Help mounting a Version 5 Wing part 1

Help mounting a Version 5 Wing

Those that know. I need help mounting my version 5 wing! There are 13 bolts and washers. Do I need to drill 13 holes in the trunk? It's the TRi replica, who has done this before. I get the painted spoiler back this Thursday and want to get it mounted. Should I let a "professional" do it or should I. I'd drilled holes in my previous car to mount a spoiler, but 13 holes?

Help,
Mike Gayle

Yeah i got the same spoiler that SubieGal has and i used the 4 holes from the stock one, but there are also 2 more you can use which are where the plastic clips were for the stock one.
trojan9x 04-10-2001 10:18 AM

you've got a nice backside there subiegal [img]http://www.i-club.com/ubb-files/smilies/biggrin.gif[/img]
mpaone 04-10-2001 11:15 AM

Are you sure it's a replica? [img]http://www.i-club.com/ubb-files/smilies/wink.gif[/img] 13 bolts sounds like STi to me...

Subie Gal 04-10-2001 11:19 AM

Hehe. Why not? That has to save at least 1/4 oz. in excess weight...probably more once the rust starts!

Thanks all. Will use the four holes only.
Mike :-)

I used the stock holes too. No problems even at high speeds.

How'd you get the stock wing off? Is it just unscrewing the bolts and yanking it off? Thanks
ImprezedRS 04-11-2001 07:37 AM

Well if you want to take it off like the people that stole mine, just yank it off, but that will mess up your trunk lid. Just look under the lid there will be 2 nuts on each side that have to be taken off(2 are hidden under rubber bump stop thing), then disconect the wire for the stock one, then carfully pull up on each side of spoiler then take it off, best to have a friend to help you so you don't scratch your car.

I'm picking up the wing today and it will be on tonight--wife and kids gone for two weeks. It's time for the Underground Upgrade Club (UUC) to kick into high gear. All the mods that have been hidden in the garage get put on now. She'll never know the difference. "Ain't it cool..." Anyone heading down to VMP for the Scooby Day on Friday? PM me.

Say everyone, can you guys tell me if this a good wing to buy: "Prodrive WRC Wing"? Have anybody purchase this wing on this link:
http://www.autocaresubaru.com/bodymain.html

I am planning on buying this wing from this company (ISR). Did anybody buy from this company before (ISR Subaru Performance). The wing comes with a light on the top of the wing instead of the Version 5 wing which the light is located on the bottom of the wing. Thank you for helping guys. -ALiasAngel [img]http://www.i-club.com/ubb-files/smilies/smile.gif[/img]

Or you could always get the lightwegith aluminum trunk lid. I saw a picture of it somewhere it and it looked like it had a whole mess of holes drilled all across the lid... perfect for mounting a nice big v5 style wing onto.
kamj12 04-14-2001 01:17 AM

ummmm... i wonder if the wing fits the 2002 models? anyone...?
schuey555 04-14-2001 01:21 AM

the base of my v.5 replica doesnt come all the way down you can see through it. whats up with that? i know the body shop used all 6 screws is it put on incorrectly or is the replica half ass?
TeamSUBARU 04-14-2001 01:35 AM

Replicas are all half ass. Nothing beats the real deal.

I am going with the aluminum trunk lid with the 13 holes already there. Why? Because I had my version 5 ripped off my car (stolen) and the 6 bolts holding it down did absolutely nothing to keep it there.

Watch out subie Gal, the neighbors are playing dirty around here, keep that wing in your vision at all times...
^jynx^ 04-14-2001 04:07 AM

yeah mine is slighty lifted in the center
dcoty 04-14-2001 01:23 PM

Thsi is a very vague story, I have a very poor memory, sorry for the lack of detail. I talked to mike shields today www.spdusa.com and he told me that a company bought some 22B wings from some place like singapore or something and they all were warped and were a total mess after the shipping, not from the handling, but they were a pretty shoddy job to begin with. However I heard that the replicas from www.mrtrally.com are quite good though.
Dan (cant remember jack) Coty
BTW: Where can I get a 22B replica closer than australia,I live in montreal and the shipping kills me!!

My V5 replica also has a tiny gap to the trunklid. The thing that bugs me is that the wing starts to vibrate at 120km/h - exactly our usual cruising speed. Once I hit about 140km/h it's gone again.
Anyone else's wing do that too?
Cliff Ditchhanger 04-15-2001 12:37 AM

Yeah...replicas aren't that great. The one I bought last summer also had a gap in the front (on the rear widow side) as well ad a gap towards the edge of the trunk lid. For some reason, WRX-STi's Version 5 replica from MRT cost about $700 and it fit perfectly. I just went with a real Version 6 wing and gave the replica away
Frank 04-15-2001 12:42 AM

thats what the other 9 bolts are for (the middle). If you got a decent replica though there shouldn't be any bowing in the center.
schuey555 04-15-2001 08:32 PM

gap yes
rattle no
ImprezedRS 04-16-2001 06:42 AM

Mine has the gap too
mpaone 04-16-2001 06:48 AM

I have a real version VI wing coming. Knowing my luck, it won't arrive until the version IX STi is out, but it should fit perfectly. [img]http://www.i-club.com/ubb-files/smilies/wink.gif[/img]

Cliff Ditchhanger 04-16-2001 09:14 AM

Mike...let me tell you...the real thing fits perfectly...you will really enjoy it
AliasAngel 04-17-2001 11:55 AM

Guys, what is the difference between a Prodrive WRC Wing, WRX Version 5 Wing, and the 22B Wing? They all look soo similar.

Does anyone has picture of a Prodrive wing on their car?

I'm puttin my V.5 Replica on thursday night as well. I will be drilling the trunk due to the gap in the center. Its not that hard when you have trace paper and a step-drill.

Now here are my questions to those who have installed the TRi Replica...

On the bottom sides of the lower portion of the wing, there are three holes, so you can get a long screwdriver extenstion in there to take apart the top piece. The wing came with plastic covers for those holes, but they were just taped on. what do I do with these? Just leave the holes open, or try and super-glue the plug-things on there?

Also, what are the long black plastic ties for that came in the bag with all the 13 bolts? (See pic below)

Thanks,
JP

Bump- I need to know how to install it exactly-- like, not the drilling part, but what are the plastic black things for, and also about those PLug's on the sides.. Do i need them or not? If so, how do i attach them?

-JP
JP Money 04-19-2001 10:05 AM

Does anyone feel like replying to my questions? come on, there are like 500 people with the v.5 wing! someone has to have installed it themselves.... speak up!
