HID Morettes
1 Attachment(s)
OLMEK and I installed some HIDs on Morettes today. We use the Eaglelytes H7 kit and everything was pure plug and play. I mean, EVERYTHING worked on the first and last wire hookup. No dim high beam or fog light indicator problems, no fuses burned, nothing. I use the feed that was going to the existing bulb to feed the ballasts, changed the fuses to 20amp instead of 15. I think why the install was successful is the fact that Morettes already come with their own relays for both the low and high beams - so no relay kit was required. The last mod we did was to disable the DRLs.
Here are some pics I took:

G-Force -
Nice work. Good picts as well. Can you confirm that the HIDs you installed are for 'low beam' only and that the 'high beam' lights are the standard ones provided with the Morettes?

I like the HID's but they are xpensive.. i dont even have morettes yet. How much does it cost to get the morettes painted?
Would it be cheaper to buy the morettes with HID's or to buy them with regular lights and then put the HID's in like you did?
Thanx

I bought the HIDs from Midnight Moose and paid $335.00 for them through a groupbuy.
The HIDs are low beam. The high beam are just the regular ones on the Morettes.
OLMEK got them painted for $65.00. Prices on HID Morettes would depend on the quality (color temperature) and brand.

Good lookin' out G-Force!
There are no words that FULLY describe how satisfied I am with the end result, but I can honestly say that I'm glad I waited until I had the Morettes before buying HID's since realizing they operate so well together.
I was previously concerned about needlessly blinding onward traffic by transmitting those annoying jumping light effects you sometimes see with reflector lenses, however, as G-Force estimated during the install, using the Morette projectors was key in eliminating this common issue. This was just one of the many advantages I've witnessed so far.
I just love how it looks in my Silver Scooby, CLEAN & MEAN!!

Driving Lights?
If you mean Low beams, the HID bulbs are the low beams (outer lens), the high beams are halogen (inner lens), and I'm not interested in changing that.
If you're referring to the Fog lights, I'm probably going to buy STi covers later on.
Sorry if I misunderstood you. :p

My bust! I meant Fog lights. (Sorry: Lack of sleep, hehe)
My understanding is that they about $1200 a set.

$1200 Bones???
I'm going to try and see if I can find them at a more reasonable price. If I do, I'll let you know. Otherwise, I'll most likely buy the covers.
There are just too many other mods on my list to make HID fog lights a priority. ;)

Yeah, no kidding! Kinda steep eh! But if your thing is ultimate in night-time visibility, then you really can't beat HID's. I love em. You know it's funny that I've had an HID bike light and even have an HID dive light, but have never had one on any of my cars.
If you find them cheaper, I'd love to know about it. Thanks.

I'm thinking of getting morettes, and already have the HIDs from the group buy. How's the night-time pattern with the HIDs? Good or better than standard?
| OLMEK | 01-23-2002 07:29 PM |
The resulting light pattern is more crisp and precise than standard, of course. Lets just say that its hard to tell if I have on my high beams and/or fog lights. These HID's are bright, but when using them in Morettes, they light up only what is needed.

Hey Mario, I think you're talking about the Hella HID kit that Rally Performance is selling.
Why don't you just buy a H3 HID and retrofit your existing fog light lenses. $350-500 for any good HID kit would work.

Re: HID Morettes
Looks great...
do all Morettes come with built in relays?
how about those UK300 lights? Also built-in relays (if you know off hand)?
Thanks!

Mechanics Of The Install?
A few questions on the mechanics of the HID install.
Where did you mount the ballasts?
Did your Morettes come with a connector to mate with the car's 9007 connector or did you do something else?
Do you have a recommendation as where to purchase the Morettes?

I mounted the ballasts on a flat spot just behind both headlights.
I used wire taps to the existing harness and then wired them to some molex connectors (male and females - plug n play!) to the Morettes.
OLMEK bought his from me, which I bought from Rally Performance. Z-1 Performance also has them. Check the groupbuy section for some current buys.

Why the heck are HID kits so damn expensive? I just bought Morettes with harness for $500 and saw that with the HID kit it was close to $1000. That's totally ridiculous. After seeing the quality of the plastic on the Morettes I thought even $500 was high. I people keep paying ridiculous prices for aftermarket car stuff, the prices will just keep going up, Car people let themselves get raped by vendors. The markup has to be like 100% - 300% across the board. That's not fair.

Markup isn't that great, and morettes are expensive to produce and develop i would believe. Its a proper lighting set up, so a lot of R&D went into it obviously. HIDs have come down in price BTW... you just gotta look around.

With Morrettes, you aren't paying for the housing as much as the quality of the Hella/Cibie optics. Nice stuff, just not my style visually.
