Quick WRX side skirt question. part 1

Lightsped 03-25-2002 06:44 PM

Quick WRX side skirt question.

I am thinking of getting the silver side skirts for my silver WRX. My question is do the silver side skirts fit on top of the stock black skirts, or will I need to remove the black skirts before installing the silver skirts? Is there any drilling involved?
H8YNERS 03-25-2002 07:15 PM

You unclip the stock black ones and clip on the new silver ones. They are replacements and use the same clip locations. It's an easy job. Just make sure you have a flathead screwdriver to help pop the clips.

Are they lower than the black sideskirts at all?
WRC51 03-25-2002 08:31 PM

Unless your new skirts are lower - just paint your black sideskirts.
Coach 03-25-2002 08:58 PM

I just performed this big power mod last week and noticed a huge difference.;) But seriously, the stock skirts really complete the look of the car. They are not any lower and are I believe the same ones that come stock, just putrier.
RC51: Your painting idea is not bad but there are a couple of things to remember. Unless you use the krylon touch, a pro paint job will cost about $200. The new ones from the factory with no paint quality issues are $260 to the door. Worth the $60 in my opinion. 2. The rough surface of the stock skirts may not look the way you want when painted.
Hope this helps :)
H8YNERS 03-25-2002 09:09 PM

To piggyback onto what Coach said, there is one additional thing to consider when choosing to paint the stock black skirts/sills. The skirts/sills have a rubberish sealing strip at the top of the skirt. This tends to expand and contract a bit w/the differences in heat etc. This could be a problem w/paint adherence. The OEM painted skirts have a matching pre-color molded rubberish strip attached. On the silver OEM skirts it is a whiteish gray.

The OEM skirts are the exact dimensions and style of the stock flat black ones except they are shiney and smooth. They really compliment the WRX and should have been std all along, IMHO. :)

Dont paint them. Just buy the subaru ones. Extremely great quality and the paint match is perfect. Its a huge waste of money to have a shop paint them, especially when the different surface texutre may not be to your liking.
DuckWRX 03-25-2002 10:12 PM

Get the OEM skirts. They really make the car look more complete and they are so easy to install:D . I got my fro subaruparts.com for about $250.

Have you had the side skirts painted or seen a set that have been painted? I had mine done while the car was in for repairs, I figured what the heck, I wasn't paying for it. Saying they texturing will ruin the paint is a complete fallacy. ANY good body shop can prep the surface for good adhesion and texture.
I guarantee that other than what Stephen mentioned about the rubber strip not being color matched, you couldn't tell my side skirts from a set from SOA. Mine have been through one NW winter, up and down all of western Washington's major mountain passes (I'm a snowboard instructor) and they are still purty. NO adhesion problems, NO texture problems, and perfectly matched to my body color.
Of course, this would have cost 200 dollars, I believe Verdugo could tell us exactly what it costs. Mine was thrown in with the estimate when my cousin wrecked my car. What you're suggesting is just hearsay, not fact.
But if I had to actually pay for the side skirts, I'd probably get the SOA ones just because I'm too lazy to run around and get them painted on my own. Either way, I bet the prices are comparable.

Does the paint scratch/chip easily on the Subaru
painted ones? I have a young daugther climbing in
and out. Also do these fit the wagon?
samowrx 03-25-2002 10:50 PM

the side skirts are the same for both sedan and wagon

I believe they are the same.

Here is a look at a set of OEM skirts.

After talking to a few body shops, I'd much rather buy the factory painted side skirts than deal with them sanding down my stock sideskirts and painting them.

Yes, a friend also had his car in the shop and they painted his skirts. I could see that the final finish was not textured correctly and there were visable flaws. But I cant sterotype all paintjobs from one example. I also own the oem painted skirts. Since your car was in a shop I can see how that was wise to just paint them. I have spent a lot of time in a body shop and I also built my car from the ground up (I bought it totaled). I am not an ignorant consumer. By the way, your car looks great with the wheels. :)
supermarkus 03-26-2002 01:51 AM

I remember you now! How did that project go? I'm glad to see someone else is running around with a healed WRX. I went with a nit-picky repair shop so just about everything they could improve upon, they did so. Unfortunately this included things like pop rivetting the bumper at the fender well area when they didn't like how it just hung on with clips and a couple bolts. But my paint job was flawless, this winter and mountain pass driving is taking it's toll though.

I'm glad you like the wheels, not very many people on this side of the pond have them, they seemed to be pretty popular among the scoobynet crowd. I'm still toying around with the idea of ditching them for some UK 17" golds.
CBoldman 03-26-2002 02:09 AM

UK golds, mhhhhhhh.:) Well the project turned out incredible. Everything went back together seemless and we are all surprised we tore the whole car apart. Problems: drivline wine and crappy windshield wipers. The driveline noise is kinda annyoing but I have all the parts off the parts car to replace it when I get the time. Everything seems perfectly ok besides these two things.

side skirts

ya it may be cheaper to just paint the stock ones and they look fine. but if your gunna get teh aftermarket ones check out the ones from c-west theyre only 280 i think and they look really good.
bjteel 03-26-2002 01:53 PM

What do the C-West ones look like? Got a pic or a link?
DuckWRX 03-26-2002 01:58 PM

just to clarify

i installed my new OEM side skirts today, and can tell you they use the exact same part as the stock (black) unpainted skirts. they just take the stock part and paint it. paint quality is excellent and they obviously use some clear coat. up real close, it looks a little better than the paint on the rest of the car, actually, due to better "metallic" look and depth.
point is, you can just have your stock ones painted, but by the time you find a quality paint shop and use the right paint, it may not save you much. mine cost $221 plus tax (using my 15% off coupon).
kdmd2b 03-28-2002 11:44 PM

Just thought I would add that some people have painted the side skirts themselves with good results. I have been planning to this and if it looks bad then I will buy the OEM ones.

I went to Exeter Subaru and the guy said the oem silver painted side skirts have to have a hole drilled or something to fit onto the car...

Was he wrong? It sounds like based on what you guys said you just pop off the black ones and replace em with the painted ones...

If anyone can clarify this for me it would be great....

And yeah, where do you get a 15% off coupon?
H8YNERS 03-29-2002 11:59 PM

Sorry, the only hole drilling needing to be done is the one in the guy's head from Exeter. No drilling is needed. I know because I put the OEM painted silver ones on my WRX. Take off the stock black ones and clip the OEM painted ones on. It's simple. It burns me when people are selling items they know nothing about.

Schleppy 03-30-2002 12:56 AM

Man, that stinks. I was always under the impression that the guys at Exter were really knowledgeable...

Oh well, one way or the other, I have my name on a set of silvers and I am picking em up Monday :-)
H8YNERS 03-30-2002 12:58 AM

Hey,

It's a great visual mod. It actually ties the whole look together and makes the WRX seem as if it may have been lowered. I know you'll like it and realize how easy it was to put on. :p

I have a 2002 2.5 RS and I was wondering if the black WRX sideskirts will pop right onto my car?
speedbuggy67 03-30-2002 09:01 PM

What are you supposed to do if you have a blaze yellow WRX and want the factory side painted panels?

Scott
raganbogan 03-31-2002 07:19 PM

15% coupon

sorry about the slow response....I was out of town a few days. the 15% off coupon was sent out by Subaru of America, Mid-America Region, to all registered Subie owners (or maybe recent buyers??). The front of it says "you may have won a 2003 Forester", and inside it has some coupons. anyway, one of them is for 15% off anything you order until 4/30/02. "valid only at participating dealers".
