Clear side marker question 02-03

Just got my clear side markers from Boxer4racing.. they are the APC ones -- I've done a search and can't really find anything about helping these things fit properly. I spent $65 on these things and they fit like Nell Carter in a Victoria's Secret add. They won't get snug at all -- what the hell?? HELP!!!
| djerickd | 12-10-2004 11:53 AM |
yeah they suck, you should have got the JDM ones made by subaru...
| chewbakarox | 12-10-2004 11:59 AM |
$65?? That's pretty pricey for APC's. I ordered a set of JDM clears from subydude.com. They are offered as a set (corners and sidemarkers), but if you email subydude you can ask if he'll split up the set and just sell you the corners. I can't remember how much I paid, but they fit perfect. No problems at all and they look great IMHO. Good luck....

I have the JDM ones for sale, $90 shipped. Subydude's are $120. They fit perfectly since they are OEM, and they are in mint condition.

Which one is this? Does it look like any of the 5 types below? Where is the fitment problem? I have a pair of Type 1, and the rear part looks just like the oem, so they mount exactly the same as the oems. Maybe if you post a picture of the backside, you might get more help in terms of what to modify to improve fitment.

i've had the type 4 or 5 from ebay..they fit pretty well with the same spring OEM type mechanism. If i were to do it the cheap way again, id split them an use some heavy duty glue.
eventually i lost the covers due to heat and cold, splitting them apart :p

I have type 1's , and the spring mechanism will not stay locked due to shabby plastic molding. Repeat, I cannot get them to fit snug.

Wraith, you have a pm -- holla back if you will kind sir.

If I understand this correctly, you should be able to remedy the situation by stuffing something semi-flexible in the spring gap. For example, if you have pipe insulation tape (which has the consistency of a foam tape), you can roll a few inches and lodge it in that spring gap. With the right amount, you should be able to improve the effective stiffness of the spring such that it is soft enough for you to be able to install the sidemarkers, yet stiff enough for the sidemarkers to stay put.

I used to have a pair of the Type 2s, and they fit fine. Then I sold them. Had a slight leak in them, though, so build quality was still only so-so. Luckily I didn't pay too much for them at the time.

I have the apc ones and they did not fit right either so I bent the metal piece some and placed electrical tape on the back of the lights so they fit snug with the body. doing this might help alot.

I had two pairs, the first pair came with its own bulbs which melted, then I got the OBX ones from vivid racings page. They fit very close to stock and were like $30. I couldn't justify spending $100+ on JDM sidemarkers...
| deebo | 12-11-2004 01:52 PM |
another satisfied obx owner.. they fit perfectly and are like 24 bucks off ebay
| pleue | 12-11-2004 05:04 PM |
obx is the way to go. I have them (type 5). just search on ebay for em, there's a guy selling them for i think 24 bucks and he's a good guy to buy from in my experience. fit is like stock as is design, except they're clear.
| XRayHipp | 12-11-2004 05:51 PM |
Thanks sat -- but I'm gonna just return these markers to Dale at B4racing and hopefully put the $65 I spent for them towards a Perrin crank pulley. I mean, if you spend 65 for a pair of reflectors and 24 gauge wires and 2 bulbs the s h i t better fit properly -- Ya heard|||| I'd rather spend the triple digits for proven JDM markers which, quite frankly, look a hell of a lot better and the fitment is dead nuts.
| deebo | 12-11-2004 07:28 PM |
the obx's fit like stock and theyre 20-30 dollars theres really no reason to spend more just cause its says JDM

The jdm ones do look alot better than these aftermarket ones. They are darker than white and don't have the reflective housing inside, which IMO makes it look cheesy like the reflective housings in altezza taillights and various APC lighting.

Actually, the type 4 & 5 above has a retroreflective lens much like the oem amber sidemarkers.
As for the types 1-3, they do lack the retroreflective property.

i had some that i got off of ebay. i bled them in with a special silicone type of glue that i got at autozone. i took them out casue they looked like dogass.

Sweet, I just picked up a set of the OBX ones after reading this thread :D
I've had type 1, 3 and the JDM ones and weren't really satisfied with any of them for various reasons... either the fit was wayyy off and they were super loose, or they just looked too out of place like those diamond "Euro" design ones. The JDM ones didn't fit a bulb and I didnt' want to dremel it out, and the whitish color doesn't really suit the car I thought.

How did the JDM ones not fit the bulb? Are you sure they were real OEM ones from Japan? I have the JDM ones and the bulb twists in exactly like the stock orange one.

Uncle Ben may be talking about the JDM ones available as a SAA (Subaru Auto Acccessory) part. (See picture below. Picture taken from www.japanparts.com , which should also sell them)
For this version, the oval-shaped ones serve the function of the USDM's sidemarkers, while parallelepiped-shaped ones only contain passive retroreflectors.

Exactly satrya. Holy, I didn't know they came in other rainbow colors too! Haha I would have tried the blue ones :P
I got the clear JDM's from Subydude ($100US, ouch), and on the back the hole that normally accepts a bulb is sealed over. As mentioned they don't require sidemarker lights in Japan, since all cars have the oval fender blinkers.

They have a similar option for the SG Foresters. Only the oval pieces of course.

you pay for what you get, although that is a lot to pay for something that fits so bad, some ebay ones i have seen fit well, i just painted my oem's white. looks nice but am looking into the jdms. good luck with that.

like Uncle Ben said, there is no cutout to insert the OEM bulb assembly. a little time with the dremel and the bulb fit like a glove!

Okay - I have the Type 1's - dremeled them to fit the factory bulb socket, but they melted and cracked!! I made them fit properly using electrical tape as a shim!! ; (
I've just ordered the OBX's from ebay - $24 + $10 shipping : )

Got the OBX's in - they fit perfectly and look great! - much better quality than the old Type 1's that I had, and they fit the factory bulb socket - only downside was they came with blue?? bulbs, so I had to go to Pep Boys and get a pair of orange bulbs for $2.99. (I've done the side marker / turn signal mod ; ))
