biggrumpybutt 03-01-2007 10:10 PM

Hood Damper install w/ pictures
got the itchy hand and got a small cheap mod for it which makes opening my hood easier and also when i work in my engine bay, i wont hit the stupid hood prop like before, was considering buying the TEIN Hood Damper because i have green samco hoses, but there were like almost half the price and black is ok with me

SloSubie 03-01-2007 10:20 PM

Nice rewrite up...

Who makes them?
Dforce 03-01-2007 10:22 PM

I took mine off.

btw to the OP time to clean the engine bay! Make all thsoe expensive bling parts, well....BLING! :)
chrisarella 03-01-2007 10:23 PM

What brand are those? I just got the polished stainless NRG struts for my sonic yellow bugeye and I love them! Yours look a lot like mine except yours are black.

Definately one of my favorite mods yet (which says a lot considering my car is modded to death).

Too bad about that dent in your fender though. :(
WhiteFox 03-01-2007 10:28 PM

how much?
skate enjoi 03-01-2007 10:35 PM

i got some off ebay for like 50 bucks... good write up

$120.00 plus tax since im local to the shop, they only thing stock you should have left over from your car is 2 10mm bolts because the balljoint bolt replaces it, so you still have your stock hood bracket as you can see inthe pictures
Nice rewrite up...

im not sure, they just brand them as SIX Hood Dampers, i think they import these themselves and brand as thier own
I took mine off.

i think they are imported from the same manufacturer overseas and branded under the shop, SIX Hood Dampers, ya i know, i got hit by my friends exhaust muffler when we were at a track even @ willow springs and his AE86 exhaust broke off and I was going at a speed where i didnt feel safe to avoid otherwise i might have gone off the track and lose control
how much?
$120.00 for them
i got some off ebay for like 50 bucks... good write up
wow, good deal, i just looked it up and on ebay they are $54.99 plus $20.00 shipping which is cheap, but i get everything at my friends shop and they even installed it for me while i took the pictures, i think my friend would get mad if i bought it else where when he had it

the ones on ebay, or the auction i found, the black brackets look different, but it doesnt matter, as long as it works
impreza97 03-01-2007 11:03 PM

let me know if you want to get them from my friend, see if i can work something out, i honestly paid under $88.00 because we've been friends for over 10 years, but he said he normally sells for $120, thats why i put $120, but let me know if your interested in his, i can ask him to work out something for NASIOC guys
biggrumpybutt 03-01-2007 11:11 PM

i just called him, he said he'll do $72 shipped out of CA, or local $72, tax included
Meat Supply 03-02-2007 12:07 AM

not too bad price. i've always wanted to do this to my old car, but would rather do it to my subie...........i've always liked ford trucs like that, they have that big ugly spring thing on the hinge but you just lift the darm thing up, no rod.......
Wannascooby 03-02-2007 04:39 AM

I have some hood dampers too on my car. I just picked up a set of Tein ones. They work great, but I really don't like the green. I'm thinking about picking up some made by goixiz.
lil'redwagon 03-02-2007 07:48 AM

just a head's up guys - i just got the Godspeed hood dampers and they are CRAP! $50 on ebay, and i also picked them up. they look just like yours, but they were probably the worst aftermarket part i've seen, in terms of modular quality. ...and i've seen A LOOOOT of bad aftermarket stuff. you wouldn't think there would be much to screw up. at least that's what i thought.

opened up the package, and started assembling the parts by hand. "hmmm... this little cone top doesn't really screw on thiis damper very easily... no worries, i'll try it on the other one... nope! ok, let me try the other cone... nope not a smooth fit on either damper either. hmmm... ok, well let's try the atachment on the other side of the damper (the little female end that screws on the end of the shaft)... great! they both go on smoothly! wait... one of them is missing the little clip!!!!! alright... i guess i'll just make one. so i bent a paper clip to the right shape and slid it in. it does the job. it'll rust fast though. so that end is complete. still had to figure out the other end. the cones weren't threading on the damper, and the attachment that was meant to go into the cones kept wanting to go in crooked! i twiddled around with it for a little while, and eventually got fed up, grabbed my channel locks, and cross-threaded everything with loctite. is it over yet? nope! gotta get the dampers on the car. ok. one side went very smoothly, aside from having to use my paper clip "pin". then i get to the driver's side, and the damn thing doesn't fit around the ball on the hood side!!!!! i couldn't believe it! so i took mount off the hood, and tried to squeeze it on to the ball with the channel locks. nope! eventually, i just started hammering it against the floor. after A LOT of hammering and some deep creep, it finally popped in. i have dents on my garage floor in the shape of the bracket - that's how hard i had to hammer it.

sooooo sorry this turned out to be such a long post. but i just finished spending a couple hours, and breaking a sweat, on my HOOD DAMPER INSTALLATION!!!!!! that's ridiculous! i've done them before and it's a 5min job. 10min tops... nope! not with Godspeed! the smart man would have just packed them back up and returned them, but i kept getting past these little things thinking, well that sucked, but the rest will be easy. whatever. get the teins and hopefully you can avoid the experience i had to go through. ...or don't get the teins, but definitely DON'T get the Godspeed hood dampers.
ekw 03-02-2007 08:19 AM

I run these:
http://www.ixizconcept.com/ixizhood_IH401.htm
love them. great quality & great price.
I don't think there are any available now, but if there was enough interest he might make another run.
Knightmare69 03-02-2007 09:13 AM

Biggrumpybutt- Can your shop get these for other applications?
RayO 03-02-2007 09:31 AM

I'm on a waiting list for the ixizhood ones referred to above. I just got an e-mail that they're making some "improvements" to them, and the "new" ones will be available in late March, I think.
The write up that I saw on the original ones was very complimentary, and the price seemed very good. So I'll keep waiting.
ekw 03-02-2007 09:36 AM

RayO - I think you will find them worth the wait.
not sure what the upgrades are, as fitment and function are very good.
how well they hold up over the long term remains to be seen,
but my experience has been very positive.
Knightmare69 03-02-2007 09:56 AM

I have a set of the ixizhood dampners and I love them, my gf is jealous and wants a set for her car.
biggrumpybutt 03-02-2007 12:12 PM

lil'redwagon - wow, that sucks, there were no issues in the installations of mine, they took 10min. including taking the time to take the pictures.
Biggrumpybutt- Can your shop get these for other applications?
other than WRX, there is only EVO available
B00st3dWRX 03-02-2007 02:59 PM

no offense but $80 bucks just to hold your hood up, unless your in a show and rockin teins just for points factor I dont see spending $80 bucks to go "look how far it raises my hood" buy an uppipe or hell thats a good start towards a protune IMO......on the positive side they are very clean and you did a great install....now wash that engine bay :)
biggrumpybutt 03-02-2007 03:52 PM

you know i totaly hear what your saying, i already have a hks upipe, espeiler dp, espelier exhaust, custom espelier headers, ARC RADIATOR, arc induction box, ALL samco hoses possible and in GREEN, arc titanium diversion panel, arc titanium pully cover panel, and more, i mess around in my engine bay alot on weekends, its sucks when i move roght to left and the hood prop stick gets in my way since i also install all my own parts, except this hood damper because iw as taking pictures to speed up the process

so yes, sorry if this thread is taking up your time on nasioc, i know its not a power mod, its not even going to give you 1hp, maybe slow down your car because it weighs like 1lb something, but i got it for convenience

i know i know, i need to install a vf34, sti injectors, arc front mount intercooler, arc bov and soe other stuff this month, so i will clean my engine bay then, i dont drive this car as much as before and it parks alot

Damn, I'm looking for a quality set for my gf's accord.
chrisarella 03-02-2007 04:58 PM
how much?
My polished stainless steel NRG struts were $110 shipped here on NASIOC.

I really wanted the carbon fiber Enduratechs but I waited 3 months for them to come back to North America from Japan, and nothing. They've been on backorder since September 2006, so I gave up hope. And I realy don't like the Teins in green. I'm quite happy with what I got.

Call me crazy, but I smile every time I lift my hood... even though some think it's a waste to spend money on bling items that actually serve as a convenience as well. I guess if you don't work on your own car these would seam stupid, but to each their own.

I'm sure Dave at MSPT was happier installing my new vf37 twinscroll turbo setup not having to deal with a hood prop in the way.

:p
Damn, I'm looking for a quality set for my gf's accord.
thanks!
BlaxTrax 03-05-2007 08:06 PM

Good write up... This was one of the first things that I did to my car to make it easier to work on. I picked up the NRG hood dampers. They are the same exact things. The guys at my work make fun of me for this being one of the first things I did to my car, but it does make working on it a lot easier.
biggrumpybutt 03-05-2007 08:19 PM

Difference between ebay ones and the one i got
well just to let you guys all know who are thinking about getting the hood dampers, the cheap ones on ebay, even the tein ones are just mild steel and chromed, i dont know if people have posted but for the people that get snow, eventually the mild steel will rust and have been heard about it snapping or bending after it starts rusting

the one i got is made of stianless steel and that is way better, of course stainless steel costs more than mild steel

so for people who think the ebay one and tein ones are worth etting, think again, i plan on keeping my car and the hood dampers for a while and it would suck if they broke
crazy_sti 03-05-2007 08:34 PM

i got the tein dampers they are awesome helps out alot when working in the bay great buy. plus it makes it look better then the stock hood prop.
biggrumpybutt 03-05-2007 09:46 PM

well sorry, dont want to say anything about what others have, im just stating the differences, i hope whatever hood damper people buy, it works forever, i just like the fact that i found out mine is stanless steel and not mild steel like some other brands, it helps to have a peace of mind
