Functional hood scoop? part 1

logoguy 03-22-2004 11:39 AM

Functional hood scoop????
Ok I know i saw it around here some where where a guy made his hood scoop funtional by placing a cold air intake right behind it like almost on the throtle body. Can anyone point me in the direction of this post please. I have searched and everything with still no results =\

I assume you drive an RS? All the hoodscoops on the WRX's are functional.

Thats a stupid design for an intake in the winter... water and dust are direction right to the filter

I just bought an '00 OBS and I think I may it.

that mod is not very functional. the cold air that comes in doesn't have anywhere to go so it doesn't come in onto the intake nearly as much as you'd think. they'res also the water danger.

if you raised the hood up on it's back hinges with raisers so there was a little slit for air to come out in the back, that would increase air flow a lot more.

also the air is too turbulent without intake runners so it doesn't flow properly through the intake manifold(it's all jammed in there at the same time)

if by functional you mean airflow right to the intake, yes, but if functional you mean that causing any sort of gains... i think you'll be disapointed as i don't see it helping... only harming.

functional hood scoop, hell no

its to eat small children
Grintch 03-22-2004 04:10 PM

Hey Thumper, does your T-45 have those "Danger - Jet Intake" markings in front of the engine inlets?

I was thinking of making a replica set of those for the STi scoop on a magnetic backing when I make my autocross numbers and decals.

i had a heatshielded intake mounted on my GC, right under the scoop....directly onto the throttle body....here in texas it doesnt rain or snow much so i really didnt have a problem with weather. although it as really only good for noise. since you lose the plenulum for "reserve" air their is a tendency to bog sometimes...your better off with a cobb CAI :D i have one on my MY04 and i love it :D
subyrally 03-22-2004 06:12 PM

i have mine set up with the filter under the scoop, i havejnt had any problems with it yet, ive had the set up for almost a year now. right now i just have a come filter, im going to make a better set up once i get a new job or some money.
ATX25RS 03-22-2004 06:15 PM

yeah i ran my cone like that for about 2years with out any problems...

ever seen the filter on a wrc impreza???
logoguy 03-22-2004 08:35 PM

Thank you for all the reaplies But the one link i did get was not to what i was looking for. The tread gave you directions on how to make it and it used a cone filter. The other think i have talked to a friend of mine who knows a thing or two about cars and he says the water should not make a big deal. And as for performance It seems like a better idea becasuse in any other cold air intake kit/method it seems like the cone never gets exposed to any fresh air.

haha, actually, that would be pretty cool

hmmm, maybe I should get photoshop warmed up
bahboy20 03-23-2004 12:45 PM

hmm
so is the basic consensus that any type of filter connected to the throttle body directly, is not going to produce any gains?

withthe stock airbox disassembled, the rain issue appears to be a big problem.

with mounting a heat shield and cone/mushroom filter on the TB directly, you lose the air plenum, and bogging is a problem...

so basically is the only way to go, a Cobb type CAI? It would be nice if i could use the scoop, but with the split open airbox, rain is too much a problem and with the cone filter on the TB there is bogging.

ugh

all i was saying was in my experience, i ran the same times with the tb filter and an after market drop in (amsoil) the drop gave better 60'ft, but dropped the high end...the tb bogged the launches on most of them, but did pick up on the high end. this was in my 4eat 01RS though....

gravelsports from Subyspecialties...it does not feed directly into the TB, there is an intake track. And for $250...could give the cobb a run for the money...
