how to clean off hot glue on bumper?

previous owner had a prodrive lip hot glued to the bumper..now i got the oem lip, the center center is exposed with the glue and its very tough to get off..is there any way to get it off other than sanding it and getting repainted? ive tried heating it up, but glue doesnt melt but its gets soft. i used a putty knife to scrape it off, it doesnt come off clean. anyone have any idea? ive also did searches on google/yahoo, nothing really comes up. i dont wanna repaint my bumper for it, if there are other solutions to get rid of this mess. thanks.

i use....... now bear with me......... easy off ....... yes the oven cleaner, throw that goo gone crap away it only really works on gum anyway i use this for all tape type residue, but you say its hot glue like from a gun??? what kind of idiot installed that, you may want to double check their work on any other mods just my .02

yea ive found some mickey mouse job in the car..but gotten it fixed.. yea hot glue from the gun. so will 'easy off' take off hot glue? i really dont kno any other liquid solution to take it off..i would try to burn it off..but that would leave marks on my bumper..:P

I had one of those miracle dent remover kits from smallmart and it came with isopropyl alcohol to remove the hot glue residue. It didn't work that well with the dents, but the glue came off with the alcohol.

i would try the easy off i just used it to get elec tape residue from the previous owners' check engine light fix and it is done the right way now...... but i'd try the easy off it does not hurt the clearcoat, it also works on getting the residue off from those pesky dealership stickers or any unwanted badges

haha, is that the same as rubbing alcohol?

electrical tape residue is sticky and other sticker sticky stuff, but hot glue stays hard. its not sticky at all, but its just a pain to take off. ive also tried using a razor blade, i just took off the top layer.

maybe try using that freeze off stuff they use to get gum off of things, i don't know, i've never tried it, just a suggestion though.

hot glue i think would be tuffer to get off there since it's basically the same material that you are trying to get it off of. possibly bring it by a body shop that you know is good and maybe have them try
sorry i could'nt be of more help

Try this. Heat with a heat gun. Press cheese cloth onto in, let it cool, then heat it up from one edge while pulling on the cheese cloth and scraping with a plastic scraper.

hmm sounds interesting, what is cheese cloth?
| danny8630 | 07-15-2005 04:27 PM |
laquer thinner/denatured alcohol
| crashtest sonny | 07-15-2005 04:32 PM |
would that take off paint?
| turbokonejo | 07-15-2005 04:43 PM |
no it will not. Try Reducer and thinner

Cheescloth is a very loose weave cloth used for car polishing.

^^ok ill give that a try.
| crashtest sonny | 07-17-2005 09:06 PM |
alright no luck with that idea..the hot glue isnt as sticky..it doesnt melt as fast either so it doesnt stick to the cloth.
what if i wet sand it? and buff it out with some wax?

You can try making it really cold, some hot glue gets brittle and comes off at low temperature.
Are you sure it's not epoxy?

so u think if i freeze it ...like with the computer cleaner spray, turn it upside down and freeze the glue? hmm..
its not epoxy. its rubberish and clear..i took most of it off already..but there are still some left.

How about one of those bug-off sponges? It's a sponge with a plastic mesh around it used for removing dried up bugs on your paint. You might end up scratching up the paint a little, but you could then buff it out.
| monzon | 07-18-2005 04:20 PM |
Yeah, that's exactly what I was thinking!!!! I just didn't have a name for that canned air stuff.
I was going to recommend spray contact cleaner, but it might dissolve paint, I've never tried it.
