Headlight painting... comments please

Hey people,
I just cleared my headlights and painted the housing. Im still not sure about the color and I can just as easily change it again. What do you guys think? I painted them in a platnum metalic color and it came out all right. I was shooting for more of a chrome look, but im seeing if the new color grows on me. I was also debating blacking them out or painting them the color of the body. I could also get some better chrome paint and do the job right! Let me know what you guys think. Heres some pictures:

after: (edited... went black)

I don't really like it. I think a flat black looks best.

use a better camera, those shots are whack, but from the looks it looks good.

I dont really have a good digital camera right now... I think Im going to cruze by the store and pick up some better paint.... what kind do you guys sugest? Im thinking dark blue or flat black
| Tim-H | 12-24-2005 12:56 PM |
I think flat black looks best on all the years headlights. You could always try both colors, spray paint is cheap and all it takes is a little time.

flat black on mine... glossy will look ugly
| turbo tecnica | 12-24-2005 02:08 PM |
Yep I used semi-gloss for more of a "factory" look when I painted my headlights. Yours doesn't look bad, but I think black would just be better overall.
| johncarl | 12-24-2005 02:11 PM |
did you use semi-gloss black or in the color of your car?
I just picked up some rustoleum chrome paint for like 2 bucks at home depot.... I think Im going to give the chrome thing another shot tomorrow. I might as well pick up some other colors too in case the chrome doesnt work out.
Found some pics:
Chrome: (This is how I want it to look)

Black: (Most popular I would say)

Blue: (Unique)

I used semi-gloss black. The chrome looks good, and so does the black.... either/or.
| johncarl | 12-24-2005 03:49 PM |
Im leaning more towards the flat black... the chrome paint I picked up is a little dull.
| LENNY_LESTER | 12-24-2005 04:23 PM |
black 100%...I would do it in a heartbeat if my car was black. However, it's silver and I think that would look whack.

question for you...when you bake the lamps and open them up...do you simply remove the orange reflectors? I'm assuming if the after pictures they are just missing?
thanks for a reply on this

yeah they pop right out, they are just held in by tabs. a small flathead screwdriver works best.
I am liking the color match on that WRB.

Dude, I like it too... On one hand I would like to make the headlights silver and on the other I would kinda like to paint them blue ridge pearl.... but then again I have heard black looks the best. I would love to hear some more comments...

I still don't have the balls to put my lights in an oven but i would say flat black.
| MBasile | 12-25-2005 04:58 AM |
I think flat looks better witht the clear plastic housing over it. Otherwise theres just too much shiney stuff, ya know? for the morrettes or prodrives I like glossy though.
As for color choice, I'd say black or the color of the body...which in your case would be black again

Euw, rice-o-matic. My 05 WRB wagon's headlights are flat black, just comes down to personal taste though. I put yellow LED's in the marker position so it appears white/clear until the lights are on and went for the amber bulb in the turn signal. Another thing is that I put black electrical tape inside of the inner housing so you couldn't see through the tabs left after removing the "orange slice." Kinda ghetto, but the results don't look it.

I vote for flat black. It will look great, even though your car is dark blue. Black will give the car a whole new attitude.
EDIT: Oops, I didn't see that there was a page two on this thread. Um... Yea, the black looks great now!

I second this....what exactly do you paint? I'm clearing my headlights like 2 weeks from now and would like to know ahead of time instead of second guessing and screwing up...i understand howto clear the lights, but not sure about the painting

uh, you just paint the piece that is between the clear plastic and the reflective head light chromed plastic. Ive done it twice... just look up clearing your headlights, and you will see how to open up your headlight units.

I used gloss black and it looks great on my White WRX
