How high a wattage bulb will hurt lights?
OK, I got some higher wattage bulbs and I DO realize that I'll need to use relays on them so that I don't burn-up my harness. However, will 90 watt bulbs brown the reflectors? I didn't realize they were higher wattage when I got them, but I still want to use them.

do a search in this forum......
this has been discussed before.....the way I see it, it also depends on the brand.....i have nokyas, no harness no probs for about a year.

Yeah, it's been discussed a whole lot, but it doesn't seem like anybody ever really reaches a conclusion on what's harmful and what's not. People ave posted and said lights were great, only to post a month later and say that their harness fried. The bulbs I got are 90/100 Cuzos. I didn't realize how high a wattage they were when I bought em, but still want to give em a try.

Extra-tasty-krispy
I've seen my friend's fog reflector go "Cajun-style", and I've seen it on other Scoobies just out on the road. In fact, there was a GC8 style 2.5 at our last meet who wasn't with us, who had browned fogs. I'm running the stock wattage H3s and H4s.

Erm, OK, so who HAS used brighter bulbs for a significant amount of time and still has silver (not brown) reflectors?
| Snowphun | 12-03-2001 09:36 PM |
Sorry haven't used higher wattage bulbs, but I can say that 90 watt low beams are simply too much, and may get you hassled by the man, but will certainly get you flashed by alot of annoyed people. Keep the higher wattages to the high beams!
| imprezadan | 12-03-2001 09:42 PM |
Yeah, I thought about that. I have allready recieved s##t for STOCK wattage Yellowstars.

yup
higher wattage will turn them brown

Oh, wonderful, so does anyone want to buy j-import Cuzo bulbs from me? Heh.

I had high wattage fogs, they turned my reflector brown......as for the heads, i got those bulbs for a year, no discoloration or melting harnesses.

Don't sell them I run Hella 80/100 H4s in my headlights with no problems. I ran them in my '92 Legacy, my '98 Impreza L, my parents '89 Grand Caravan (whatever bulb they need, maybe H4). I've upgraded the wiring harness in my '01 RS. In NONE of the above cars was there any discoloration of the reflectors. In the ones with stock wires there was no melting. I put 30k miles on each the Legacy and '98 Impreza with 24/7 headlight use. No problems. My RS has 22k miles with no problems.
I believe Subie Gal runs 90/100w bulbs in her RS without a problem.
And no, you don't get flashed all of the time. Or rather, I don't. One night when I drove across WA I got flashed a billion times by people I was passing going my direction, and a couple of times by people going the other way. I only attribute that to a bunch of people who aren't used to seeing expensive cars with bright headlights. (Not that the RS was all that expensive, but there aren't many HID equipped BMW/Merced/Acura/etc. over in Eastern WA to burn the retinas of the average Joe)
Fog lights, that's another story. They're gold/blue colored now from running 100w bulbs.

well the fogs are an easy issue: replace fog light units with an aftermarket such as Hellas..: better beam pattern and will take higher watts

ATX25RS- What wattage Nokya bulbs are you running?
| ATX25RS | 12-04-2001 06:40 PM |
55/65=>90/100 i dont know if that is performs like or wattage.....either way it is a moot point, I just checked them because I just ordered some Polarg VIP HID Plasma Purple bulbs......the driver side connection is melted...n odamage to the harness or taps, but the plastic is melted......I think this is because of water though (cold rain water hitting hot connection = bad) i am not talking about regular rain, I parked under a roof runoff drain....(unknowingly of course) the lights still work full brighness......last time i checked two weeks ago...they were fine....after 11 months....

How much are the harnesses going for and where can you get them?
| remarcable | 12-04-2001 11:34 PM |
I think the general consensus was that with anything over 80 watts you risk melting the harness and burning the reflector.
Even at 80 watts some bulbs run hotter than others.

Why do you guys need so much light, all the time? Do you live in the boonies? Why not just up your high beams, or add driving lights? Unless you aim them into the ground, 100 watt low beams are going to bother other people. Ever wondered what would happen if you got in an accident and the other driver complained about being blinded by your lights? That's be a fun one to explain...

I live in california, and in the boonies of california and everyone has beamers with HID's and blindingly bright lights. I want mine as bright as possible. I want them to know im coming and I want to see the road 10 miles ahead of me like it was daylight out!

Why do I want bright lights? Because I hit a cow due to the crappy stock lights on my old Legacy. That's why.

My friend had one of her bulb connectors melt with 80/100 bulbs. I know this as a fact, since I saw the melted plastic. It wasn't a big problem, in fact I was able to free up the connector pin, and it now works again, but we switched her back to the stock bulbs for the time being.
On the other hand, I've been running the same 80/100 Hella bulbs for 9 months in my WRX, and I ran them for 3 years in my Legacy GT without any problems. So the answer is - you'll probably be OK with 80/100, but it depends on your karma.

I used Hiper fake HID bulbs for 2 weeks (80/85watt) and some of my wires melted. I switched to Sylvania Cool Blues (stock wattage) and guess what.....I can see BETTER now. I had to fiddle with the wiring for a while to get it to work again. Ultimately the harness will probably have to be be replaced. I am never using higher than stock wattage again. What a waste of time and money!

Burning the conenctors
I melted my connector with the stock harness and stock lights, and I saw the other one almost melted too. Now the one that is melted, the headlight is at 1/2 power (brown looking). I just bought upgraded bulbs 55W/100W but was wondering how hard it is to replace the harness.
Also what king of aftermarket fogs would you recommend. Hella 500's Amber for 59.99 for kit with harness from http://www.4by4connection.com/hel500drivli.html
sounds good to me. Will they fit into our cars, though

Hella 500s fit fine. You might want to get a Kartboy bracket though.

I had driven around for over a year with aftermarktet plasma blue bulbs... then one night I did a nice Mt. Hamilton run and I had to use my high beams lot... ( I wired my fogs to stay on when my highs turn on.) Well after near an hour of high beam action my harness melted... and that also blew a fuse. No biggie. A $2.15 part at Kragen fixed the harness. It was a new h4 type harness. And a new fuse. Also too, at night with no other illumination other than the moon... blue lights suck. They actually put out less illumination that stock. So I got a catz zetta system and I am happy with it.
