keep in mind factory paint is baked on at a much higher temperature than you would get getting your car painted at the shop- unless of course you happen to dismantel the entire body first-

It's not paint, it's the same as the foil they put on Easter chocolates.

I've got tons of paint chips on mine. There's a corner covered with gravel near my friend's house and i can't resist it. [img]http://www.i-club.com/ubb-files/smilies/smile.gif[/img]

What's temperature have to do with it? And feel free to post pics of all the chips, scratches and swirl marks.

[img]http://www.i-club.com/ubb-files/smilies/eek.gif[/img] That's scary!
On topic, I think M&M's have a thicker coating than our cars.

M&M's does have more coats then the stock paint job...m&m's shell went through a lot of tests so the shell is perfectly shiny all around and its scratch resistants (sp?)

the number of coats of paint really doesnt have much effect on how it holds up to such things as stone chips and what not. I repainted a '79 Jeep CJ and that had a total of 12 coats of 'stuff' (1 primer, 3 sealer, 4 color, 4 clear - with wetsanding inbetween)and that still isnt holding up as well as i would like it to... for some reason the paint is too hard and chips off - oh well
but as far as the subaru paint goes - i dont know what is wrong with it - but it definitely sucks
Just my $0.02

Well If they fixed the paint I might consider a WRX or STI when it comes, but given the way my 2000 RS paint looks I KNOW this is my last Subaru. Subaru really screwed up on their paint and they seem to refuse to address this, YEAR AFTER YEAR. Go get a nice $6,000 quote for repainting your car properly and you will question why do I have to even consider this when my car isnt even 2 years old.

This much I do know: people who have the Indiana-built Legacies don't complain as much about paint quality as those of us with Japan-built cars do. Maybe that's something we actually do better here in the US.

don't know if i'm right or not but i though subaru used 2 light coats of paint and a single clear coat. still very cheap quality. my car has scraches all over aready.

My friend says "all stock paintjobs suck." How does the factory Subaru paint job compare to other car companies?
A4Killer, $6,000 is way too much. Get a quote from somewhere else. I think it should be about 3-4k.

The Subaru paint ranks up there with the paint on the 3rd gen RX-7 that I used to have. There were guys who fought Mazda to get their car repainted and won. In fact, there were a few that insisted that the car was stripped to bare metal and repainted. Mazda was worse ... the paint on some cars was flaking off at the edges of panels.
Anyway, my RS paint is chipped and has scratches as well. One was my fault, I dropped my key and it grazed the driver's door and left a scratch down to the primer.

Wonder if the paint on the new 2002 models is different??? Haven't heard this addressed but maybe they listened to everyone bitch and moan about it.....
| inpreza kid | 04-22-2001 10:15 PM |
i think its the same because some aready have rock chips on their cars.

I'm not impressed with the paint job either, but its not going to keep me from buying subarus. I've always planned on getting it painted steel blue mica anyways, might as well have a reason to repaint it when that time comes.

Anyone thought of getting some "signatures" together? Or just plain printing this thread and sending it to SOA?
For the record, my paint is horrible. I've had my RS since March 2, 2001 and I have a large swirl on the trunk lid , numerous scratches, and a huge chip on the front right quarter panel that has started to flake a bit.

I've got an Indiana built legacy, and the paint seems ok; couple chips, but they were there when I got the car......

not enough...cheap ass paint flakes off if you sneeze on it.....
