DVD: Le Mans or Grand Prix

I know both of these are very good movies. (might end up getting both)
Just wanted to hear which one you guys prefered the most...
Le Mans with Steve McQueen
or
Grand Prix with James Gardner

Considering that Grand Prix isn't on DVD yet, you'd be hard pressed to get it. Both are awesome movies, I like the Formula 1 era that Grand Prix was filmed in.

LeMans, hands down. It's a purer experience.

Agreed, but i'd say Grand Prix is a more entertaining movie. The cinematography, editing, sound, and direction are superior, but come on - it's John Frankenheimer!
I pre-ordered LeMans on DVD and got it the day it was released. I'm waiting to see what happens with Grand Prix on DVD. i was very disappointed with Le Mans' lack of supplemental material, especially when Speedvision/Speed Channel (forget which it was at the time) had shown the film along with a making of documentary hosted by Steve's son Chad McQueen quite a while before the DVD was released. Too bad, because there were some great stories like the differences between working with the Ferrari & Porsche factories when they needed parts for the race cars. Good stuff. Why isn't this on the DVD?
Anyway, the absolute jewel of my collection is Grand Prix. i was very lucky to find a copy of it on LaserDisc a few years ago. A local LaserDisc shop was getting ready to go DVD-only, so they were getting rid of their remaning in-stock LDs. They had recently acquired a copy of Grand Prix from a private collection, and i managed to get it for only $20!
It's absolutely beautiful. Fantastic MGM/UA double disc set in a gorgeous gate-fold jacket. MGM consistently put out, in my opinion, the best looking US-Market LaserDiscs. The picture quality is amazing. Their film-to-video transfers and quality control during pressing were top-notch, only bested by JDM LaserDiscs.
Yes, even in the world of LaserDisc, the quality control of the Japanese product was consistently way ahead of the US market LDs. i have a few movies of which i own both the US market LD and the Japanese market LD, and when you play them back to back, you can totally see a difference in image quality and quality control. Many US-Market LDs look like they were pressed in a lumber mill, while Japanese LDs look like they were manufactured in a clean room!
Among US-market discs, MGM's were always the best looking and most consistent. 2001, North By Northwest, etc... And Grand Prix is no exception. If you also have a LaserDisc player, see if you can locate a copy of Grand Prix. You won't be disappointed!
Damn... i think this is the longest post i've made to NASIOC, and it's about movies. :D

I never had a LaserDisc player (or quality TV for that matter) that would allow me to compare the quality of one pressing of LD with that of another. However, I know from my modest audiophile stereo setup that the manufacturing of the media can make a huge difference in the quality of the playback.

<blasphemy>as a movie, LeMans blows.</blasphemy> The racing action isnt even that great, its mostly shots of the cars on the straights.
Im really really looking forward to Grand Prix coming out on DVD... (if it ever does?)
btw- the director of Grand Prix, John Frankenheimer, also directed Ronin (commonly referred to as one of the best all time car chase movies and one of my faves).
In interviews, he says that a lot of the shots and techniques used in Ronin are taken straight from his experience with Grand Prix

don't leave out "Winning" with paul Newman. a real race car driver. I like it alot better than Le Mans. I haven't seen Grand Prix.

I'm sure it's because Speed/Speedvision must own the rights to the documentary. I had forgotten about that - I remember seeing the documentary a few years back - it truely would have been a welcome addition to the DVD. I haven't seen Grand Prix in years - awaiting it's release.

Lotta people go through life doing things badly. Racing's important to men who do it well. When you're racing, it's life. Anything that happens before or after is just waiting.

I've only seen Le Mans...would love to see Grand Prix if and when it comes out on DVD.
You have to really really love motorsports to like this movie. I know very few people that would be able to make it through the entire movie. Very little dialogue. Girlfriends will not appreciate it, arguments will ensue, doghouse will be occupied that night...not that im speaking from experience or anything. :furious:

Steve McQueen was a pretty good driver, too, I believe he ran several pro races, and did quite well. Not as well as Newman, but he was still pretty good.

Amen. I think that, cinematically, "Le Mans" might be one of the purest, most single-minded entertainments devised. It has all of the elements: hero, rivalry, anti-hero, tragedy, triumphant ending (you think) and love interest, all the elements that are present in "Grand Prix," only without the sheen that is also present in the latter. Both are predictable, but "Le Mans" is less so because it seems more like reality than "Grand Prix."
Any movie and its excellence is subjective, but for me, "Grand Prix" borders on the unwatchable. It could have used a better editor, and fewer fatalistic glances into the camera by this character or that character. The racing scenes are excellent, to be sure, but the racing scenes in "Le Mans," despite John Frankenheimer's unquestioned ability to put you there, are extraordinary.
Certainly, "Grand Prix" is a subjectively better Hollywood-type entertainment, without question. And my wife also prefers "Le Mans," which means that I married well.

Le Mans is a fantastic film that is using footage taken in the real race, quite exceptional considering the technology back then.
Some of the crash scenes are far too real, for example the slow mo major crash featured was driven by one of the best sports car drivers of his day, david piper. David lost his foot in that crash, it wasnt some computer generated scene that doesnt quite look right, it was a proper crash they setup which caused more damage than intended, it was still retained in the film.
Grand Prix is a bit mickey mouse by comparison, a bit lightweight for my liking. ;)

I really liked GP but I have yet to see LeMans. I've heard it is a good movie though. I put my name on that amazon list for the GP dvd like 2 years ago and it still hasn't come out.

As much as I love both Le Mans and Grand Prix (between the two definately go for Le Mans) neither one can do justice to some of the documentaries made of that era.
My favorite would have to be The Speed Merchants which sadly isn't out on DVD.

Of course, but i'm sure CBS (Viacom) could have negotiated something with Speed (Fox (News Corp.)).

Can't go wrong either way. Buy LeMans now and get Grand Prix when it comes out on DVD :D
These two movies are great compared to that POS Stalone put out.
Like McQueen, I heard that Gardner was a pretty good driver. Did most of his own driving and stunts till his insurance carrier saw the fire scene at Brands Hatch.

Hmmm. So folks with DVD recorders, who aren't fans of extras, commentary and all that jazz and have a high-quality digital cable feed, can indeed have "Grand Prix" on DVD. :D
Kevin
p.s. There's no "d" in "Garner." There's Ava Gardner, but it's James Garner.
