof WILL weaken it, whether or not it's worth it to you is a personal preference, but to just give a blanket "nothing bad will happen" statement isn't a fair answer. You have to look at your options, and decide what works for you.
Just don't crash and you're golden :disco:

Well, since this debate took place about a year ago, I can't recall everything specifically or who said what
but from what I remember, the debunking had something to do with the fact that the 04 WRX body and frame is pretty much identical to the 02/03 with the exception of the front end...and the 04 has the sunroof option
on top of that, the European and Japanese 02/03 models were available with a sunroof option as well despite having the same body and frame
lastly, a lot of sunroof installs on 02/03 models were either done by or contracted out by Subaru Dealerships in the U.S.

Just because cars have sunroofs doesn't mean it doesn't weaken their frames. Personally I wouldn't sacrifice chassis stiffness for a sunroof, but that is just me. I'm not saying getting a sunroof is bad, but people should know that it will weaken the car. That is inevitable when you cut a hole in the roof.

well then by your logic, a sunroof on ANY car is potentially dangerous
if that's the the way you feel then.....well then that's the way you feel I guess

I've heard some of the arguements, but i'm curious why the new ones can have one?(i know it's smaller, but still looks like it doesn't have room for the metal beam) shime in with pictures or comments.
| Obnoxio | 04-14-2004 04:01 PM |
I have heard this argument before, but really its moot for me. I want a roof, I'm gonna have one. From what I have read, and talked to body specialists, in many circumstances, the sunroof actually stiffens the car. You get rid of some of the inherent metal fatigue/flex and replace it with a frame that has longitudinal and lateral braces(the sides of the sunroof frame)

Some say it lies below the metal brace -- thats why the Imprezas with the moonroof lose an inch or two in the head room.

I have had the headliner out of three WRXs. There is a large metal bar that is part of the frame right there.
Just look at your headliner, see that bulge that connects the B pillers? It is a very strong piece of metal that would protect you in case of a rollover. It is part of the frame. There are other, smaller supports (one in front of the B pillers, and a few behind) that don't do anything for the framework of the car, they just support our thin roof.
This argument comes up all the time and there are speculations on both sides. Take the headliner out and then come back to the threads. Once you have seen it then you can make your decision. I don't want to tell people to get a sunroof or not, just go look! :furious:

Having seen this debate a great number of times I just wanted to make a general comment. I could never understand why one sort of mod is somehow considered dangerous (at least by some) and
other , potentially more dangerous mods, are not. For example people rountinley lose their stock seats in favor of racing seats and loose their side air bags. I have yet seen a single comment on the wisdom of losing a side air bag. How about losing a bumper beam for a potentionally weaker one so fog lights can fit?
How smart is it to lose the spare tire to put in a woofer?
I guess my point is that a lot of modifications involve some risk in some form or the other.I guess it just depends on what your willing to risk.

Beautiful point! and yes I've seen in my lifetime more rear end, head-on, and side smashing accidents than I've seen roll-overs:)

well said, but i would never recommend racing seats, removing a bumper beam, or removing the spare tire for that exact reason--less safe! :) safety is currently one of the WRX's strong suits, i say leave it be. but thats just my opinion on a message board FULL of opinions:banana:

Has anyone ever tried using the type of sunroof that opens on the outside of the car? It seems like that would allow the b pillar beam to remain intract, yet still have a nice big opening.

| elsanto | 04-23-2004 10:53 AM |
I've seen my wagon sans roof completely. the pillar is there, do they definitely cut into it for the sunroof installation? ive never seen a sunroof in a wrx, but imagine it would degrade the integrity. and what a dealer does is what a dealer does, it doesnt mean that SOA condones putting sunroofs into the cars, it will just help that dealer move cars.
