Gauge pod option?? your thoughts...

Do you guys think there would be any demand for something like this?
it's a custom made dash color matched gauge pod with the face built in... you drill to fit the gauges of your choice....
or...
would it be "easier" to pre drill them... ?
but there are so many different types of gauges out there...
thought this would be a good option....
styles are "wavy" as seen... and flat, more OEM looking.
if you have some thoughts, i'm curious as to what they may be.
cheers
Jamie

It looks good to me, especially color matched to the dash. It'd be easier to have holes pre-cut for 52mm and 60mm. I don't think too many use gauges outside of those sizes. I know with my talents it'd be tough for me to cut out my own holes and have it be spaced correctly. :)

Over all its one of the better combo pods I've seen. Color matching is good... texture matching, however, is important to me too. My preference is for the flat-topped pod.
Do you mean "pre drill" as in have the vendor/manufacturer do it? I would say avoid that like the plague. Not every manufacturer's ruler seems to be the same. Cut the holes for the gauges yourself. If you do not feel confident using a ruler and a holesaw or speedbore, find a friend who is. And the 2 Golden Rules of cutting stuff? Measure Twice Cut Once, and of course, Cut Smaller Than You Need And Dremel To Taste. (The second one I made up ;) ).
My preference is also to keep the clock in the OEM spot though. Before you take this plunge you might want to consider these [HKS cups which are currently on sale] which I've set up like this:

Gauge Pod

Would there be any interest in making one that holds 6 gauges? (2 rows of 3). it would need a taller internal metal frame but would allow more info in one scan position!

THANKS for the feedback guys...
keep the input coming if you will.
my thoughts were to let the customer drill the face for the pods themselves - that way they get the correct diameter....
thanks again

It's pretty easy to file the pods once they are drilled (had to do that with my Lo-Tek pod), so if you have them pre-sized for 52mm or 60mm, people can file them down pretty easily. Just takes a little time. I would think this would be easier than having to drill them yourself. But wiould this change the potential priceng? Having them pre-drilled that is...
| silvertoy | 12-04-2002 02:48 PM |
In the design you have pictured, I would suggest one of 2 things...
1. Putting 3 holes, about 3mm in diameter, perfectly centered in each of the circular "bulges". Then people can go to thier local hardware store and pick up an adjustable hole saw and cut it to the proper diameter they need and they will use your reference holes to line up thier cut. Adjustable hole saws range from $3-$10
2. Pre-cutting the back of the cover for both 52mm and 60mm but only about halfway through the depth of the material (I'm assuming it's abs plastic) Then you can let the user pick whichever one they want by cutting the remainder of the depth by whatever means necessary. Just don't make it too deep otherwise people will try to pop them out and pop out the wrong one by nature of the material.
my $.02

Check out the dash pic, I think that's the one 18FOREVR is reffering to.
Personally, I'm very interested in that gauge pod if you have it pre-drilled for 52mm gauges, I'm having a hell of time trying to make a half decent looking faceplate for my OEM pod! Plus I like the trick look of your prototype!
Let me know if you bring it to market pre-drilled ([emailprotected])

Jamie,
I dig silvertoy's idea about the guide holes... at the minimum you should do that.
-or-
Cut them for 52mm, if the end user wants 60mm, then they can cut them out themselves
or course, the ideal situation for the end user is to be able to order exactly what they need, so offer both, 'cept then the price would go up...

def. have the holes cut already, that was the hardest part for me when i was making it to hold my gauges, i myself prefer the flat style, it just looks more "stock"

i'd love it cause i want to mount a LCD screen where the stock stereo is and mount my headunit where the clock would be. This is hard to do when a face isn;t built into the pods. I'd buy a flat (not wavy) if they were not expensive.

Sounds like that would slot in pricewise somewhere near the cost of the Defi pod which is impossible to get and also too big IMHO. Also, should be about the same price as Omori pod which is a total piece of junk. If the quality is there to match Defi then I think in between 100 and 200 sounds fair!

i was just going to post about this pod. I saw it listed.
As mentioned before i think a 52mm cutout would be perfect. Most people prefer it (i think) and most guages are 52mm.
I like how its designed, not as tall as defi not as noticable, do u have a pic of te back of it? mounted in a car?
thanks, i definatly would be intrested in one...

so rather than drill them all the way through,
you'd like them scored?
or... should we drill them all to fit 52 mm
and those that want 60mm fit can dremel/hole drill them themselves?

My major concerns with these pods (and all others) is they seem to face straight back. If my rear seat passenger wants to see the boost fine, but it's more important that I see it. To get to the point the gauges should angle towards the driver.

Jamie,
I've been looking for a guage pod like you show for 60mm gauges. Either "wavy" or flat like the Subaru pod, but big enough for 60mm. As stated previously by others, the Defi pod is nearly impossible to get.
PM me if they are available and I will place an immediate order.:D
