Ebay Wing opinions. part 1

Ebay Wing opinions.
Anybody ever bought this wing from this vendor. Close to the real thing?

This has been asked 3 times in the last 2 weeks. All of these sellers have access to the same dropshipper, and all have the same wing.

Yes, the wing is of good quality, and is very nicely painted and matches well. There are some monior differences in the wing that you'd only notice by looking very closely (they aren't quality difference, but differences in how its designed). I personally bought one about 3 months ago.

There are some on here who will tell you it won't look good - make sure you ask them if they've personally seen it. I'll bet they haven't.
ohHello 03-29-2005 03:17 PM

i have the stock wrx spoiler, will this use the same holes? Or will more holes have to be dirilled?. thanks
mcowger 03-29-2005 03:44 PM

I never got a for sure answer on this. My WRX didn't have a stock wing, so I didn't couldn't compare. However, looking at another WRX, the holes DO appear to be in the same location.
subaru mike 03-29-2005 05:15 PM

I thought that the STI used 17 holes? I might be wrong...
mcowger 03-29-2005 05:23 PM

The real STi wing uses 17 holes. This is a replica.
ohHello 03-29-2005 05:55 PM

so replica fits? i tihnk the wrx is 8 holes? Are the holes int he same spot?
-thanks
wrxmechman 03-29-2005 08:59 PM

How well did the wing fit and does it shake and flutter at speed?
mcowger 03-29-2005 10:36 PM

It shakes as much the real one does.
03twrx 03-30-2005 01:08 PM

Woah, I would be interested in buying one of those spoilers.
ebeck 03-30-2005 01:22 PM

Well actually that pic is of the OEM wing not the replica. I got one of those about a year ago. It was auto earth replica. The quality of material was good. The seam was way off. On one side it lined up well but the other side was way off. I actually had to bondo it in and then sand out a new leading edge. I could put a credit card between the seam on one side.

It looks good from 5 feet. Get up close and you can tell. The material is also not near as flat or smooth as OEM. The top of the wing is wavy. At least on the AutoEarth version. They no longer sell them buy used the exact same add and picture. I bet they are all the same from the same factory. They come from HongKong.

Notice the lack of seam here. I had to eliminate it to amke it look good.

Spend the extra $200 and get OEM or look in Private classifieds. That is my advice.
mcowger 03-30-2005 02:40 PM

I respectfully disagree. Mine was painted just as well as my OEM one currently is, with no strange waviness. Its also fit perfectly. Perhaps there is some variance in production, but at least not all come like that, and perhaps they've mad eimprovements since ebeck bought his
ebeck 03-30-2005 02:46 PM

Yes, this is true and a definite possiblilty. Got a close up of the seam on both sides of the car? People can judge for our them selves. People have different ideas about what good is.
mcowger 03-30-2005 04:20 PM

Best closeup I have (I've since sold the wing) is here:
http://gallery.cowger.us/albums/album11/IMG_0432.jpg

I don't have one for the other side, but it was about the same.
Here's my car with the 'real' wing. I know its not a closeup, but it looks like the real wing actually has a larger seam:

wrxmechman 03-30-2005 10:35 PM

mcowger, how come you sold the replica and got a real OEM wing?
mainevent212 03-31-2005 01:49 AM

why does everyone want to swap an STI wing on a regular WRX? i dont understand it...it's so misrepresenting
mcowger 03-31-2005 10:40 AM

wrxmechman - because I found someone locally who wanted to trade. I got what I wanted, and he got what he wanted, and then I got to save the $300 or so I spent on the wing when I sold it.

mainevent - fine, enjoy your wingless WRX. I didn't. The STi wing looks nice to my eyes, which is really all that matters. Once you have a hand in making my car payments, I'll give a rip what you or anyone else thinks about 'misrepresenting'.
ebeck 05-10-2005 02:55 PM
why does everyone want to swap an STI wing on a regular WRX? i dont understand it...it's so misrepresenting
Well yes it can be. I actually have a JDM STi. Here in the US. It is bugeyed too. That wing was actually JDM Ver7 LTD before it was ever a USDM ver 8. The bugeye model. It is actually model correct for Bugeyes of th4e STi variant. Of course a full JDM driveline and interior and suspension is of more importance as that is what malkes an STI an STI. My whole car is badged STI. It actually is one. People here in the US forget the STI has been around for years and years before it came here. It looked very different along the way including the bugeeye STI. Yes it did exist. Yes it had that wing. What is a PITA is educating people all the time. Americans are soo lame and so unknowlegable about cars in general. Well cept for saying, "That thang got a Hemi in it". Even then they have no idea what that means.

Aaaaanyhow, what is mis-representation, is badging a car STI when it is still a WRX. That said, putting a wing on is, well..... just putting a wing on. If it still says WRX there is no mis-representation is there.
mcowger 05-10-2005 03:00 PM

Ooops.

I agree with you. When I swap trunks this weekend, I'm going to pop off the STi badge, because I don't drive a STi.

Personally, I just like the looks of the STi spoiler over the WRX one, what's why I'm swapping trunks :)
silverF4turbo 05-10-2005 03:43 PM

meh I wouldn't all out call that a JDM STI..... but having an STI spoiler on a WRX isn't "misrepresenting" either
ebeck 05-11-2005 01:36 AM
mcowger, how come you sold the replica and got a real OEM wing?
You did? Hmmmm, the plot thickens.

silverF4turbo, minus the RHD, mine sure is man. And I have those parts available. Just don't want to drive on that side. http://forums.nasioc.com/forums/showthread.php?t=700208

I'll be straight. My Ebay replica is ok. That is about it. For some it may be ok. For me it is not even close. I would not do it again. In fact I am taking mine off.
Kaze 05-11-2005 10:19 AM

stock WRX - 4 bolts
stock STi - 12 bolts (so i heard)

i personally dont trust that cause my friend with a suby needed holes drilled for his CF wing, the guy misdrilled and his trunk leaks now when it rains. no matter how professional you are, there's always room for mistake. i also have this other friend that get a replica wing like the one you guys are talkin about, if you look closely, its a little off with the curves of the wing and the trunk itself. that replica wing cost $300+? just go and spend like $100 and get a trunk swap. there are plenty of STi owners that want to get rid of their wing. i got my wing swapped about 2 weeks ago and love it.
mcowger 05-11-2005 11:15 AM
You did? Hmmmm, the plot thickens.
Yes, I did. And explained it:
wrxmechman - because I found someone locally who wanted to trade. I got what I wanted, and he got what he wanted, and then I got to save the $300 or so I spent on the wing when I sold it.
It was cheaper for me to get the OEM STi wing.
ebeck 05-11-2005 04:19 PM

So wait, you had a replica STi, someone wanted the replica, they had the OEM STI wing, so you traded the replica for the OEM one?
mcowger 05-11-2005 04:30 PM

Heh, no.

In order of occurence:

1) I buy wingless WRX.
2) I decide same day I want an STi wing.
3) Not knowing about the ability to swap trunks, I purchase that same night a replica eBay wing.
4) I read i-club/nasioc and realize you can swap trunks.
5) 2 days later, I find a guy to swap with.
6) 4 days later, replica wing arrives
7) Placed replica wing on car, examine it. Decide its pretty good quality.
8) 2 days later, drive up to LIC in Novato and swap trunks with STi owner (paid him $50 + my trunk for his trunk + wing)
9) Sell replica wing and recoup my $300 bucks.

Make sense? :).
ebeck 05-11-2005 06:52 PM

Got it. Decide its pretty good quality? But not OEM quality you'd say? Worth $200 more to get the OEM now that you have seen both up close?
mcowger 05-11-2005 07:09 PM

I'd say its just shy of OEM quality (90% there). I wouldn't say that its worth $200 more to get the OEM one.

Given the relative ease in my area (Bay Area, practically the WRX tuning Mecca) of finding a swap, I would say its a better choice to swap if you can, not because of quality but because its cheaper. However, if you live in Bum****, WI and there are no STis within 200 miles, then the replica is a perfectly valid option, and the one I would choose over the OEM wing.
