All this Fake STI Badge stuff
Hey guys, I really don't want to ruffle any feathers here, and this is an honest question. I don't own a scooby yet, but will be driving a WRX soon. I have noticed a very popular trend with all the STi badges. I come from the DSM crowd, so forgive my ignorance but, why is it considered cool to badge your Subaru as something it's not? In the DSM world, a guy driving an RS with a GSX badge would end up with a gas tank full of sugar if he showed up at a meet. So why is it cool to dress up your WRX/RS as an STi, or RS as a WRX even though it's not? I've always thought of it as a rice boy thing. You know, the guy with a boost gage in his A pillar, then you pop the hood and there is no turbo in sight. Again, I'm not trying to start anything, and this is a genuine question. But why is it a cool thing to put these STi badges on a non-STi Impreza?

I'm not into stickers myself but here's my guess. I'll bet that most of the people here who put STi stickers on their cars have some STi parts on their cars (shifter, suspension...etc.
My last car was a 90 eclipse GSX and I always laughed when I saw a GS badged up like a GSX...only problem is the GSs had the exhaust on the other side.

well again..
i say to each their own...
STi is coveted and many want to show that they've aftermarket parts on their car so they add a badge.. or a sticker...
nothing wrong w/that...
i do think it's silly however, to see a car w/a WRX sticker (the ORIGINAL WRX) and STi badges... now they are kinda confuzzled arent they? [img]http://www.i-club.com/ubb-files/smilies/biggrin.gif[/img]
but again... as i do my own thing... i can only stand by and support those that do theirs...
it's just a matter of preference. [img]http://www.i-club.com/ubb-files/smilies/smile.gif[/img]

as many have mentioned, STI is not just a model of impreza, they are Subaru Technica International, a subaru tuner, putting sti stickers/badges on your impreza (if you own STI stuff) is more like putting a greddy logo on your car if you own a greddy product, or a mugen sticker if you own a mugen product

Dime a dozen GSX? Are you kidding? The GSX was the turbo'd up all wheel drive one...hell, maybe they're all around you, but here, you'd be hard pressed to find one...and also, i've never seen a mitsu with Ralliart stickers...but thats just me

I wouldn't say people are making a car something it's not by putting STi stickers on it, actual STi badges? I suppose that's pushing it a bit- as stated before though, STi is also Subaru Technica International, and I don't think it's particularly ricey, because really, at this point, the STi isn't even available in North America, and guy with half a nuts knowledge about Subarus knows this, so it's not like anyone out there is putting STi stickers on the car, trying to make people think it's an 'STi' - it may be a different story when the real thing gets here though-
again, I think it's a bit different than putting WRX badges on an RS, or putting Type R stickers on Integras, or improper markings on Eclipses-
I dunno, maybe I'm wrong...? I laugh my ass of every time I see Type R badges on civic hatchbacks and accords- geez, I hope people don't think that when they see the STi stickers on my fog light covers... I just have em on there cuz I think they look neat-

I've got STI badges on my car...the metal ones a la 22B. I'll take 2 creams with the sugar. [img]http://www.i-club.com/ubb-files/smilies/smile.gif[/img]
In all seriousness though...I really like the way the STI logo looks, and the badges just look good. I bought the badges at STI Tokyo, and couldn't stop looking at them on the plane. [img]http://www.i-club.com/ubb-files/smilies/smile.gif[/img] Do I want everyone to think my car is an STI? No. I just like looking at my car with those badges. Subie Gal said it best..."to each their own"
Mike Moffa put 555's all over his car, I think it looks cool, does he want everyone to think that he's driving the WRC car? No.
Forget for a moment what the owner might be trying to convey, and just look at the car, is it pleasing to the eye? See? I thought so! [img]http://www.i-club.com/ubb-files/smilies/smile.gif[/img]
These posts are popping up more and more....must be the weather.

Iwishihadanoreo,
Amen, brother! I've always had a hard time understanding why people would dress their cars up with all those STi and WRX stickers and yet not have the horsepower to back it up. Take a look at some of the posts in the past year and you'll see people spending a lot of dollars on bodykits, wheels, paintjobs, clear lights and my personal favorite : exhausts (why oh why do people without turbos buy these melon shooters? What are they thinking? "Hey mister 5.0 Mustang GT/Camaro Z28/300zx/Corvette owner look at my slow car?! Please leave my ass in the dust looking stupid!" Uggh!

Umm, what do stickers have to do with horsepower?
A Camaro covered with Moroso or Edelbrock stickers looks just as stupid as a Honda buried under Mugen and Type R stickers. So by your logic, when a car loses a street race, it should immediately transfer it's graphics to the winning car? [img]http://www.i-club.com/ubb-files/smilies/rolleyes.gif[/img][img]http://www.i-club.com/ubb-files/smilies/lol.gif[/img]
Perhaps the best evidence of this is precisely the point you make: some people spend thousands on decorating their car without spending a dime on performance. That fact alone should tell you how irrelevant horsepower is to these folks.

OK, ive got STI parts and 3 stickers, two on the STI(replica)fog lite covers and one small one on the rear, tuned by.I dont feel as if im bein somethin im not.STI is a tuner and ive got some of there parts (pricey)on my car.
The thing is, at least around here, nobody even knows who STI is or cares.Even the Honda guys ask.I personally think there logo is well done. Now the WRX thing mite be a little overboard. But to each his own.
My two cents,,Rudy

FHI would not have spent the time and money to develop a offshoot company called STi just to make one car. It is in fact the only genuine aftermarket add on performance parts and accessory company for Subaru. Have you ever heard of a car called "Mugen", "Rally Art", hell even "SVT". These companies are in existence to help owners of autos from their parent companies express them selves and make their cars unique using, in a way upgraded OEM parts, and at the same time funnel money back in to the auto manufacturers bank account. The name WRX is indeed a model of the Impreza line up and they also have a WRX with add on's to make up the STi model.
I see nothing wrong in placing badges, stickers or anything else reflecting the add on's we add to our cars Sti or not. If any one who has any thing to say about it to me will here the back side of my tongue and my middle finger in their face.

It simular to TDR stikers on Toyotas
If you have STI part - put STI stickers on a car, I don;t se a problem with that.
I have a trubo, but I don't call my car a WRX - my car is an impreza turbo.

STI isn't like a "type r" or vtec
STI makes versions of cars but they are more so a parts supplier and make rally parts/street parts for imprezas. Same with prodrive but there isnt much prodrive stuff out there. Prodrive makes a prodrive street version but they are mostly selling parts.
The only thing I have ever seen what you are reffering to is WRX stickers on RS you see that would be the problem youa re thinking of
cause WRX is a type and if its on a RS it better have a turbo at min.

whats so hard to understand about this?? Ralliart, TRD, Nismo, Mugen... STi get the point?? There is nothing ricey about putting STi stickers on a Subaru.
| omahasubaru | 04-20-2001 12:00 AM |
I have two STi decals on my side rear windows and a small TUNED BY (in white) STi (in yellow) below my 2.5RS badge on my 2.5 RS... Why people ask?? Because I have added STi parts on my car. I'm not claming it is a WRX, it is a 2.5RS (as the badge says) tuned by STi.
I would never put WRX badges on my car, unless I had and EJ20T motor in my car to back it up.
Others feel that an N/A RS with WRX decals is fine. It is up to there own. People are free to do what they want, even if it isn't right in your eyes (or mine).
I don't think there are very many Impreza's out there with WRX badges that aren't turbo, or very many that have STi decals without some STi product on there cars.
IMHO

I agree with you generally, but kids have always put "wannabe" stickers and badges on cars. Like some 17 year old is going to import a WRX STi! [img]http://www.i-club.com/ubb-files/smilies/lol.gif[/img]
However, given that the STi is not available here, and you could "roll your own" with an STi drivetrain, how tough do you want to be about authenticity? If I take an Impreza shell and build it to WRX STi specs, can I wear the badge? Most marques have a soft spot about this sort of thing if you really build a replica, like the thousands of Carerra RS or muscle car replicas that are every bit as good, if not better, than the originals.
BTW, what kind of a moron thinks a dime-a-dozen Eclipse GSX will have it's honor besmirched if some kid in a GS puts a badge on? I guess they shoot you if you have a type R sticker, huh.

Right on. I understand now (the STi thing anyway). I don't think that I would ever put it on my car, but that's just me. Not that I have any problem at all with STi stickers, I just don't really like stickers on a street driven car. The STi badges, and WRX badges I'm still not to sure about though. As subiegal said, each IS own. If I'm ever sponsored by greddy, or HKS, then I'll wear the sticker. Untill then, my car may have the parts under the hood, but that's about it. But thanks for the explaination guys/gals. Again, forgive my ignorance, and I hope I did'nt offend anyone.

I can see this post getting out of hand really quick; this debate could go on for at least 10 more pages.
I think what bothers some people (like Iwhisihadanoreo, and dead-eye) is that they have this "Who does that guy think he is or is trying to fool??" mentality (and you guys are well within your right to ask), but I think the more you ask the question, the more you will get the response that it is the personal taste of the owner. Everyone here knows that no matter how powerful a US Impreza is..it will never be an STI unless the VIN actually reflects it. This arguement is strictly about esthetics and assumption... it is a matter of opinion, feathers have been ruffled because it makes an accusation of wrong intention.
I've seen GQ models sporting Tommy Hilfiger clothing, should I sneer at every person that ISN'T a GQ model that wears the clothing? (does he think he's a model?!?!?!)

2yLiTe, that's a good point. I work in the sporting goods industry, and it cracks me up when I see some guy wearing a HUGE Nike logo on their shirt. To me, Nike means one thing, but to some kid on the street, Nike is this great icon and he desperately wants to be associated with that icon. I feel like asking, "do you work for Nike? did they pay you to advertise for them? would you still show up at work if your boss wasn't paying you?"
I guess it's just human nature. Some people need association with a popular brand to feel good about themselves.

but then again i have seen a black civic with a Type R sticker on the side and i thought it looked nice. I saw a white accord with a Type R windshield banner and i thought it was tacky. if it looks good i dont care. and if it looks good to you, you shouldnt care either.

That is the point that I was trying to make in my second post. Until I am sponsored by one of those company's I won't put the stickers on my car. But anyway, this post is getting a little hot. People have taken offense at the fault of there own insecurity perhaps. - I was just asking a question. But before this goes any further, would a Mod please close this discussion.
And BTW - I don't look down on anyone that has an STi badge on a non-factory STi. I never had, and I never will. I just didn't understand it, that's all. Now a "Type R" sticker on an accord is another story - those guys will always make me laugh. Anyway...drive it like you stole it!
