here's how i painted my defi pod

ok so my goal was not only to get a good color match, but to get some kind of a texture match as well; basically as close as possible to OEM quality. so i ended up pulling some martha stewart isht (thanks mom), and decided to use an application technique called sponge painting. it's all pretty simple really and it doesn't take very long to do.
i went to home depot and bought some 'natural sea sponges', and while i was there i had them mix $10 can of latex paint (colormatched by computer - but not quite right). i first did several coatings with the softer, thicker latex paint using the sponges. then i sanded any inconsistencies down w/ some super fine sandpaper. washed it off real good, and added several coats of Duplicolor's "interior and vinyl color" VS 3 Flat Black (got it at trak auto), this color was by far the closest match, and the lustre is perfect, which i found very important in selecting the winner. it sealed the latex paint while providing some kind of protection against moisture, scratches, and most important, fading.
overall it looks very very close to OEM, and hasn't faded or scratched or anything over the past year or so that i've had them, i've gotten it wet (w/ water and such) several times and it has never affected the paint at all. as for those that like the ghetto grease on your dash, you'll have to test that out on your own. i spent quite a bit of time researching vaccuum fitting textured rubber/vinyl, upholstering, and custom dash refinishing (pros that do painting similar to what i did quoted me at ~$150), but this was by far the most cost effective and easiest to do, costing around $25 when it was all said and done. the picture isn't quite that good of quality and there's some funky shadows on there, but you get the point. sorry this isht's so long, hope this helps someone though.

actually, i just got back from my body shop guy's place, and all he would have done is estimate the color too, so I may do what you are doing.
question- what piece did u bring in to color match it from home depot? I'll probably do that and get some interior paint from Advance Auto. If it looks good, I'll do it on both defi gauge pods and sell one of them :)
Sorry to be a dumbass :)

I got the paint today from home depot and a sea sponge. cost me $20. Not too bad, i'm gonna see how it comes out first and if I don't like it, i'll add the flat black interior paint.
How do you get the clock off? I got the clips off closest to the windshield, but couldn't get the rest off. I just used the trim around the ebrake.
About the second pod, I'm gonna see how I do on the first pod, and if i do a good job, i'll do the second one, and try to sell it painted. If you absolutely want it unpainted, let me know here....Thanks!

that's cool sf, i would strongly suggest using the interior spray to finish it off, but the latex paint is thicker and easier to manipulate (helps with the texture), good luck.

ok i did it....so I didn't take my time that much....I sanded first, rinsed....let dry....sponge painted....dried to a perfect match...I sprayed the inside piece, and I didn't like how it came, so I left the outside piece. Wasn't completely dry when i installed it, but i left it to dry overnight. I think it looks good, except where i screwed up on a small piece. Pictures to come tonite in a separate thread, but I'll link from here :D

Has anyone actually tried upholstering the pod with vinyl, suede, Alcantara, or even perforated leather (that matches the steering wheel)?
| WRX Potential | 03-22-2003 12:37 AM |
i went around to no less than 6 local shops that do custom upholstering, they all told me that they couldn't do it b/c it was too "curvacious" (sp?).

pics coming tonite, i'm goin outside to take them right now, and then i have to run off to work though :(
I do have an extra defi pod, which I think i'm going to sell it unpainted for 160 shipped, or painted for 175 shipped....I'd say my time was worth 15 bucks....hehehe
