Door card/panel question... part 1

prelude/2.5rs 09-29-2005 09:25 PM

Door card/panel question...
Hey guys!
I have an 02/03 WRX wagon and just purchased a set of 04 STI door panels for dirt cheap because they are in "good" shape...not excellent. Anyways, the plastic on the STI panels do have their share of scratches but the blue "suedish" cards are in excellent shape. Is there anyway I can take the cloth cards out of my stock WRX panels and replace them w/ the STI suede cards? I looked at the back of the STI panels, and they looked to be riveted w/ plastic rivets and the tops melted so they won't come off. There are also a few philips screws behind there. Has anyone taken their cloth cards out? If so, a little info would be great. Let me know guys! Thanks!

Yes you can !
Just take apart the door panels and rip the fabric off ! Then glue it on !

Here is a pic.. Not a very good one.. But a pic nonetheless

HEy... You can see the door cards I did in the back ground..... SOMEWHERE...
enewtabie 09-29-2005 10:57 PM

Thanks for the pic, but I'm not looking to rip the fabric off of the STI cards and glue them to my stock cards. I'm looking to take the whole suede card out of the STI panels, then taking the stock fabric cards out of the stock panels, then attaching the STI suede card to the stock panels. Has anyone done this? Let me know guys. Thanks!

Thats so not worth the effort you put into it !!!

Make it easy on yourself man!
prelude/2.5rs 09-29-2005 11:17 PM

It doesn't look like too much work. I just want to make sure I can take these panels apart and put them back together w/ no hitch. Anyone???

All I see are girls.......nice pic.....Oh wait, theres a car back there

I have the same problem as you man.. I would like to know if the blue inserts is attached to the blue vinyl peice or if it is just tucked into the card slot. I picked up a set of 4 and 2 of the door panels are in bad shape. Let me know if you get an answer.
synernut 09-30-2005 05:36 PM

I made my own door cards for about $6.00.

Anyone have a definite answer? I guess I'm gonna have to try taking them apart. Let me know before I ruin something...

The two pieces should fit together. They didn't change the door cards until 2005.
prelude/2.5rs 09-30-2005 10:04 PM

Well, I took a look at the STI panels and it looks like the fabric cards will not come out by itself. If I dremel off the rivets and take out the 3 screws, the fabric cards and the vinyl sill above it will come out together. This is not good for me. 3 of the 4 panels I have contains scratches or shallow cuts on the vinyl, top sills.
Hey synernut...do you have a write-up w/ pics on how to do your $7.00 door card mod? I may end up doing that instead of putting these STI panels on. Let me know. Thanks!

I don't have any pics, but I have a vague write-up.

I found some fabric at a fabric store that was like the fabric on the STi's doors, and bought a yard for $6.00. Then I used a dremel to grind off the plastic rivets that hold the two halves of the door together. Next I peeled the cloth off of the top half. I cut a piece of the new fabric a little bigger than the area I needed to cover, and used spray adhesive for fabric to attatch it to the door panel. Start at the top and tuck it into the groove and work down to smooth it out. Once it was all smooth I trimmed off the excess fabric. Then I used superglue and to reattatch the plastic rivets.

If you like you can use this to make your own write-up. Don't forget to add some pics.

Thanks for the info, synernut. My question is: How do you get the suede fabric attached to the top of where the stock fabric used to be? It seems as though it will not separate from the vinyl sill above it. I can see where you got the fabric through to the backside of the panel on the sides and the bottom...just not the top. I hope this makes sense. Let me know. Thanks!

There is a groove in the panel where it is just tucked into. Use a Bondo spatula, or a credit card to tuck the top edge in. Then fold the rest over the top of the door card, and spray the adhesive on the patch where you are going to place the fabric. Then work it down. Keep it smooth.
prelude/2.5rs 10-01-2005 09:26 PM

Did you take off the stock cloth or did you apply the suede over it?

Thanks for the info!!! I am in the same boat as Prelude/2.5rs. I got my cards in the mail from another member here and UPS damaged two of the cards. I am hoping to use synernut's description to help fix my panels. My stock WRX panels are in perfect condition.

Synernut I have a few questions. How is the super glue holding up on your install? Did you consider Epoxy instead of superglue? Are the studs solid plastic or is it a hollow piece that the ends are melted down to secure the upper panel? I was hoping to be able to use screws like the ones above the door handle with a washer to secure the rivets that I would have to dremel out to release the panel.

Here is what I have to work with.

Hey RSTuner. Your STI panels look mint compared to mine ;) I wouldn't use epoxy due to the fact it may eat through the suede. That stuff is strong. Let me know how evrything turns out. I may try this mod within the nest week. Good luck!

Mike - Epoxy would be used in place of the super glue to secure the parts I dremeled to separate the card into two pieces so I could replace the fabric inserts. I am going to look into using screws instead of glue or epoxy if I can. If you get to this mod before me and you have sucess, PLEASE let me know.

Hey Brent.
It sounds like you dremeled just the fabric card out of the panel. Is this correct? That's kind of ballsy considering the fabric panel is attached to the upper vinyl sill. I was thinking of doing the same thing, but I figured you would be able to see the line of separation from the outer side. Where did you dremel? Could you post a pic or PM it to me? Or...are you talking about just separating the stock panel so you could just refabric the stock panel? I would definetly use epoxy to reattach the rivets you have to dremel off. Just make sure it's plastic safe. I know there are some strong epoxies that will eat through certain materials. I don't think you have to use screws. I won't be attempting this until next week(I'm on vacation then). Let me know how things come out if you get to it soon. Please take pics and keep me updated. Thanks, Good luck, and I hope to hear from you soon.

I just redid my door panels today because I didn't use enough fabric adhesive the first time. The super glue did work fine, however this time I used epoxy. When I used super glue last time I accidently dripped some on my passengers door right in the middle of the blue and it looked like a baby-batter splatter on my door. Be careful or you'll have a lot of explaining to do. The only drawback to epoxy that I see is drying time.

Good to know. Thanks, Synernut!

Thanks Synernut....How would you rate the process on a scale of 1 to 10 on the complexity of the mod?
synernut 10-12-2005 12:31 AM

I would rate it a 4 or 5. I redid my door panels last weekend because I didn't use enough adhesive the first time.
