Debadging part 1

Debadging

Can someone tell me the best way to debadge the "Subaru", "Impreza", and "WRX" without damaging the paint off the trunk of the car.

Thanks

try www.scoobymods.com

I just waited for a hot day, back home thats everyday....or you can use a dryer to heat up the paste a bit..then use fishing line or dental floss to "saw" off the lettering....then use goo gone or goof off...to remove the residue....

Yep!

That's what I did. The hardest part is taking off the goo afterward... :o

Firstly, punch yourself in the head.

Secondly, don't debadge your car.

:D
mista618 03-07-2002 03:43 PM

all u need is a hair dryer and dental floss. heat it for a little bit and then just floss off the letters. for the extra glue remaining, just heat it up again and rub off... i didn't need to use any goo-gone or whatever... just trying to save u some money. by the way, it came out clean wit no scratches or anything
i eat meat 03-07-2002 04:15 PM

my butt floss, i mean dental floss broke in tiny little pieces, just heat them up.. and pull them off with your nails.. or have your gf or sister do it.. heat them up really good, or else you'll be left with a lot of residue. then just polish and wax..
rge_wrx 03-07-2002 04:35 PM

... and methyl hydrate is a great way to clean up that last remaining bit of glue.

P.S. I still really think that you shouldn't debadge, though...
Fat Ugly Soccer Mom 03-07-2002 10:48 PM

I did the dental floss and hair dryer method. It's cheap and effective. The floss kept breaking so I just doubled it and used kind of a sawing back and forth movement behind the letters. After the letters are off I blistered my poor thumb from rubbing so much. There was still some crap left after I was done though, so I compounded it and it came off fine. Have any of you taken the Subaru symbol off the front of the car?
dRu888 03-08-2002 01:25 AM

if you had something like a 98 or something and debadged it right NOW would it leave little subaru marks due to no sun/contact?
j/w since i was planning on debadging my 01 later on when i get a new wing
Rowdy2.5 03-08-2002 09:56 AM

I doubt it...

I doubt that you will see much of the goo left over. You can use "goo be gone" or "hand so soft" to take care of the mess the badges leave behind.
mista618 03-08-2002 04:19 PM

"hand so soft"? ...haha
Rowdy2.5 03-08-2002 05:33 PM

man!

I do think that's the name but I'm not 100% sure. Avon makes it and it was recommended by ...(i won't say who cause I don't want to make him feel dumb)

Front and Dealer Badge

I am assuming that the dealer badges are the same way to take off right? What would be a good way to take the front label off of the car? I have seen some at some sites I would like to get. It's hard to tell what shade the color is over the net, I was wondering if anyone has seen the Impreza blue emblem and if it matches the Blue Pearl color Subarus. Thanks.

Contact the KrazyRooster, he did his in blue to match his car. :p
yuzo 03-11-2002 06:28 PM

denature....that's what i call it but you can also try denatured alcohol. another one i used is floss and wd40. that works wonders.
REXboy 03-11-2002 07:22 PM

Some of you said to not debadge, what are your reasons for not wanting to do this?
Frederf 03-11-2002 07:40 PM

Because it looks like a debadged car.
REXboy 03-11-2002 07:42 PM

Obviously... Im asking whats wrong with that?
hoodwho 03-12-2002 01:25 AM

nothing is wrong with it. to each his own.

3M makes a badge adhesive remover for cars...
white can red letters...

carefull that when you pull on oneside of the letters it doesnt scratch the trunk with the other side...

oops. :D
Dinko81 03-12-2002 09:21 PM

to take off the front badge just wait for a hot day or heat up the oval then use a small flathead screwdriver to pry it up and out of the grill. i did this to mine patiently without leaving any scratches. unfortunately there is a circular hole in the middle of the oval area where the logo was mounted so i put my "s" from the rear badging on top of the hole and it looks pretty cool.
korpse 03-12-2002 11:34 PM

Just out of curiosity, why do people debadge their cars? I think the badges look pretty nice and the rear would look kind of plain without them...
Spooled 03-13-2002 02:16 AM

Hey, to each their own. I plan on debadging my car this sunday after I finish my h.w. (I like to think of this as rewarding myself, hehe). And plus, with all the weight you're taking off fromg the badges, you can gain like 50 HP to the wheels. That's the main reason as to why i'm doin' that. No stage 2 upgrade for me, just debadging and i'll be in the same ballpark.

Too much writing on the back of the car if you ask me... SUBARU + Model designation + Licence plate + Licence plate frame = Alot of stuff back there!!!

I just got rid of the SUBARU myself to even everything out better... the trunk lock hole asthetically ballances out the model designation on the left side of the trunk, and an odd number of items generally looks better in a composition

odyss3y 03-13-2002 12:18 PM

i debadged "S U B A R U" and "IMPREZA" so only "WRX" is left. i think it looks pretty nice. i used "Desolv it" to get the little bits of goo off, i couldnt get my blow dryer hot enough and i couldnt find my heat gun.
kensington 03-13-2002 12:44 PM

rge_wrx 03-13-2002 12:57 PM

That looks really good. Nice job.

But I must say that I prefer having all that badging on there.

Personal preference, I guess. But I do understand the desire to personalize one's vehicle... I understand it all too well...

intercooled 03-13-2002 10:48 PM

Not everyone likes all the flashy rhinestones ...I mean shiny badges that take up 60% of the truck. S U B A R U, WRX IMPREZA and for the lucky folks STI.

Its a bit much in IMO so I debadged and left only the WRX badge like in the picture above.

I debadged mine in the cold using a laminated SCCA card and Goof off. And no goof off did not damage the paint, its just like anything else simply do not over do it and keep soapy water on hand. Once removed I used mcquires 3 step polish and all turned out really well no shadowing or signs that badges were ever there.
juztin180 03-13-2002 11:38 PM

Yup

I did mine with a hairdryer and dental floss.

Took about 10 minutes.
wiped the left over goo off with just a touch of gasoline on a towel and then put soapy water on it.

then polished it w/ meguires and viola....no more bling bling silver emblem
ohsfan 03-15-2002 04:59 PM

You can add me to the debadged club.

Drawing from the experience of other members, I also used floss, a hairdryer, warm water, and some 3M adhesive remover to take off my letters.

I don't really think that I needed the 3M stuff though ($6). The heat and water seemed to do the trick. Hope it helps future debadgers.

Now I got the clean look going. :D
Thanks for the help guys.
jlogan9 03-15-2002 06:11 PM

I used to work in a body shop and I have taken off a bunch of moldings and badeges (I bet you can guess it was a Chevy dealership. who else puts moldings on everything). I found that the 3M stuff works the best to remove left over adhesive. I guess because 3M makes the double sided tape most manufactures use to put the stuff on.

In reality though there is no need to go out and buy the 3M stuff. Any of the solvents talked about in this thread should work. I suggest that you do not use wd40 though. Products such as this do not react favorably with paint.
Frederf 03-15-2002 06:18 PM

Anyone just leave the S U B A R U?
Rumplestilzchen 03-15-2002 11:45 PM

I'm with the de-badgers. Before, I couldn't find a way to keep from getting wax in the letters. I also couldn't find a way to clean between all of the letters. S-U-B-A-R-U and W-R-X Impreza are gone from mine. If someone can't tell what the car is, it doesn't mater because they're not going to know anyway.:)
