Hotwiring a WRX part 1

viru567 08-02-2004 09:34 AM

Hotwiring a WRX
My car got jacked 2 weeks ago (stay away from jersey), luckily they only took the stereo, my engine/engine mods are all there and fine. I get my car back from insurance soon, their going to get an estimate, the damage was small, just a ripped out stereo and the ignition wires were tangled with, looks like they just went for a joy ride. Anyway, point is i have a picture of my ignition system and im trying to figure out how they hotwired it, which wires they cut and what ill need to fix, heres the pic:

Let me know what u guys think, and what all from this page would i need to buy for replacement? http://www.subaruparts.com/diag/?model=5A&year=2002&style=WRX&scn=5&category=580-1

Thanks,

I'm not sure if anyone should really be telling you how they hotwired the car or how the wiring works as that would just make it easier for the "not-so-smart" thieves to steal more cars. If you really want to know how it works, I would suggest getting your hands on the factory wiring manual.

Wow, they tore that key bank pretty good.

Sorry about your lost.

Thieves suck.

Looks to me like they just broke the whole ignition lock cylinder and housing out and turned the ignition switch over with a screw driver or something.
darknightohio 08-02-2004 11:44 AM

You should buy an accessport and use the anti-theft mode.

thats what it looks like to me too, if thats the case maybe ill be able to start the car that way too and bring it home. and CNK, im not asking for someone to give me a whole lecture on stealing a wrx, im simply posting a pic of my ignition and asking how im supposed to fix it, my post is titled that because i assumed anyone who knows enough about the ignition system to do something like that can help me out.

dark - i wanted one but i couldnt dig the wait, i had a viper on order tho, i might even opt out of that and go for a lowjack and something else.
cnk 08-02-2004 12:05 PM

My only point is that you can't be too careful these days. You are new to the boards and are asking a question about the wiring of the ignition system. You must admit that there is reason to be a little cautious. As I suggested above, either get a copy of the wiring guide or find someone local to you that has it.

IIRC moderators don't want this talked about on the forums due to basically giving carjackers the information they need without working. Also makes it easier for punk kids to do it(we all know punk kids are stupid) I would suggest PMing a mod and locking this thread, for the good of imprezas everywhere.
thedaddyb 08-02-2004 02:26 PM

most theives use those professional dent popping kits to basically drill into the ignition core, completely obliterate it (like in the pic) then use a screwdriver to turn the ignition. Happened to my roomates car.

I suggest getting an alarm that has a starter kill to prevent this from happening again.
MikeWRX-NJ 08-02-2004 02:44 PM

starter kill isnt going to do anything if its a manual, they just have to do what you said and push start the car. Get a fuel kill switch that is VERY hidden. and i dont mean a switch behind the dash.
viru567 08-02-2004 03:03 PM

If the pic i posted or the replys here are giving away too much info then i have no problem with them removing this thread, i had no intention of doing so and if i did i apologize but im just a guy who got his car jacked and is trying to fix it. Thanks everyone for the responses tho, i think i have a really good idea of what they did and can try to reverse it, i might even try welding the keyhole back on if itll fit back but i doubt it, if not insurance will spot me for a new assembly im sure and im going to take ur advice on the fuel kill, if u guys reccomend any alarm systems please let me know, i should have a good bit of the insuranemoney left over to snag a decent one. if the thread is closed then please PM me with a suggestion.
Thanks

Well I guess this is a great time for a zerosports push button starter :-D
North Ursalia 08-02-2004 04:41 PM

For my part, even dumb thieves know basically how to hotwire a car. Even if you're an idiot, once you have the lock assembly out, you have basically about a 20% chance of getting it right on the first try even if you don't know the first thing about hotwiring cars. I'm only locking this because the poster requested it; keep in mind that wiring diagrams are readily available to anyone who can type and press "enter" into a search engine ;).

Get the viper they have a GPS tracking system that is 100times better than
lojack. Look up viper GPS it is a very sick system works everywhere.
rich728 08-02-2004 06:26 PM

is there anyother GMS tracking alarm?
MikeWRX-NJ 08-02-2004 07:14 PM

yes the omega gps2000.com

check gps2000online.com
MRF582 08-02-2004 08:14 PM

in my last car (93 Accord DX) i set up the ashtray so the car would only start when the ashtray was out. i'll have to think something crazy like that again for the WRX.
azimiut 08-02-2004 11:06 PM

thanks for showing how to steal my car
thanks for showing how to steal my car
 "Hard Copy" type of shows present how useless alot of anti-theft devices are. If you have ever seen one of the programs, you have seen how to utilize a few tools to defeat the ignition lock.

I would bet that 4 out of 5 posters on this board already have most of it already figuered out.

I find it funny how alot of of movies and televison programs (fiction and news types) portray lock picking incorrectly, yet show quite thoroughly how to steal a car.

no wires were cut. they popped your ignition lock to access the switch. you will need to replace the entire lock and ignition switch assembly. you appear to have a 03+ vehicle since there are 2 wires leading to the ignition switch (lighted ring). Obviously your steering column needs to be replaced as well.
if the ignition lock isn't repairable you may need a new ignition key.

when you are finished repairing the damages done, i highly suggest implementing a hidden fuel pump or ignition kill switch. or install a clifford blackjax 4 system which requires a valet code to be entered each time you start and/or every time a door is opened and closed.

Is there any way to bypass the clifford alarm you speak of? I'm VERY intersted in getting a kick ass alarm system to add to the safety of my car. PM me if you can please. Thanks.

I think you forgot to lock the thread Brian.

Ibtl
netZ 08-03-2004 08:39 AM

if installed properly, ie. hiding wire connections etc it will be difficult to bypass. it's a standalone system that works in conjunction with either factory or aftermarket alarms. you can probably pick up a clifford blackjax 4 for about $100.

if you need a combination alarm/blackjax4 check out clifford's new g5 line of alarm systems.

Just thought of something, i can still start the car the way it is now right? i will need to get it to my house once its at the insurance place whenever it gets there sometime soon (today or tomorrow they said), can i just stick a screwdriver in there and turn it with the clutch down and start it? or maybe i can just hold the keyhole back in place and use the key? im trying to figure out if they sawed off the little switch part on the back of the keyhole or not, who knows, maybe i can just weld that back in place since no wires seemed to be cut.
netZ 08-03-2004 03:15 PM

i'd be very careful trying to drive the vehicle in this condition since the ignition lock mechanism has been damaged. if the ignition switch can stay in the on position after starting the vehicle then you shouldn't have any problems.

i've seen situations where an owner used a screw driver to recover their vehicle only to find the steering wheel lock up while they were driving it home.

otherwise i recommend having it towed via flatbed and then repaired immediately.
