I was worried as well, tough hit, car did it's job pretty dang well.
One thing I also noticed, the rescue truck was FLYING when it was coming to the scene, sliding and such.. Those guys sure do push when getting to crash sites. (IRL/CART both really)

me too :(
That could not have happened at a worse possible part of that course.
I saw her on Saturday and was impressed by her presence.
"she did give a smile and thumbs up."

I did too, I'm still a bit of a mess after seeing that, when the chassis was flailing about I didn't see a helmet and thought the worst...I just can't comprehend how she's absolutely fine after that.

I can't believe he said that...
He was interviewed before the race and said the championship was out of reach, but that he still wanted to win.

The one thing I saw in the video was that her helmet was in place, and her arms were in the cockpit. Even with arm-restraints you will see the arms up a little, especially if the driver is unconsious.
To me the hope I had before the update on her condition from Johnson was that she was at least concious, backed up by the fact she was keeping her "hands and arms inside the ride at all times"

I guess this says something about race car safety engineering.
I did get to see the newer and supposedly safer Panoz Champ car run on Saturday. imo on looks alone it's better than an F1 car.

I was there shooting for some magazines and was one of the few there when she came out of the medical semi. Considering how hard of hit she had I was impressed how lucid she was. She seemed almost embarrassed how people were waiting out there for her. I was able to see some closed circuit footage of the area and it was pretty amazing what happend to the car.
Side note, a Miata in the MX-5 cup lost his wheels just after the kink and did a number to his car too. Daniels the series champion. That race was a crash fest too. I think one car maybe made it through the race untouched.
I'll post some pics later

I figured after the live shot I wouldn't see it again, when they showed the replay, that was actually the first thing that made me think she was ok.. typically if the radio chatter is bad, the tv director won't show the crash again.
Once I felt a little safer because they were showing it, I watched a little closer. As an open-wheel driver much of the time myself, I looked for hands out of the cockpit as a potential indicator of bigger problems.
When Stan Fox crashed at Indy in 95, in the press room after there were all kinds of rumors that he had died, when we looked at the photos of the crash, you could see he had crossed his arms and grabbed his belts, typical of sprint car drivers in an upside-down crash, or for this board.. rally drivers. By looking at those we knew that he had reacted in some way to save himself, so he probably wasn't dead.
Legge's crash worried me in the way that the front hit then the back, that kind of an impact will sometimes drive suspension pieces into the cockpit causing leg injuries, which is why it is all the more amazing she walked away with only bruises. Here is to hoping the new car is a good safety wise as the ones it is replacing.

They stopped showing the crash on teh TVs around the circuit and a lot of the spectators were getting concerned. However the mood around the medical trailer was more of whats going instead of something really bad happened. The bag the car came back in was depressingly small too.

They showed a shot of the parts of the car on the back of a flatbed, it was a mess for sure. The tub itself seemed to hold up well, but yea, when everything is ripped off it, they are not that big. (fit very well in the back of a pickup in fact.)
The announcers suggested that she start autographing them and auction them off for the charity. As it is, her suit and helmet and such are getting auctioned off.. hellof a story for the future owners.
I have heard of NASCAR drivers doing lazy spins and crashes to get the car on TV, but I guess Legge one-upped them to make some more for charity. (yes.. my tongue is firmly in my cheek when i say that)

That was horrible. Like everyone else has said, my heart sank. I was just praying that nothing horrible happened to her at the same time that we got da Matta back.

If that's not a testament to how much an influence downforce has, I don't know what is. Lose the wing, turn in and whoop! Away she goes.
I tuned in just after it happened and thought there's no way Legge survived that. I imagine she had time to get her hands off the wheel and grab her harness before the impact though.

We are seeing this more and more as downforce levels break the mounts, F1 usually has a couple of wings break per year which cause crashes.
At Indy, Roberto Guerrero was driving the 2-seat car and giving a ride a couple years ago when the wing broke, and the passenger got to crash at 150mph... One of AJ Foyt IV's crashes was the same thing, the wing broke on the front straight, and he made it to turn two before he turned it around.
Along the same lines, it is why an F1/IndyCar/Champcar can't corner at more than a 2' slip angle for the most part.. as soon as the car reaches a critical angle, the air is no longer going over the wings in the correct direction, downforce is lost, and there is no saving it. IndyCar guys will often describe the handling of a car at high speeds as "push and in the wall" because of this.

Yeah, this was an eye opener for me. I've never really given much thought to downforce, much less to what happens when it suddenly goes away. Never been much of an open wheel fan.

That's why subaru put the vertical plates in the middle of their WRC wing. It turns the air and forces it to go straight over the wing and still generate downforce when the car is sideways.

This is the last event I'm doing with this setup as I'm getting a D2x or D2xs here real soon.
Most were shot with a D70s and a 300 f4 AF-s. ISO 200 and mostly sub 1/500 shots. Friday and Saturday were tough with lotsa rain and low light and the D70 sucks at most ISOs above 200 (it's lowest). The other thing that helps at many of the corners was credentials to get close to the track. At Road America you are allowed anywhere with credentials except the outside of 13 by the wall. You don't want to be there anyways, the cars are loaded up, moving fast through a blind turn.
Over the winter I hope to add the D2xs and a 400 2.8 and swap the 80-200 for the 70-200 VR and a 1.4x extender. In that order. I doubt I'll get past the 400 2.8 unless I get some great jobs over the winter.

Cool, thanks for the info. I took pictures at Indy for the F1 race this year but was not happy with them. You can get similarly close to the cars there for the infield.

Just do what I do. Get yourself in the right spot and shoot 5000 pictures. I think I have only 3700 from the weekend but I didn't shoot much Champ Car or Atlantic because I'll never get much money if any out of those shots. I spent most of my time with Miata and Cooper Ford.

I know I took about 6 gigs of images during the four day event, my problem was I was taking them ALL at the same bad settings!
