Boxer4Racing STi at GTLive VIR part 1

pleiades 10-10-2006 09:55 PM

Boxer4Racing STi at GTLive VIR
Dale Teague of Boxer4Racing and I were also present at VIR for GTLive. Since the boxer4 sti was not totally prepped (only 4pt rollbar currently, needed a full cage), we were only able to run the "Tarzan Lap Battle' on the Patriot course. Although a smaller crowd, and a smaller track, it was still an absolute blast!

We took top time overall for the event! The time for my fastest lap was a 53.5 (This is only a 1 mile course). I got to take Tarzan Yamada for a ride in the STi, and I also allowed him a lap in the car. He ran a 54.3 in the car, with a bit of drifting, and one slightly nervous passenger screaming about stock brakes during the fastest braking zone.

I was also happy to see that Tarzan didn't get too far ahead in the Cyber Evo, when he managed to run a 51.4 after a few laps around the patriot course. Obviously that track takes the aero package out of the mix a bit, but still happy to see that we could run that close that car/driver combo.

Hahah

"stock brakes...STOCK BRAKES!!"
pleiades 10-10-2006 10:00 PM

yeah, I don't make a good passenger.

Dale has video of me instructing him in my old RS on a road course. Goes something like, "..if you're going to drive this fast, you don't need me. Just pull in the pits and I'll get out..."
MartinD 10-10-2006 10:01 PM

Watched you this weekend, you did very well Steven...
STi-MAN 10-10-2006 10:13 PM

tarzan prob would have run faster without you yelling "STOCK BRAKES!!" ;) I like how he laughs after you said that

great video hahah what are the mods on the car, it rotates so well.

i got a chuckle out of that as well!

Very cool!
AndrewSS 10-10-2006 11:03 PM

Nice, that patriot course looks like a blast! :D
Fred 10-10-2006 11:10 PM

Congratulations, Steven. I know I only managed a 54.4 with my nearly-bone-stock 04 STi, but maybe I'll give you some competition next time. (somebody needs to :p ) I plan to install some crash bolts in the front and empty the change tray - and most importantly, drain the windshield washer fluid.

So you were downshifting to 2nd before going up the spiral... I was only going down to 3rd there. That is definitely something I'll try next time. I just figured I'd run out of gear too soon and opted to avoid the extra shift, but the timing of the upshift to 3rd looked like it worked out great.

What rpm did you have your beeper set on? I had mine set at 5500 and was hearing the beeper go off in the same places.

I was pretty much driving the same lines as you, except at the top of the hill where you get sideways (12 seconds in), I just let the car track out and jump straight over the curbing on the left, and going into the autox section (the almost-blind braking zone after the long uphill "straight") I went straight across the curbing (ok, mostly grass  ) at the entry in 3rd gear, across the curbing on the left, then downshifted to 2nd before the right at 45 sec in your video. And I was going mostly through the grass in the right hander just before the finish, except on my fastest run. Probably got a little better acceleration by staying on the pavement.

And I wish I had gone to manual center diff control early on - it was much easier to predict what was going to happen, and to make it do what I wanted it to do. First time on the track with it, though, and I pussed out and left it in auto until I felt comfortable pushing a little harder.

I've already talked to Matt and made plans to acquire some track pads & dedicated rotors. :D

That is funny as hell....I guess you just wanted him to know hey this isn't the Cyber Evo lets not put it into the wall....lol

The car is on Ohlins Flag-i coilovers, Whiteline 27mm front & rear bars with solid endlinks. I run the diff in auto all the time - I'm pretty sure it's smarter than I am.

Well if it makes you feel any better, I had at least 1/2 a tank of washer fluid, stuff in the glovebox & center console, spare tire & jack in the trunk, and the additional 45lbs of the rollbar in the back. ;)

I'm not so sure that the downshift to 2nd was the way to go there. Tarzan didn't do it, and the didn't seem to bog too bad, despite him throwing it sideways. The upshift did help the rotation though as the car started up the hill.

My rev warning was set at 6500, which makes sense given the touch more power than you had.

You definatly made up time driving straight into that first turn after the long straight. I though about it quite a few times, but of course my car is a bit lower than yours, and I didn't want to drag the center of the car across the race curb.

As I said before, great driving, and I look forward to having somebody else on track sometime pushing me to go faster. ;)

Yeah,

Surprisingly enough, those curbs weren't large enough to cause rub on the liners. Or at least I didn't hear them rub.
Element Tuning 10-11-2006 10:28 AM

Congratulations guys and thanks again for getting the Element Tuning STI back on the track for the main event.

Yelling at Tarzan that your car has stock brakes probably meant nothing as the Cyber EVO is also running stock brakes  Crazy but true!

Thanks,
Phil

Yea, when you are running a few hundred lbs of downforce you don't need to slow down as much, and the drag created does a bit of the slowing for you.

Jon
(who actually was on stock brakes at mid ohio in the AMS car, and 158 - 60 didn't feel all that bad, with more aero drag and downforce, it really wouldn't be bad at all)
skuttledude 10-12-2006 10:29 AM

Great vids. "Stock brakes!", that was funny and don't blame you a second for saying that. Excellent driving.

I agree with your there. Auto is the way to go for me as well.

BTW, I like your hill climb vid!!!

Did they post the results anywhere online yet? I had to leave before the final results were posted on Sunday.

Did anyone get video of my off-course in group-3 on sunday?

Or you could just get some Ohlins before the KW's bend their ears off. ;)
Edo Performance 10-13-2006 05:10 PM

kudos to Dale @ Boxer4Racing. Very knowledgeable guy and very easy to get a long with. Good meeting you, hope to see you guys around (possibly SEMA, yes yes?) :D
wagonman 10-14-2006 12:28 AM

Videos are awesome steven...I wish i could have made it up to watch, but sadly work own3s me.

I like EDO Performance's idea...we all need to go to SEMA, and Dale owes me a shirt and hat or I am not giving him any more money for parts ;)

And the stock brakes yelling reminds me of a time when someone just about destroyed my stock clutch earlier this year :furious:
Edo Performance 10-14-2006 01:01 PM

Maybe we should have an unofficial gathering and grab a drink!

I'm trying to talk Dale into it. Patrick and I both think we should be there, but I think Dale is too chicken to take Patrick and I both to Vegas!
