Chrome Shifter Trim Ring Alternative (Pics)

Hey all. I put up a post a little less than a month ago about this item because it was on ebay. I wanted to buy it but I couldn't justify spending $135 or however much it was. I looked online for it and found out that it costs even more ($170+). So I was pretty bummed until I went to new york city last weekend and walked into my friend's import shop. Saw it in a display case there and got hooked up with a very "friendly" price (Thanks a lot Jerome!). Here are the pics. Sorry for the poor camera quality, my digital camcorder isn't the best when taking still pics, but you get the idea.

I had to do a little bit of tweaking of the shift boot to get it to fit properly with the momo knob, and there were two mounting screws that I opted not to use because I didn't want to drill. Instead, I purchased some 3M automotive double sided foam tape from autozone and lined the entire bottom of the metal plate with it. Trust me, the thing is immovable. Good fit overall, easy enough to install, just slide it over and tape it down. The baseplate is solid metal, real heavy duty stuff, chrome ring is nice, and the shift boot is genuine leather. I think the company that makes these is called venom. You can do a search on google for "venom shifter f1" or something and come up with shops that have them, but they're way overpriced. Just thought I'd post em if anyone is wondering how it looks. Personally, I love it. Some of you may hate it. I think it looks a hell of a lot better than the sti trim (both are ridiculously overpriced anyways) and this was a lot easier to install. Peace.

One more thing, the stitching for the boot is red originally, I used a felt tip marker to color it in black. That is all.

The price for me was really cheap because I know this guy really well. Lets just say it was below what the sti trim is retail.

That looks damn good! Maybe you could arrange for a group buy through your friend for a relatively "friendly" price...I'm sure there will be people interested!

I'll see if he's interested. Quite honestly though, he's decided to go to grad school and I'm not sure if he'll be keeping the shop or selling it to someone else. I'll talk to him.

The trim plate can be installed in less than 15 minutes all without having to remove the console, just drill a couple of pilot holes and install the supplied torx screws. Installation instructions are supplied with the shifter trim.
This trim plate is way easier to install than the STI version by far!! The STI trim plate requires disassembly of the center console and modification by grinding away the areas that do not clear properly. The STI version is a total pain to install and it is way more expensive! [/quote]

The shop name is Speed Expressions, located in Queens. I'm not familiar with the new york area that well. Also, I'm not sure how much longer they'll be in business. I'll look for the number. :)

I see $75 on their site now - how'd you swing $55????!?
Rojorex - you can do a search on that brand (autospeed) but I hear the fitment is great and the installation is a breeze. Only down side, afaik, is the lack of 'STI' logo, but the purists would tell you that you shouldn't have that if your car isn't STI, so.........

i-one,
That is a very nice looking shifter trim. When you mentioned tweat the shift boot, what do you mean? Did you have to remove the center console to install this?
Its a nice piece that I'm sure many of us would consider. ;)
Does the trim over-hang the center console? The shifter doesn't interfer with the trim does it? Thanks.

Thanks. Okay, let me see if I can explain this. I'll address your questions first before I get into it. I did not have to remove the center console at all. The trim hangs over the center console a little bit on the sides to stabilize it (this is one area that I applied the 3M tape to). It wasn't a hard thing to do at all. Lastly, the trim does not interfere with shifting at all, there is no contact whatsoever between the ring and the shifter. This was an initial concern of mine but the design allows more than enough room to move freely, there is absolutely no difference in feel from stock, it just looks a whole lot better, heh heh.
I have to mention that along with the momo knob I bought a fabricated adapter from someone on here that was making them to keep the stock boot flush with the bottom of the knob. The chrome ring shifter came with a metal grommet piece that the leather boot was connected to via a plastic ring. I cut the ring off to take the grommet off and was left with the top of the leather boot being completely open (but tapered). I placed the adapter piece through the boot and tightened the leather around it with a plastic zip tie from the inside so it was not visible from the outside. After that, I put the momo knob onto the adapter and the boot sat flush with the bottom of the knob. Then it was just a matter of screwing the knob on to the threaded shifter stem and taping the piece down. I did not even have to remove the stock boot. Below is a diagram and a picture of the shifter trim unit off of the car. I hope this helps because this diagram took me a long time to make (but it was fun). :alien:

I talked to my friend in Queens and unfortunately he is no longer in the import tuning business. He has decided to sell the shop in order to go to grad school. I'll keep trying to source these things though... although prices look pretty steep so far. :(

To me, that EVO looking Trim, looks tacky and out of place.
The STI trim is quite cheap, only $70 shipped and the cheap looking replica one is $50 and made of cheap looking aluminum.
The real STI trim gives it the real JDM look.

I appreciate both trims (just like with females - disclaimer: joke, albeit a tasteless one  ). I think the chrome ring looks more euro and the sti looks jdm. I also like both jdm and euro looks on anything... but in the case of my wrx, even though it's a japanese car I'm going more with a euro style. With cars, if it makes you happy, that's all that matters I guess.
