Element Time Attack STI 1.20 Summit Point Video
I was at Summit Point this weekend running the NASA TTU class to finish up testing for Limited class Time Attack. One of the major limitations in the Limited class is that we have to run tires with a wear rating of 100 or higher so I chose Toyo RA1s to test with. Our other car running the same tires but with 100 whp more lapped Summit with me driving at 1.23 so Im really happy weve got the new STI handling well. My goal was really to only hit 1.22 on the RA1s and 1.20 on Hoosiers so Im ecstatic we did it on the tires we have to race with. We placed first overall and 1st in TTU but there really wasnt much competition except a Monte Carlo stock car. This is an unofficial time as Im still waiting on transponder data but I believe we hit a 1.20 on the third lap.

Engine Modifications:
Element Hydra EMS
Element Hydramist
Element GT52 Bolt-on Turbocharger
Element Header
Element Fuel Surge Tank
Aeromotive A1000 fuel pump
TurboSmart E-Boost 2
Clutch Masters STG4 Clutch
1000cc Low Impedance Fuel injectors
FMIC
TBE
Suspension:
JIC Element Spec FLT-RS
6 Gun Ball Joint Extenders
Wheels and Tire:
Prodrive GC06 17 X 9.5 et 44
Toyo RA1 255/40-17
Brakes:
Stock (Lines, fluid, pads, Ti backing plates)
RCE Kool Brake Kit
These tires are really easy to over drive so I had to run a few hot laps and a lap to cool the tires then another couple hot laps. Youll see what happens when they get a little too hot at the end of the video.
Thanks,
Phil

Congrats phil, a 1:20 is hauling some serious ass!!
oh, and do you know how much air that car displaces when you go by at 140? a TON my car shook when you passed me during your practice!!!
haha, congrats again, and i cant wait to see, hear, and brace as you fly be my lil' 944 again!!

Congrats Phil!
If you don't mind sharing, how much camber did you run up front and what are your wheel / roll rates. This was in the dry correct?
Did you get the issue with the rotors / Hawk pads worked out?
Good luck at Super Street!

Javid,
It was definitely dry this weekend and the temps in the 60s. I don't want to get into specifics here about my current settings but also it's nearly impossible to find level ground at Summit to accurately measure camber. I pretty much relied on tire temps and when I thought they could be slightly suspect like on the passenger side, since the track rotates clockwise, I marked the tires with white shoe polish to see how much tire was being used. I gained 2 second by finding the tire pressure sweet spot, dialing in a better camber setting on the front, and finding the differential setting that suited my driving style best and the available tracking. The ball joint extenders are definitely doing the trick up front and the car feels very much planted there. I need to work on the rear setup but I just dont have any more time before Time Attack.
Ive found so much grip with the new setup that even with RA1s I need to go back to drawing board with the suspension configuration. Throwing a better driver out of the equation I know I can get the car to go another 2 seconds quicker on the RA1s without adding any power to the car. There were definitely sections of the track that were intimidating me this weekend and Im not sure why. Turn 3 for some reason I just couldnt get comfortable and find the sweet line like I could in our other car. I was also a little gun shy going down the shoot and felt a little slow through 10 coming onto the main straight. It could also be the tires compared to the last event there where I was on Hoosiers. The RA1s at this pace just arent planted and its hard to nail your line as the car drifts much more. If money was on the line the Hoosiers are the way to go but at $1000 a weekend its a little pricey for me to run them.
We didnt have many brake issues this weekend given how used the pads were. The titanium backing plates and the RCE Kool Brake Kit have controlled the brake temps enough that I didnt have that extreme wear Ive been getting over the last handful of track events. My rotors have been cracked for the last two events but they are still relatively small and not yet at the edge of the rotor. I would never have been able to run the last 3rd of the brake pad material before the brake ducts and titanium backing plates.
Thanks,
Phil

Great video. You were definitely flying. Seemed like you were constantly correctling the car through turns.
You should post some video of you passing people to give a better impression of just how fast you were. :)

Seriously it was a little freaky running in HPDE 3 for practice as there was so much traffic. I must have passed 10 cars on the front straight alone  Everyone's a decent driver in 3 running solid lines so it was fine but to put things into perspective your average HPDE 3 driver is running in low 1.30 range and I was running 1.24s in the practice session dicing through traffic. It would be fine if there werent 60 cars out there. It was nuts
Ill see if I have video from the first TT session.
I was definitely driving the RA1s hard so the car was very loose. Also at this speed and grip the track is very bumpy and would often upset the car.
Thanks,
Phil

Yeah, sometimes it was hard for me to deal with traffic, so it must have been REALLY hard for you. Not trying to brag, but I was one of the faster cars in HPDE3 and you went by me like I was stopped. It was great. As you came flying up on slower cars, I'm sure you had a lot of, "Give the point-by. Please give the point-by! PLEASE GIVE THE POINT-BY NOW!"

We are done testing locally for the season so the next outing for this car will be the Super Street Time Attack at Button Willow California on November 8th. It will also make it's way later that month to the Subiefest Time Attack in Seattle.
Thanks,

The Super Street Time Attack is open to the public and free to spectate. Competing is by invite only or through a regional qualifier. We finished in 2nd place last year and were invited again this year.

We just removed the temporary tags so the car is very early in it's development stage and I wanted to test our new GT52 turbocharger. We already know what the GT65 is capable of. Now with that said we are at a point where we can make more power with the GT65 but to be honest I don't think our chassis is setup to handle it yet. I'm not sure what I'm going to do for Time Attack at this point. I would hate to add another 70 whp and upset the handling package we currently have. The car may end up slower by doing so.
Thanks,
Phil

Understeer is not at all an issue with our current setup. The RA1s will always screech when used to their full potential. With our current setup we can run less than 3 degrees of camber in the front.

Good stuff, Phil. What size Hoosiers do you guys run on those 9.5" wheels? 255s on a 9.5" wheel is kind of a waste, so I'm guessing your "real" tires are bigger?
