F1 coverage

Not all details, but good news:

US F1 coverage gets green light

Speed Channel, formerly know as Speed Vision, will again be home to Formula One racing in the United States, announcing it has reached an agreement to air live practice, qualifying and race coverage most events in 2002.

"Formula One racing is an important part of Speed Channel's core programming," said network President Jim Liberatore. "Having just moved past the 50-million household mark, I think it is important that we continue to demonstrate a commitment to being the premier television destination for all motor sports fans, and our F1 package certainly supports that philosophy."

Veteran broadcaster Rick DeBruhl will lead the cast of Speed Channel on-air talent with analysis from David Hobbs and former F1 mechanic Steve Matchett. Peter Windsor will provide reporting from the paddock.

At least they got Peter Windsor. The man knows his F1.

Here's hoping they get Derek Bell in for some commentary. I miss the days of he and John Watson arguing about whose a bigger idiot on track.

America deserves Murray Walker too!

To back that up, this is from Speed Channel's website (still www.speedvision.com):

SPPED Channel Announces F1 Broadcast Lineup

By: Eric Mauk

Charlotte, N.C., February 25

SPEED Channel will again be home to Formula One racing in the United States, announcing it has reached an agreement to air live practice, qualifying and race coverage for nearly the entire 17-race Grand Prix schedule in 2002.

Veteran broadcaster Rick DeBruhl will lead the cast of SPEED Channel on-air talent, calling play-by-play, with analysis from former F1 driver David Hobbs and former F1 mechanic Steve Matchett. Peter Windsor will provide reporting from the paddock.

SPEED Channel's Formula One season kicks off Thursday, Feb. 28 with practice from the Grand Prix of Australia at 9 p.m. (ET). SPEED Channel will provide live race coverage of 16 of the 17 events, with enhanced coverage of the United States Grand Prix. Most races will be replayed on same-day tape at 10 p.m. (ET) -- check local listings.

SPEED Channel, the nation's fastest growing sports cable network, is the first and only 24-hour cable network devoted exclusively to motor sports and the human fascination for speed. In addition to extensive original NASCAR programming, SPEED Channel is home to much of the world's marquee racing events including CART, F1, Classic Cars, LeMans, the American LeMans Series, World Rally and car shows from around the globe. Currently seen in more than 50 million homes, SPEED Channel was acquired by Fox Cable Networks Group in July 2001.

David Hobbs is also excellent, and Steve Matchett was a wellspring of technical details and inside information that made watching the cars even cooler. He once made an observation about camber and how the cars hit the curbing/corner, that explained exactly why some cars were fast, and some weren't even though they should have been. I won't miss Derek Daly at all, but I will miss Sam Posey.

Kevin, Kevin, Kevin...you don't miss "Lookadiss! Lookadiss!"? What's wrong with you, man? :D

Actually, I haven't missed Derek in the couple of seasons that he's been gone, either. Nor am I going to particularly miss Sam Posey. While Derek Bell and John Watson might argue about who's the bigger idiot on track, Sam and David Hobbs just sounds like an argument to determine who's the bigger idiot in the booth.

Too bad that they switched Bob Varsha over to CART. I've always liked him, and I think the F1 broadcasts will be missing something without him.

Looks like the USGP must be going to ABC again, as well. Speed Channel lists live coverage of 16 of the 17 rounds, with "enhanced" coverage of the USGP. Sounds just like last year...show it on ABC live, then on Speed Channel a week later with additional camera footage. I heard ABC's coverage sucked last year, but I wouldn't know, 'cause I was in the stands! :)

No Sam Posey.. Damn.. Yes, I actually mean that. He cracked me up, and I'll miss him..

One vote for "thank God that Varsha is gone".. Can't stand that guy. I heard "inaugural United States Grand Prix" a jillion times too many. I guess with Hobbs, Matchett, and Windsor in the mix it'll not be too different..

With Speed's track record of new commentators (that POS from WRC), I'm a lil' concerned about this new guy.. If I hear "you'd be hard pressed to find a right turn at a NASCAR track" imma goin' to Charlotte and takin' heads..

Replayed on same day tape @ 10 pm? That's a bummer... I always liked getting up at 7:00 on Sunday mornings to watch the races and to make a big breakfast... was kinda like a ritual for me. :(

Oh well, my girlfriend always hated Sunday mornings on F1 season. At least she'll be happy now :)

Mike M 02-26-2002 12:23 PM

Tim, I think you misread that...
SPEED Channel will provide live race coverage of 16 of the 17 events, with enhanced coverage of the United States Grand Prix. Most races will be replayed on same-day tape at 10 p.m. (ET) -- check local listings.
I think that they will be running the broadcast TWICE each Sunday...once live, and once taped. So, don't get the girlfriend's hopes up too much! Plus, if she's like my wife, eventually she might start getting up with you and watching the races. Hell, my wife knows more about F1 now than most of my friends. She even met Mika Hakkinen at last year's USGP!
TimStevens 02-26-2002 12:36 PM

Ahh... oops. They're broadcasting the Australia race at 10:00 only, so I thought they were just skipping live broadcasts. But, it just so happens that 10:00 is live for the Australia race :)

My girlfriend actually likes F1 now too, she just hates getting up early on Sunday. She's always bugging me to tape the races so that we can sleep in... she just doesn't understand it's not the same on tape ;)

before hearing the commentator line-up, i saw david hobbes walking down the street from a resturant to his honda dealership (less than a mile from my house) and i thought to myself, 'i wonder if he's going to be on speedvision in a few days....'

guess the answer is yes.

and i'm also for the 'down with varsha' vote! i can't stand him either... he didn't seem to bring much of anything to the races if you ask me.

{edit}
i also got my girlfriend into it last year when i made her watch the australian gp. she keeps asking me "when's f1 start? how many more days till the first race?" etc.

i love it! :D

I am going to miss Sam Posey. He is a very nice and knowledgeable man. I met him, David Hobbs, Steve Matchett, and Derick Bell at Indy and the Rennsport Reunion, Limerock. Great guys. I think that Sam may be out due too Parkinsons Disease, although he still performs well. I wish him the best...Rob "GQ"
TimStevens 02-26-2002 02:48 PM

Yeah, I noticed he looked a little shakey sometimes during the broadcasts and was wondering if that was why :( Best wishes to him and his family...

-tim
Mike M 02-26-2002 02:50 PM

Well, I don't have anything personally against Sam Posey, and definitely wish him the best if it is Parkinson's that is keeping him from returning. Guess I just didn't really like his style of broadcasting....
johnfelstead 02-26-2002 03:01 PM

Damn, Sam has Parkinsons, that sucks.

I have never seen Speedvision F1 coverage but i have some footage of Sam racing back in 1972 and being interviewed in my favourite video of all time, "the speed merchants" which follows Mario Andretti etc racing in the 1972 sports car world championship.

Anyway, sam is absolutely hilareous the way he describes the diference between the drivers and cars in the prototype class and the production class. Top bloke. :D

I have seen Derek Daley comentate, he was crap.
GQ 02-26-2002 04:49 PM

Actually he (Sam) is funny. He seemed more interested in talking to my girlfriend, for some reason. Actually he is a nice guy. When Sam signed an autograph for me, his Parkinsons was very evident. I felt bad for asking him after I saw that he had Parkinsons, but he was very happy to sign it (program) for me. I spent most of my time talking to David Hobbs. David was trying to get Matchett into the conversation, and I was like, who is Steve Matchett (back in 2000). I felt bad after my girlfriend told me that I appeared to ignore Matchett. I had no idea who he was. Now that I know, I have been slapping myself upside the head...Rob "GQ"

The chance are no Bob or Sam. Sam probably because of his medical problem and not did cause his doing CART this year.
The major chance is Rick DeBruhl taking over Bob spot but rest stay's the same.
Also it look's like Speed Channel will be carrying the CORR series this year. For John if don't know what it is.
The CORR series is what Rallycross is to rallying/WRC.When it come to the Desert Off-Road racing here in the States.
Those same type vehicles that run in the Desert off-road. Run on a road course made of dirt instead of tramac.
It's pretty good stuff really.
sirfrankwilliams 02-27-2002 01:27 AM

Mr Hobbs took a liking to my girl too. Boy, those TV guys sure like the ladies.
Check out the jolly belly on him! I liked his so much I've been working on developing my own :p
stratos 02-27-2002 11:30 AM

yum yum

mmmm, she's tasty I'dd rather talk to her too!! :D
tifosi77 02-28-2002 04:12 AM

I wish that we could just get the UK team i believe that it is Martin Brundle and James Clark (replacing Murray Walker) I heard Murray and Martin while watching F1 in the UK(two years ago) and hands down they blow away the anouncers here. Something about the accent makes everything sound correct.
donjuan 02-28-2002 08:29 AM

You can't beat Murray.

'and I interrupt myself to bring you this....'

"Only a few more laps to go and then the action will begin, unless this is the action, which it is."

"...the lead is now 6.9 seconds. In fact it's just under 7 seconds"

"The Italian GP at Monaco..."

"Alesi is in second place and Hill is in second place..."
TimStevens 02-28-2002 08:33 AM

Hey everyone... speaking of coverage... don't forget to watch/tape the practice tonight. I think it's 11-12pm :)

donjuan 02-28-2002 08:34 AM

Yep, 11 pm Eastern...WOOO!
GQ 02-28-2002 08:55 AM

can't wait...
Dr. WOT 02-28-2002 11:47 AM

Varsha was great in the old ESPN days, but lately he was letting Sam and David ramble on too much. What the old SpeedVision team was lacking was a play-by-play guy to call the action -- they were all color commentators who told stories, or would start waxing on some speculation about this driver or that car. It would get very boring, and the last thing a F1 race needs is a boring crew of commentators, because there can be some considerable lulls in the race.

Rich DeBrule has done F1 in the past, and is attetive to what's happening during the race. However, he definitely lacks Varsha's history of races watched, and also if I recall has a number of very annoying pronounciations. But I'm giving him the benefit of the doubt.

Hopefully the new crew has a good chemistry, because they do look like they each have a specific role and will adhere to it.
WRSport 02-28-2002 02:57 PM

Wooohooo only 8 more hours!~
Mike M 02-28-2002 03:06 PM

Well, the buzz I just got from an "insider" that I know is to watch Sauber...he thinks they might even step up and grab a victory this year! People are saying that Felipe Massa is fast, and Nick Heidfeld has proven himself quite capable as well. This gentleman may just know of what he speaks....
