Few pictures from STPR . . . part 1

T Deneka 06-16-2004 04:49 PM

Few pictures from STPR . . .
Here are a few pictures I took at STPR a couple weekends ago. I took like 200 pics with the 10D so if you (or a friend) ran and are interested in pics, I may have some at water crossing and/or Colton Point.

Car # 912, Last Ditch Racing
Any shots of "Tulip," LDR's faithful #912 2.5 RS? We are nasioc long-time members, finished 8th in Sherwood Forest ClubRally and were running as fastest non-turbo car in ProRally when the engine went, "Gronk, clonk," and stalled in a tight bend on SS5. Cloud of white smoke signaled demise of yet another engine and end of our rally. Dropped valve, who knows what else broke. Only the teardown will tell....

Ciao for now,

Co-Driver and Chief Dead Engine Mourner

I'd be interested in what you have of car #931, blue 1st gen Impreza. Particularily at Colton Point. After being at this event for the last 24 years and running it for 5 years, this was my best ever finish, 13th OA in Pro. Just wish it hadn't been so sloppy. I would have driven faster but couldn't push as much as I would have liked, didn't want to break the car, then I wouldn't have been able to run Baie in 2 weeks. TIA

I do have one from the side at Colton, but it is a little blurred and grainy. For some reason I used no flash in the dark-dark woods. Here it is though:

EDIT: Here is the Link

Now this link may not work either . . .

Aaaarrrrggghhhh!!

Where is a good place to host photos?????
T Deneka 06-17-2004 01:44 PM

Do not have #931, sorry.
bullseye17 06-18-2004 01:38 PM

Any of #91 Jon Bottoms Great Northern Motorsports?
T Deneka 06-21-2004 10:09 AM

I do have a couple of #91. I need to find a good host for these. Stand by . . . .
paultg 06-21-2004 12:35 PM

That first pic is sweet with the glowing rotor.
Kha0S 06-21-2004 03:42 PM

I have a few of LDR's Steel Tulip and Don's green beast in various levels of blur:

I just kept the shutter going thinking you were going to hit the ambulance at the end of SS1!! You could have at least clipped te blue EVO parked next to it!!! I need to find a place to host this series!!
RallyHawk 06-23-2004 08:15 PM

Any of car #95?? (silver WRX)
Love to see something of us before that tree jumped out in front of us...
WRXMaster 06-23-2004 08:42 PM

how fast did you guys hit that tree? if you dont mind me asking
T Deneka 06-23-2004 09:32 PM

Some are better than others. Feel free to use these photos at no charge, but please credit Tom Deneka if you do. Other requests, please give some unique identifyers on the front of your car as most at SS1 are head on through the water.

I hope these are posting up for everyone else. Please let me know if they are not.

Obviously I have much higher resolution copies if someone is really interested in a particular picture.

Sorry to the moderators if this is too many pics!!!!!
jprowland 06-23-2004 11:34 PM

I don't see the photos, just a bunch of question marks. Are these albums marked as private? I also tried cutting and pasting the link, no luck, just took me to the HP photo login screen. Creating a username and logging in didn't help.

If you don't mind letting people order their own prints directly from HP (ie, missing out on the "big profits" of rally photography :) ), try posting a link to the photo album instead of directly linking the photos. Also try Ofoto, no upload limit and you may be able to link the photos directly. And I'm pretty sure you can link directly to photos with Yahoo briefcase...

If you have pictures of our car (#866) you can email them directly to me at the email address below. Hi-res, if you don't mind sharing them.

Thanks...

Must've been pretty nasty if it managed to shake up Adrian, the shots I've seen still have him sitting in the car "getting his bearings" several minutes later...Ironic since at the beginning of SS3 he was telling me what a good safe driver Brad is :)

Hey, happens to the best of us...

No problem asking!
Not sure how fast we were really going, I do know I was shifting from 2nd to 3rd so we are guessing between 40-55 MPH. It all happened so quick I didn't even have time to lift off the gas!

Yeah, Adrian made me real nervous at first. Right after the car settled and we realized our heads were still on he was pretty much motionless-but moaning. All I was thinking about was to get us the hell out of the car in case it was on fire! (luckily it wasn't) He did sit there for a bit but luckily was fine. Other than whiplash, a mild concussion, a bruised jaw and a couple of broken teeth (both of us broke teeth) we made it out ok-the car is a different story...
The crazy thing is that I WAS driving pretty cautiously-only at about 80%. All I wanted to do was finish, and this crap happened-now I am 5/5 for dnf's at STPR :(
If I can suggest anything to ALL rallyists-wear a neck roll or a HANS type device. Adrian and I both wore neck rolls along with full-faced helmets and I swear that is what saved us. I am definitely getting a HANS now (once I pay for the car repair!)

By the way, is someone going to post those new pix that aren't showing up??

It made one helluva loud bang though. Then it went totally silent. We all ran like hell up the road then. I was glad to see you out of the car, but got worried Adrian was still in it. Though that was only like 10 seconds after it happened. By the time I got up to the car, he was still in it.

Is it fixable, or are you scraping it and starting new?

We did...about 11 miles into SS6 we went into a ! R5 > R3 a little too fast and rolled off the bank. It was moderately gentle, not even any bruising, and it was only a 1/2 roll onto the roof before hitting a small tree and stopping. About 3 cars later, Stempler/Amato in their G2 Golf pulled over behind our triangle and stopped with electrical problems (DNF), so at least we had a bit of company in the woods.

They couldn't pull the car out yet since the stage was being run again as SS9...I wanted to leave the triangles and OK sign, but the sweep guys took them down. In retrospect they should have left them up, as Rahill/Hladky rolled their G2 Golf off at the same spot and landed next to our car (a bit more violently, though, as I think they hit a tree pretty hard first.)

Turns out to be a pretty popular place for guys from Vermont to crash...Dan Cook/Bill Rhodes crashed the Datsun 510 in the same spot last year. We've got our own little exclusive club :)

So no harm other than to Tim's ego and pocketbook...A bit disappointing especially cause we did the same thing on SS4, except we didn't go all the way over and instead high-centered on the bank. We got time-barred out of the national and first club rallies. It's a shame, too, as Tim was running a very good rally except for those two hiccups.

I'll get pictures of the car up tonight, here's where it will be:
http://homepage.mac.com/jeremyrowland/photos/2004/stpr/index.html

A sad end to my last co-driving stint...I am retiring from co-driving due to a weak constitution (e.g., I keep getting carsick.) But I'm working on a plan to get back out in the woods soon as a driver :)

Photos are up now. There's even a blurry picture of us passing you guys, Brad. When we passed, I didn't even notice that the car was damaged! But I did write down the number and tell the stage finish where you were. I was the only co-driver to do that!

Enjoy...
