How much weight would I lose....

Okay, this is going to sound dumb, but I have an 05 STi, and I was wondering how much weight I would lose if I gut the interior... Side Panels and all. Down to the bare black skeleton.
| MannyMohawk#5 | 01-24-2006 12:21 AM |
Maybe a couple hundred lbs., but how will you drive it with no seats or a steering wheel. I wouldn't do it...it just doesn't sound safe.

Pssh you don't need a steering wheel, just line up the wheels and weld the shaft in place. and seats kill more people than save lives, everyone knows that

I am assuming he still want the seats and steering wheel. Well, I think you should get below 100lbs. The heaviest would be the front seats

the best way to save weight is to put small holes all over your frame, like an erector set.
It will keep its' rigidity while saving weight just by removing metal.

,.....by being real draconian....ya MIGHT get it down to 2800 or 2750

Um... what's stupid about this request - wanting to know how much the interior pieces weigh?
If you're competing or participating in rally, track or drag events (where the intention is to get your times down...which is easier to do when pushing around less weight), weight reduction is standard practice and the interior is an easy (and reversible) place to cut weight, even if it's not huge. But weight reduction is seldom "huge" - it's the sum of a LOT of smaller parts. And not a bad idea on a 3300lb. beast.
Cut the guy a break and stop assuming everyone that asks a question is out to rice their ride... Maybe even contribute something. Geez.
edit: Scotty - you think you can trim 500lb off the car just by trimming and removing excess stuff? (edit2: a quick and generous add-up of the helpful list provided by garie makes 330lb... I guess with a lot of lightweight replacements and additional excessive trimming you might be able to get down there... maybe).

its doable. You will have a hardcore stripped down ride though.
but you will be able to feel the less weight. Take out your ac if you can too and subframe. maybe get a lightweight battery too.
aftermarket exhaust compenents such as tbe, uppipe, headers(stock are very very heavy) will help with weight reduction on the front end too.

I'd think that removing (and relocating) front-end weight would be the most advantageous, since the balance of the car is so front-heavy. Those A/C systems are heavy.
2800lb is still more than the curb weight of my other car (which is 50/50), tho :D I've seen those stripped down to the 2100lb area...

...nah...he's a drag d00d.....lives his life 1/4 mile at a time.
...my '02 handled MUCH better with no 'U' brace....no GBOD....a light pulley.....a PC680 battery under the passengers seat....light exhaust...v7 STi TMIC(there really WAS a reason for me buying THAT ;) )....and all the rest of the junk I did on the front ;)
...the '06 should be even better when I gett all the rest swapped over

Sadly, the interior parts on the WRX/STi don't weigh much at all, other than the seats, so there are much better ways of saving weight. Your wheels are fine for weight (19.2 lbs each), but the RE070's are heavy at 27 lbs, think of replacing them with the RT615's when they're due. Take a look at the JDM front and rear bumper beams, take out the spare/jack/tools, get a lightweight battery, etc. You can save a little here and a little there without much fuss, even ditching the Rally spoiler will save some.

the jdm rear bumper beam is removing the one that is there ;)
.....as in there is NO jdm rear bumper beam.....their cars don't have one.
.....and a set of light wheels can save ya 5 pounds each on that(my SSR's are 13 each)

Stripping the interior wont save you as much as replacing some of the other things listed above. How "streetable" do you want the car? With evrything out, it might be fun for awhile but it will get old quick. The car will get hotter and colder on the inside with none of the interior stuff, and of course....louder.

yeah, there's sound deadening material sprayed on the inside of the rear cabin and the trunk. you need to pour dry ice onto i and chip it off, but it can save quite a few pounds.
and hell, if you aren't using it, why not? just store it all in your basement or something.
just don't be drastic. you don't want your ignition wires and fuse box open so you kick it every time you shift.
sound deadening foam, freeze it and chuck it.
seats and carpet, chuck it.
stereo and speakers, chuck.
rear door glass, replace with lexan(believe me glass is heavy and if you could, this would be worth it)
door panels, lose em.
seats, change out for racing seat(just one) and put in a harness bar with a 4 point harness.
headliner, chuck it
relocate battery to trunk
lose the A/C
switch every suspension component to lightweight aftermarket/tuning parts to reduce unsprung weight(control arms, struts, lat links, trailing arms, hollow antisway)
and of course, no spare.
that would be about the extent i'd take it to. others would go further but that's getting silly, expecially for street use.

Everything mentioned in this thread was covered in this thread ages ago. Read pretty much the entire thing and you'll find out everything you want to know and more.

I think he is asking how much weight he personally would lose....the answer is none.
| anthony_delprete84 | 01-24-2006 08:07 PM |
just take out the rear seats like all the civics do, that will drop AT LEAST 250lbs
| samoht_ackerman | 01-24-2006 09:08 PM |
dont know about newer subies, but when i took out my back seat it was maybe 5lbs(all foam) and the rest you might save maybe 50lbs depending on what you gut back really not worth it.
| Lexington | 01-25-2006 12:19 AM |
in all seriousness, your best bet for losing weight is by going on a diet and buying a GC
